Is there any point in getting a BlackBerry Passport at this time?
Is BB10 completely dead?
Should I just wait for the new android devices they'll be releasing?

Fuck off, moron. BB10OS has at least one more update coming and there may even be more BB10OS phones coming out. Even as it stands currently it's the best mobile OS and will likely remain so for years to come. With that fact plus the fact that BlackBerries are basically the only modern keyboard phones on the market, the Q10, Classic, and Passport are undeniably the three best phones one could possibly buy.

but battery is much better in passport, no?
is android app support the same for all of them?
>>
>>57176761
I don't know what the Passport gets for battery life but I get 2-3 days with my Q10 and they all run the same BB10OS versions so Android support is the same.
>>
Its very simple people. If you need a communications device with a little more security than Android or iOS you get a Blackberry (non Android). If you want a toy you get an Android or iOS device. No one has a Blackberry for it's apps. I have a Classic and it's used for business not for Candy Crush Saga or dick pics, that's what my iPad is for.

bb4lyfe my friend. the classic is my daily driver, and i have an unopened q10 as my backup if anything happens to that phone. bb10 os is the most fluid, featureful, and stable mobile platform i've ever seen. puts ios and android to total shame. typing is such a breeze on these things, and it would take at-least a dozen third party apps under android or ios to reach feature parity with bb10.
>>
w2c cheap blackberry classic in UK???
>>
>>57177032
just order them unlocked on amazon. if you want new, the classics are going for between 250 and 300 us dollars. the q10 is going for between 125 and 175 us dollars.

if you want used, you'll save a shit ton more cash. the passports are also going for cheap as well, new or used.

RIM happily gave (gives?) access to BBM data to middle eastern shitholes. Fuck them.

I now trust Apple more re. security actually. There are only two ways to compromise a modern iThing (assuming the 8-hour deadline for Touch ID has passed):

* Prepare an Apple-signed update to the SEP's firmware that disables passcode attempt rate limiting. Needs you to be in a position to coerce Apple, and they have publicly refused to do something similar for the San Bernardino attacker's phone (which didn't have a SEP).

* Decap the CPU and try to physically extract the SEP's key. This would be incredibly difficult and failure would permanently destroy the key.

You can avoid both of those by turning on Complex Passcode and choosing something better than a 6-digit PIN, something that can't be bruteforced. You'll rarely have to actually enter it since you would mostly be using Touch ID.
>>
>>57177360
This scenario is my wet dream, but it will never happen because of patents. The kernel (QNX) also has commercial value outside of BB10.
>>
>>57180860
QNX isn't BB10OS's kernel, it's the base OS, like Darwin is to OS X.

My 4 year old iPhone 5s is finally dead, I can get a Q5 for $75, should I fall for the BB meme?

The only app I NEED that isn't standard on blackberry is snapchat, can you sideload it in a way that won't get my account banned?
>>
>>57181566
I've heard that using Snapchat on BB10OS can get you banned but I'm not 100% positive.
>>
>>57181562
it actually does automatic updates
>>
>>57181592
Can you sideload the official snapchat and log in etc successfully?
If you're using a third party snapchat client you're getting banned in less than a month no question
>>
>>57181621
Yet I'm running BB10OS 10.3.2.556, which came out over a year ago. A software update was definitely not what caused this.

>>57181626
You can use official Snapchat just fine, I heard the issue is that it reports as BB10OS and if the Android app is on something that's not Android it can get you banned. Like I said though, no clue how true it is.

my advice is to get a blackberry q10 and try it out. once you get used to the OS there's no going back to android/ios.
just got my passport SE today. it exudes quality. the touch sensitive keyboard makes up for the fact that it's three-row instead of four-row. still not sure if it's better than my q10, but it sure is different. coworkers just got their iphones 7 and sure were jealous :^)

you should be able to use an "autoloader" for an older os version before anti-theft was introduced (10.3.0 I think?, check crackberry forums) to bypass the anti-theft. Search google, it's not very complicated. It's not like apple's icloud lock.

The only deal breaker for me with the BB10 OS is that you cannot set the MCC and MNC, which is required to be set manually to even connect to my carrier provider.

Also Q5 is very easy to repair, compared to Q10 where you have to completely take it apart and the requirement of using T2 torx screwdriver if you want to replace any component

>>
>>57185351
Did you try a security wipe and then autoloader a recent OS? Not sure how anti-theft works as I've been lucky with my Q10.
I flashed the latest 10.3.0 before they released the 10.3.1 and it worked pretty well. 10.3.1.997 might be a dev build missing a lot of stuff, maybe try the latest 10.3.0 if you can't get anti-theft reset.

yeah it's a dev build and I already tried security wipe, didn't help.

>>
>>57185841
Never got that before, weird. At this point probably start searching Crackberry or something. Sometimes dev versions block downgrading (happens now with 10.3.3 dev versions), but apart from that have no idea

For some reason every release of RetroArch for BB10 has problems with keybindings. This .bar has the correct settings for the Passport's keyboard: https://github.com/lynnard/RetroArch/releases/tag/bb10-10210
For good GBA video like in the picture you'll need to change video scaling to 3:2 and shader option to "nearest" in the options.

They may be dying but their phones are still the best.
>>
I wouldn't. Development for it is next to dead. Yes you can sideload apks using an old, limited version of the android sdk but its not worth it. Buy one of their android phones if anything. My work used to be such a large BB partner but over the years we've entirely ditched them, all the strange bugs with BB10 were the last straw. IMO the solution to a device not syncing over data should never be reformatting it.
>>
I used one for over a year. Best phone I've had for generic browsing. Still bring it on flights for reading ebooks/pdfs. And the battery just doesn't fucking die. Solid as a brick.

Have a priv now as my daily, though.

here ya go:

for that price though, they're all used or refurbished. your next best bet is a q10, which definitely meets your price point even when unopened and new.

I'm also really interested about this.
I used to have a Bold in the past and I loved it. I've been using a Samsung S4 for 3 years but honestly I think that BB OS was a much better system and BB's physical keyboard was excellent.
I can get a BB Classic for 340€, do you think that it's worthy?

You can still get those BB devices, but the new ones run an OS called BlackBerry 10, which is based on QNX (another Unix-like OS, but real-time, and specifically engineered for embedded and mobile devices). It is comparable to iOS and Android (and sports a compatibility layer for the latter).

An hour of listening to music with Bluetooth headphones while emulating GBA took 7%. If you tune your Android apps right (no background Android apps while you're not actively running one) battery lasts days.

after support for BB10 is completely dropped by all official parties, how much support from a user/modder community is there?

q10 for £160
classic for £250
passport for £290

>>57193533
That's quite a bit, I've been looking at Passports for ~$210
>>
>>57194767
I mean, noone's entirely sure they're going to totally drop support for BB10 while they're still a functioning corporation. It's just that we're not likely to see many new features or updates to the android run-time (for the time being at-least). There is an update in the works, but it's probably going to be security and enterprise-centric. Currently, and for another year or two (maybe more) most android apps run fine, there are a bunch of really good apps in the blackberry appworld store for free and pay that cover a lot of productivity and Web needs, and the OS itself is feature-packed and smooth as butter.

I went to the Priv after holding out for years on my Z10. The Blackberry implementation of Android is very good, and it's something I wish more manufacturers would do: just give us stock Android, with a few unique features we can turn off should we not want them (eg, the battery meter and that side bar thing). The "secure Android" thing is a bit of a meme, and when Blackberry eventually drops support the phone will basically become worthless, but otherwise it's very competent, very responsive, well-made and probably one of the few modern smartphones to have a truly interesting and unique design.

So what is it about bbos10 that makes it so good for productivity?

No bullshit, no lag, straightforward and fluent UI, it's the bee's knees
>>
>>57197309
hub
>>
>>57197309
It's not messy. The entire OS is designed to do phone and communication things- emails, texts, phone calls.

Too bad it's essentially dead. I just got switched to android. Their phones were also top-tier quality. Now they're outsourcing and working off android.

You can get the virtual keyoard and the hub on android too, not as good though.
>>
>>57198697
And the hub's just an app on Android, it's integrated with the OS in BB10OS
>>
>>57198710
Yes. The biggest thing is that in android you get functionality by fucking around with third party apps and work-arounds to an OS that's pretty shitty to use as a phone. BB10 everything is just there.

It took me about a year to get used to the fact that you just don't need any apps to do shit on a blackberry. They just fucking work.

if you need netflix, snapchat, or some other botnet app you won't like bb10. If you want a phone that's the epitome of personal communication and getting shit done get bb10.

The only downside is starting a call can be fucking laggy as shit(2-3 second annoying delay sometimes) on bb10 because there's a bug in the code BB hasn't fixed in the last update.
>>
>>57198710
Also as a workaround I got something called home launcher off F-droid. It turns the home button into a swipe-up mini appdrawer you can use in any app. Gives you proto-hub peek.
>>
>>57198760
but you need root for that right?
>>
>>57198747
Snapchat can be pretty useful. I was a virgin until the age of 24, used Blackberry devices all my life. Then I bought a Nexus 6P, got Snapchat, sent insipid shit to girls I knew and was laid within 4 months.

It might lag like a piece of shit on Android and is big time botnet, but Snapchat is good in my books. It was almost worth abandoning BBOS 10 for it.
>>
>>57198842
Nope. my phone's stock and it works.
>>
>>57198848
No idea then senpai. I never saw the need for snapchat myself but I never had a problem being virgin. Glad to hear it helped.
>>
>>57198842
A lot of F-droid is actually very stock friendly. I generally go to it before I look for anything on play store.
>>
>>57199026
me too, but certain apps need root and I figured if it changes how your swipe gesture works and changes the google search for that maybe it needs root.
>>
So which cross-platform instant messaging app should be used on BB10 if WhatsApp and Facebook won't work?

I miss the glorious tool belt of my old BB Bold. Having to swipe the finger on the screen in order to answer to a call is just retarded.
Plus the physical keyboard is way much better than any touchscreen keyboard around.
>>
>>57201392

which of the current blackberry phones is the most future-proof and would last me the longest
also in terms of construction etc

>>
I can get an unlocked Passport for 241€, new. What's the difference betwene locked and unlocked btw?
>>
>>57202163
Locked means you can only use it on carriers it's locked to. For example my Q10's locked to AT&T so I can only use it on AT&T's network along with NVMOs that use AT&T such as Net10 but can't use it on a carrier like T-Mobile. They also normally have branding for whatever carrier they're locked to. An unlocked phone works on any carrier its hardware supports. You can unlock a locked phone, but it's like ~$30 for the unlock code.
>>
>>57202190
Ok I see. Then unlocked shoulder be better.
