I think it depends on your gaming habits.
If you're playing games like Battlefield, CoD etc. then definitly Windows.
If not, Linux should be fine honestly.
I kind of forced my whole family to use linux as I said I won't support their windows shit if its not windows 7. They all had the Win10 upgrade done, so I installed Linux because they needed my free support kek

They all have Fedora installed, and nobody ever complained about it. In fact, most of them say its running faster than before and beside the design its just working for them.

The average customer doesn't have high demands at his PC. The average customer wants to read mails, surf the internet, and maybe open Word or Excel. The average customer wants to run the programs his friends have, shitty tools from 3rd world country that wouldn't know Linux if it kicked them in the ass, stuff like "super smile photo enhancer plus plus" or whatever.

For that reason, Linux is not for the average user.

I on the other hand develop programs. I have to improvise scripts to handle large batches of varying data on the fly. For that reason, I love the plethora of development tools that come free with Linux and the ease of use. Plus of course the reliability.
I admit I still have Windows installed on a partition to run games. But just for games, nothing more.

If someone actually makes a decent casual distro that's better than *buntu, maybe. I don't see what tangible benefits Linux would offer though over macOS/Windows for someone who doesn't know how to use the command line and has no need for dev tools, even if absolutely everybody supported it. The kernel being slightly better and the architecture of your OS being slightly less shit isn't something that affects the average end user who just clicks "next" on every prompt and expects his computer to do everything for him.

As it stands right now, it's absolute garbage compared to mac or win because of the lack of support.

I didn't mean it to. What I decidedly not did is say "Linux is so much better and more reliable than Windows." It is. But if you need to run games or the photo program that puts edges straight, that's of no use to you. The reason Linux and Windows coexist and will continue to do so is that they were designed to do different things.

Most developers I know use Linux (unless the customer wants a Windows application). Most users I know use Windows. And then there's my brother who is an Apple fag, but hey, he's got money to spent, so why not.

If you wanna browse the internet, use Word and play games, windows is the best OS for Normies.

If you have middle-aged to elderly parents that only browse the web and write word documents, but always manage to fuck stuff up, installing them Ubuntu LTS or Kubuntu LTS with their favorite browser with ublock and WPS office might be the way to go. They can hardly fuck that stuff up and compared to windows it won't catch many viruses and stays fresh and fast without needing a reinstall every year. Just tell them to update using the updater when they are prompted and they are good to go.

I have used linux on and off for the past 10 years.
For a while I used linux for home use, (games, movies etc) and windows for school.
There is a lot of things you can study at a lot of different levels.
Some studies only require a compiler and an editor, others a spreadsheet, and some require a specific application that cannot be replaced.
Schools often receive a discount on software, so students get proprietary software without paying the license cost.
In these situations, use whatever OS your teacher recommends or prepare yourself to spend a lot more time than your classmates have to do on homework.
This will take time away, so you either get less sleep, homework done or less of a social life.

If your friends play a very specific game with your friends that you feel is crucial to your social life that does not work on linux, keep windows around for that, but be aware of this as popularity often shifts and then a new game will be popular.

If none of these issues concern the person, then I think it is a shame when people do not use linux.

I think a lot of work can be done to make it easier for the dying breed that doesn't speak english. The manuals are in english, the application names are in english and most guides / irc channels / forums which discuss anything related to linux is (mostly) in english.

This is not a problem for anyone under 30 in any civilized country, and the problem is fading.
