It doesn't look bad if you theme it, but performance and stability are a bit fucky for everyday use.
>>

Maybe it doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look good either

KDE is the best DE, no doubt there
>>
>>57187823
I have used kde for many years on computers with 2-4 gb of memory.
If I were to swap out active applications, everything would feel very sluggish.
500mb seems about right for a default setup, it can be a lot less if you tweak things.

What distro is that? Looks nice desu.
Is it default or you pimped it?
>>
There's no good DE at the moment. KDE crashes constantly, Xfce and LXDE act and feel like something from 1998, GNOME has gone full retard and removed all options for configuration, and Unity, while novel, isn't exactly a joy to use.

Oh the pain.

plasma works best with open source drivers and amd hardware. That's what the devs use to develop and test it. I have seven years old amd shit and it has worked flawless since the kde 4 days for me.
>>

guy with no problems above:
I use integrated intel graphics and a 970m with bumblebee. Intel's drivers are usually pretty gud on Linux
>>
>>57188152
Sure, but when I look around it is mostly nvidia and intel users whining about unstable and buggy plasma. Usually carried by plasma devs explaining that their drivers are shit.
>>
>>57187464

KDE looks great, anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

KDE's problem is you don't get to see it look nice because of the fucking consistant crashing.
>>
What happen with Gnome 3? It is abandonware now?
>>
>>57188117
AMD CPU, AMD GPU, open source drivers. Maybe I'll have to give it another go. Cheers for the info!
>>
>>57187464
I've managed to get rid of all crashes. I used to have at least 2 crashes daily before I did this. Go to Settings - Display and monitor - Compositor and turn off the following experimental options: enable color correction, allow applications to block composting. One of those is enabled by default for some reason on KDE 5.8 and it causes Plasma to crash.

so the only way to get rid of it is a third-party hack
and this is why KDE is shit.

the sad thing is that they had this great environment with a great community and a great software and applet ecosystem, and then they said, NOPE. NOT GOOD ENOUGH, WE NEED TO MOVE INTO THE FUTURE AND REWRITE FUCKING EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH.

>>
>>57192208
>>57192221
Here's the real reason they don't let you remove the cashew/hamburger: normalfags.

A normalfag might accidentally remove the cashew and all the panels then be confused. A way to combat it could be to never allow the user to remove the final panel. The way we currently deal with it is posted above.

Go back to your memestethic terminal clients, please.
>>

sonata is a way nicer and less absolutely fucking retarted client than cantata (and has the same icon)
>>
>>57192645
It's a modified aeri color scheme with breeze. I also modified the breeze gtk theme to fit. The gtk2 one is incomplete because of images for popups but mostly finished. Everything else is standard theme.
I also disabled the gradient in the title bar and changed the look of the buttons in the settings for the breeze deco.
I'm not sure how long that link works, I tried mega at first but it says that the upload will only hold for the session.

You should try rating your favorite songs a little and use dynamic playlists. It was strangely addicting for me and allows me to easily listen to songs I don't hear often or just listening to my favorites. Of course it will only really be useful if the library is large.

from what i can tell, e is all about neat, comfy, unconventional themes. i only fucked around with dr16 though, back in the day when it was still a "new" thing, and then for the past two days when i found out the 0.16 branch was still being (somewhat) maintained. e17 took 12 years to make and they turned it into this full DE type thing with a whole set of foundation libraries and now the whole thing is moving to Wayland which I'm not quite ready for. maybe when Patrick decides to add official support for it. i'm not even using dr16 as a primary WM, only for shitposting. i don't have the time or patience to adjust all the menus and settings and keybinding and other shit to make it 100% comfy, I'm too used to fluxbox to relearn e.

Fuck off.

KDE has the best defaults out of any desktop environment.
Lightweight DEs don't look good by default because performance is ideal (WMs, MATE, XFCE, LXDE)
GNOME looks shit without dash to dock or themeing (Numix/Arc)
Cinnamon is okay by default, but Breeze is definitely better unless you theme it.
Breeze is amazing out of the box, not to mention OP's screenshot is basically default settings.

Linux devs always imitate designs from Windows and OSX to lure in new users. That is pathetic, they should develop their own unique design and identity in the desktop scene.

Given workspaces and window overview in GNOME are actually central to its design, they're doing a pretty bad job at impersonating OSX. If they really wanted to get the ball rolling, they'd do all sorts of stupid shit like make maximize move your window to another workspace and full-screen it.

Autism is the main reason Linux is a mess. The UI is a cluster fuck and many key features related to device drivers don't work as intended. Simplicity =/= minimalism, so making it user friendly should be the focus.

I'm using KDE Neon, which is 5.8.2 KDE on top of Ubuntu LTS.

It's stable. It's fucking *pretty* It's about the same speed as any other desktop. I say this while typing on a machine that came with Vista.

You know what slows this machine down? Chromium. It eats RAM.

Not when it forces the machine to use the swap partition it doesn't.
