hi guys,
so I've got this kindy crappy laptop and I wanted to use GNU/Linux because windows10 obviously is an unusable pile of crap. I've wanted to have a minimal distro but I didn't want to compile everything myself (manily because my CPU sucks) yet I wanted to have access to bleeding edge software. Thus, I've decided to try Arch. The installation went smoothly and so did setting everything up (and this is coming from a lifelong wintoddler). I've installed Cinnamon because I don't know shit about the different DEs. everythingjustwerkz.jpg
Thanks guys for advocating Arch, I've been using it for a week now and it's really comfy and customizable. My questions:
1. Which DE / WM (what's the difference even?) should someone who mainly programs and uses the internet use with shitty hardware? A friend of mine suggested i3 but I'm unsure.
2. Why can't I press PrtSc and then use Ctrl-V in GIMP? It always says "there is no image data in the clipboard to paste". And yes, I know about Create>Screenshot but that's more mouse clicks.
3. I've installed pacaur to handle AUR packages (I think that's what it does at least). When I type "sudo pacaur -Syu" does it hence also update all AUR packages? Since AUR implies compiling it yourself, does it use incremental compiling? Asking because my laptop took three hours to compile Pale Moon.
4. I've installed clang via pacman and, even though LLVM 3.9.0 is out for almost two months now, it still is 3.8.1. How can I get 3.9.0 or, even better, a 4.0.0 snapshot, that automatically updates itself wth pacman?

This may fit better in /sqt/ or /fglt/ but it's such a wall of text that I've decided to make an own thread.

i3
pretty sure you need to configure the printscreen key, try ctrl+prtsc
>>
sorry for the myriad of typos in the OP

>>57188669
neither ctrl+prtsc nor alt+prtsc are working
>>
>>57189035
Google it

On shitty hardware, use mate, xfce, or lx*, or just a wm like openbox. For programming, tiling is nice once you get used to it, so consider i3
PrtSc is either not set to anything, but more likely it is taking a screenshot and writing it to a file instead of xsel
AUR doesn't use incremental compiling. Also, it doesn't allow running as root, it'll ask for your password when it needs it

posted form an arch crapbook

what exactly is your point in case you have any?
>>
Well first, it's called "Linux"

Next, arch is shit. Use a real distro with one package manager instead of one package manager and a million retarded helper scripts. Debian Linux and Gentoo Linux are recommended.
>>
>>57192014
Linux is the kernel. Neither do you refer to the entirety of Windows OS' as NT...

Gentoo is hard to install and set up correcly from what I've heard. But Debian definitely seemed interesting and I will give it a try.

This..
I love openbox.. You can configure your menu to have everything you need regularly and it's quite light weight. Xfce is a good alternative if you like a more windows like experience.
> i3
i3 is nice once you get used to it and is pretty easy to use for a beginner
>>
>>57192330
If you're going to bother with Debian you might as well use Ubuntu. Yeah it's not as neckbear but it works and millions of people use it.

You refer to Windows as Windows because the company who made both the kernel and the things on top of it decided to call it Windows. Same with OS X (macOS) and Darwin. People call Linux based operating systems that don't have proper branding (for instance, Android) Linux, because it's the most prominent and noteworthy part of the collective.

The operating system in OP's screencap is Arch. It's a distribution of software from several different and independent projects. The kernel it uses is Linux. The compiler he's using is Clang. The desktop environment is Cinnamon. There's also X, KDE, Qt, zsh, OpenSSH, OpenSSL, a myriad of drivers, whatever bootloader and EFI tools are involved, icon sets, themes, fonts and various libraries from THOUSANDS of independent projects, all of which are completely separate from GNU or Stallman. You could even replace the Arch supplied ports of (originally Unix) utilities with way better alternatives or other clones like Busybox, which once again has fuck all to do with GNU. Even describing some minor GNU utilities written in '96 by completely different people under the same vague banner as being equal to the kernel (which is a major project written primarily by people from Intel, Google and other large companies) would be laughable. Naming GNU as a necessary historical component instead of Unix, on the other hand, would also be insulting.

Thanks guys, I'll have a look into these.

A friend of mine uses Ubuntu MATE but I don't like it. It comes with lots of preinstalled packages, even proprietary ones. I prefer minimalism and having bleeding edge releases.

Any. They differ in window managers, file managers, control panels, session managers etc
>2. Why can't I press PrtSc and then use Ctrl-V in GIMP? It always says "there is no image data in the clipboard to paste". And yes, I know about Create>Screenshot but that's more mouse clicks.
Because your screenshooter didn't copy that image

Yes, it uses incremental compiling

From the AUR
