you do realize you can buy workstation cases brand new.

aren't always cheap but have awesome quality and server grade features like hot-swap bays.

Supermicro is a good brand that sells workstation/server equipment and chassis's.

Chenbro is also worth mentioning and have a good lineup of workstation cases, see >>57198207
>>
>>57198207
That's not a workstation.
>>

sure, but those usually don't support SGPIO or have fan failure/overheat detection like something on a supermicro workstation.

although yeah for most people that's probably enough.

Everything about them is convenient and having drive/fan/overheat failure detection is nice having alongside SGPIO led signals.

The PSU problem was with Z420 (we have Z620 ad well). We needed to put in a new GPU but the power supply didn't have enough juice (600w). We thought we could just get a new PSU but nope...

But the Z620 has the same proprietary problems (psu is 800w though I believe).

These guys spent $3500+ per machine just for the quadro cards even though we don't even fucking need anything close to that.

>>
>>57198931
I think the Z420 supports the same 225W power draw for the PCI-E slots as the Z620. I think the Z820 supports more. To be fair, there's almost no pro graphics cards that require more than 2 6 pin PCI-E. The only one I can think of is the W9100. You could have a couple fairly high end graphics cards in one, but I don't think that's a popular configuration due to the limited amount of expansion slots in the first place.

What are you doing with those machines?

Live TV production but the software is based on a really old OpenGL. The shit they make on it does not warrant powerful quadro cards.

They wanted to turn one of the machines into a VR testing machine. So they bought a 1080 without even checking with me.

Also I currently have Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and a Microsoft Hololens sitting in my office collecting dust. I shit you not. They bought the vive and Oculus on release and we haven't even set them up.

P.s. hololens is gimmicky garbage. My arms hurt after a while just moving windows and shit around and it would crash (auto reboot) every 15 mins.
>>
>>57198998
These machines are bought by production companies and used for video, CG, and photographic work. But they have powerful CPUs and GPUs in them that will play video games just fine. And they surely get used for that in down time or off the clock. And HP knows that and even talks about it sometimes in marketing presentations.

On the second hand market these machines are very popular for turning into budget gaming PC's. You take that z620 and drop a GTX 1070 in it and you've got a very powerful "rig", as they call it.

Companies like CNN, weather channel etc contract us to make stuff for them. Think news tickers, those giant ass interactive graphics, etc.

We also take random odd jobs from medical companies (think detailed and accurate medical animations for sugery) and defense contractors for special software (what I primarily work on).
>>
>>57198616
>Impossible to upgrade a lot of the components.

You can upgrade it to the more powerful proprietary PSU provided by hp :^)

But anyway, no need. It's got a 800w PSU with 18 amps provided to the PCI-E connector. That's plenty.

Other things like CPU, RAM, HDD/SDD upgrade like normal.
>>
>>57199100

>>
>>57199094
That's interesting. What special software are you producing for defense contractors? Ballistics stuff?
>>

>I don't think they would make cost effective gaming machines, though

Look at this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Z620-BAREBONES-WITH-E5-1650-CPU-HEATSINK-MOTHERBOARD-POWER-SUPPLY-TESTED-/112159577045?hash=item1a1d3b53d5:g:cSwAAOSw6n5XvIur

RAM will be $50. SSD $50. GPU $200 (or less). $700 total will build a very higher performing platform. I'd challenge anybody to build a "gaming PC" for that money and build it with parts of the same quality.

I wish (though I worked on that before I left my previous company). It's software for planning and responding to scenarios. It's being used by a very important and big government agency and two big defense contractors.

I wrote it almost entirely myself in javascript (it's a webapp). I've never been so proud and ashamed of my code base... it's literally the first real project I got to lead.

The requirements changed like every other week and I'd have to shoehorn in shit in random places cause they wanted a prototype of a feature in less than a week.

So we have this basterized child that I'm not allowed to rewrite and I deploy a new version every week in the form of a virtual machine.

I am currently trying to learn how to automate making the vm (and looking at docker).

I don't even get paid enough for this ;(

Ha, I wish I could make it a SaaS. It would make deployment a lot easier.

The data they put in the software is top secret (or higher) so it needs to be behind some serious firewalls or close circuit (I don't know the details). Basically, it can't use the internet.

Also, they are never allowed to send me back logs or remote anything so debugging is a fucking Bitch. The only way to properly debug is them making a dummy scenario (no copy paste, mist recreate entirely from scratch on a nonclasified computer) with the same problem as the real one then them sending it to me.

I think we eventually would make a SaaS for normal agencies and companies since it can apply to a lot of industries. But that's very far into the future.

Slowly trying to make the product more modular though :)

All major browsers today run like shit on old CPU's, youtube barely runs.

You heard of the current Windows 10 background bloat that you can't turn off and have to manually stop process every time you reboot. Apparently it's fine on midrange current cpu's but older cpu's struggle and can't run properly because of how bloated W10 background operations have gotten

Shit code is shit code regardless the cpu you use, and it specially apply to games.

>All major browsers today run like shit on old CPU's, youtube barely runs.
My Q9550 run 1080p perfectly at 25% use on all cores with a gtx 260, and that's a 8 year old gpu, bet with a newer low end card the cpu usage would be lower. Hell with it, the potato in my office that's a sempron 140 with a 6150SE (yep, that nforce430) can play up to 360p without stuttering, and that thing is way less strong than late c2d or c2q.

>You heard of the current Windows 10 background bloat that you can't turn off and have to manually stop process every time you reboot. Apparently it's fine on midrange current cpu's but older cpu's struggle and can't run properly because of how bloated W10 background operations have gotten

This was really smart. They called it "Onyx" because "onyx" means black, and the box is black. Like, they had a black box that they needed to name, and instead of just calling it "Black" or "Blackie" they called it "Onyx". Or they came up with the name "Onyx" which they thought was cool because it has a couple of infrequently used letters in it, and sounds cool, and then they realized, "Hey, Jeff, did you know that this word apparently means 'black'? Hows about we make the case black, then?" Either way, really a genius idea. And Vanessa in marketing who came up with the idea for a purple stripe on the side (*not* in the middle) really never got any credit for her input since she went on maternity leave right before the product launched.

No, at the moment its collecting dust, i bought it out of interest for old systems. Also i want to get two c8900s for it.
These systems are too old to be used for something productive today. Raspis and less older xeons are much more suited if you want to serve webservices/work on it. Won't hold you back on throwing anything at it for the sake of curiosity but mind the speed and powerbill.
Would be interesting to try out HP-UX on it for a change. Might try minecraft on it for the absurdity.

>couple of hundreds
Those are sold for 50 yuropoors with free shipment here. The zx6000 was a couple of hundreds, shame i missed it.
>>
>>57209195
well, someone could justify spending $50,000 on them for CAD work and the last of them smoked contemporary opterons at double the clock frequency so I think that's good enough for whatever pleb jobs I'd throw at it, no stranger to mothballed shit and not very impatient, plus power is cheap so even running one 24/7 would probably amount to practically fuck all unless I'm hitting max load on it

>Those are sold for 50 yuropoors with free shipment here. The zx6000 was a couple of hundreds, shame i missed it.

>>
>>57213648
>Multimedia included games.
But it is not limited to them, "multimedia" is a very broad subject, hence the name "multimedia".

You seem to be nitpicking for the sake of it, systems like these were commonly used in game development, but that doesn't really mean they're made to play them any more than an EditDroid was made to watch Star Wars, the "multimedia" part of the Indy is more in relation to its video/audio production-oriented feature set, it was not built as a games machine, nobody bought it as one, and in general they were very 2D-oriented systems anyway, their only 3D graphics option was the rather anemic XZ board set that couldn't even outrun the CPU on later models.

They're for creating the content, not consuming it, they weren't made to sell to consumers or gamers, they didn't sell to consumers or gamers, they weren't even really made with games production in mind, the Indy was released and ready to go, aimed at publishing and other 2D work, months before SGI even chose Nintendo to market Project Reality.

Kind of interested in picking one up for audio recording/editing, some OpenGL games and """development""" (fucking around)

Yes

Don't fucking bother, the noise on the audio inputs/outputs are atrocious, at least on the AV1 card. Absolutely fucking disappointing.

This is fun. Install nekoware and enlarge your anus to fit some IRIX-isms. The thing supports OpenGL 1.0 as well as IRISGL if you want to try that out. And unlike other low-end SGIs, you can use textures on the O2 without performance going to shit. Also, if you have an AV1/2 card, you will have access to some dank GL extensions for video. Cool shit.

Have fun and post pics.

Oh well, I was hoping it would be an improvement over my Visual Workstation that's pretty ass too (and the A/V I/O was one of its major selling points for fuck sake)

>And unlike other low-end SGIs, you can use textures on the O2 without performance going to shit.
Yeah, that was one of my biggest things other than being able to mess with MIPSpro (to see what nekochan thinks a "real" compiler is all about), fuck paying out the ass for TRAM modules.

Just got this bad boy mint from the technically defunct manufacturer. This, the Addtronics ET7890A, is the close relative of the ET7896A, which saw a long OEM run with Supermicro, who branded it as the SC750. Features of the less economical, original case are a removable motherboard tray and drive rails, in 19 goddamn 98, might I add. It was featured in the premiere issue (September 1998) of MaximumPC, as part of "DREAM MACHINE '98".
It's beautiful, folks, lemme tell you.

SSDs have limited write capacity. With RAID the drives have speeds that rival SSDs. For RAM I have 16 4GB sticks.

>>57224847
4GB DIMMs are literally worthless. It will take years for you wear out an SSD. There's no excuse for running power hungry and still slow enterprise drives. If you're really that worried about endurance, buy enterprise SSDs.

There are safe ways to handle secrets so they're not in your log logs like environment variables;
or entire projects like 'Vault' to handle secrets. Chef / Puppet / Ansible also handle secrets but that could be too much (sounds like you could benefit from that too though if setting up another environment is that much of a bitch)

The thing weigh like 14kg though. It might be cheaper to find one in your home country depending on where you are. I can't send through HDDs because they are ex education machines and i said i would not pass one the HDDs in any capacity when i took them.

I know you can separate it, but they see still not allowed to send me anything back (this counts for any data generated from classified computers regardless of the contents).

I've been looking at configuration management tools, but they wouldn't be helpful at this stage. The way they work is weird since different secret projects data cannot be stored in the same database. So, anytime they wanna make a new project/scenario... they just copy a new VM. Basically, they run the entire app locally or on a laptop and everyone relevant to the task connects to it. No data leakage etc. I also don't know the security standards to store this kind of important data next to each other.

I can take their setup into account, but they can't share the details with me. Having everything self contained makes it easier (our app depends on a few offline tools like a map tile server that runs on OpenStreetMap data).

The thing I wanna focus on the most is continous deployment. If I can get our entire product to build into a docker image, it would save so much time. Currently, I manually make the virtual machines in VirtualBox and Debian. I wrote some scripts to take care of most of the work but I'd have hands off and great time savings with a continous setup.
>>
