What went wrong was that Microsoft rested way too much on its laurels (laziness and complacency from its monopoly) while Apple and Google changed the game completely.

By the time Microsoft realized it had fucked up, it was way too late. The past six years of Windows can be summed up as Microsoft scrambling (and failing) to catch up with everything that has changed since the pre-iPhone days of Vista and Windows Mobile and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

What was ever right?

My family were all Windows as far as I can remember. Win95, 98, 2000 XP etc. But from what I can tell reading about PC history, Mac's were ahead of the curve in most ways during early Windows.

I'm 25, of course I did use those OS's I mentioned. However, I did not use the early macOS releases and from what I can tell having sucked up bits of PC and Mac history Apple were technically ahead of the game in terms of graphics etc. back but Microsoft still won the war.

For the first ten years of its history, Windows was more or less a joke.

Windows 95 was when Microsoft finally caught up to (and even surpassed) the Mac, at the lowest point in Apple's history.

Ten years after that, Mac OS X had matured into a first-rate software platform while Microsoft desperately tried to catch up again with Longhorn, which was eventually scrapped so that they could ship Vista.

Bill Gates's mother personally knew IBM's chairman in 1980 via the United Way board of directors. That's how Microsoft got the deal for the IBM PC.
>>
>>57191962
His name is Gary Kildall

>Created an OS called CP/M
>Was basically the DOS/Windows of it's day
>Known to hate litigation and general legal fuckery
>Original IBM PC was planned to use CPM
>Ended up contracting Microsoft for a literal knockoff (which they bought from elsewhere and modified for the PC) after they wouldn't agree to really shitty deal
>Due to Kildall's dislike of legal fuckery let Microsoft knock off their #1 product and steal their market by riding on the coattails of IBM
>Eventually created a competitor to Windows when it was a DE on top of DOS, called GEM
>Microsoft, not liking competition, made it so that GEM would crash on a regular basis
>All kinds of fuckery with other products from Kildall's company

>>
>>57191546

Microsoft has been into this kind of desktop-Web convergence since IE had to actually compete with Netscape back in the 90s. Vista Gadgets and later Metro Apps are the realized end result of what they wanted to do with Active Desktop and IE4 aka remove the browser entirely in favor of channels/portals to the Web.

>CP/M dominant reality
CP/M was an attempt to shoehorn an OS in to a tiny limited-resource chip like the 8080 (it literally stands for Control Program for Microcomputers).

While the stuff it stripped out was necessary for performance reasons, the result was its derivatives DOS and Windows lacked a proper user and file permissions system (until way too late), and didn't have proper address-space randomization which is why Windows 95/8 were so goddamned easy to exploit. Not to mention random shit like fucking drive lettering and separating the file name from the extension. There is no reason CP/M should ever have been adapted to anything more complicated than a 16-bit microcomputer.

>tfw 18 and didn't experience Windows glorious past.

I started using Windows from version 8.1 and thought it was pretty cool and I quite like Windows 10, but I totally see myself in 15 years bitching about how things were "better in my time" like an old bitter dinosaur while Microsoft tailors their OS to the ever changing tastes of newer generations.

But we do have a CP/M dominant reality; Windows is still beholden to DOS design decisions, and DOS was beholden to CP/M design decisions.
>>
It still baffles me to remember they stripped the start button. Is it because there's mobile phone addicted non-tech marketing women in charge of product design? I'd like to think tech generally is going towards shit because of that.
