New hardware: GTX 1050 and 1050Ti to will be released on the the 25th.
Rumor: Intel's Kaby Lake Pentiums (priced below i3s) will be two core with hyperthreading (2 c / 4 t) and could arrive before the end of the year.

mATX is smaller.
That's literally it. You get fewer expansion slots.
You don't honestly even need full atx for multi-gpu setups. This is on the extreme end and the case isnt suited to it, but this is two dual-gpu cards.

Mini-ITX is different because now you're having to cram all the VRMs and everything else onto an incredibly small board. With mATX this isn't an issue because you've still got plenty of room, but mITX is way way way smaller than that.

Which is really only a serious concern if you're using a power hungry chip or planning on overclocking.

Is 400 dollars enough to get a lower end, but still servicable gaming computer? I'd like to start small, but gradually upgrade to more higher end parts. Came across this website:

https://elitegamingcomputers.com/good-cheap-gaming-computers/

And the 300 dollar option sounded good to me, (Newer games can still be played on Low-Med settings, can be upgraded, costs around 330 dollars)

But I'd like other opinions.

mATX has to do with the mounting holes on the board itself as well as the MAXIMUM dimensions. And mATX board can be shorter or narrower than the standard, but it can not exceed them.

If it's the mobo with the horizontal DIMM slots on the top of the motherboard, then that's because Biostar put their CPU socket lower than normal and they needed to make room for a large aftermarket cooler.

>>

Right, I'm from Australia, and the purpose is to play modern video games at 50-60fps at high quality or better. Is a gtx1060 over the top? It's goddamn expensive, but I don't want to stint on the graphics card if it will make a noticeable difference.
>>
>>57169366
Drop to an i3 6100 or i5 6500. Can drop to B150 or keep the Z170 for overclocking an i7
Get a budget SSD
Get a 550W PSU
>>
>>57169366
>>57169396
Lower PSU. You can also get a slightly lower mobo, if you like.

You are missing the HSF.

If you really want to squeeze the budget, you can drop the SSD, and add one when you can afford it. Alternatively, if you do not have any movies/series/amine right now, get just the SSD, and buy the HDD when you can afford it.

>>

I have two nice SSDs.
So if I go with raid 0, I'll get up to twice the read and twice the write speeds, and have all the space, but if one drive fails I'm fucked?
And if I go raid 1, I'll basically have a constant backup drive? Up to twice the read and just normal write speeds with one drives worth of space?
And I need 3+ drives to do anything else...
What should I do? They're only 500GB each so raid 0 sounds nice but I don't want twice the possibility of failure
>>
>>57168036

>>57169764
Just buy a HDD and do hourly/daily backups.

Or cough up the money and buy two more SSD's for a RAID 1+0 setup.

>>57169771

>>
>>57169820
Everything I'm reading about my Intel 730s is that they're basically enterprise-level data controllers and over engineered to be super reliable, and basically made to be used in raid.
But I also hear that SSDs have tendencies to fuck up and fail out of nowhere, I've had two 2.5" HDDs fail but no SSDs yet, are they really unreliable or should I just go for raid 0 and hope having Intel inside me is a good thing?
>>
>>57169967
When 730s die they apparently go into read-only mode for one power cycle, you could get your data off when it does fail

i7-6700k I found from some guy on Kijiji unopened and unused for straight up $400 CAD no tax. Also would have to somehow figure out how to a powermac g5 I got for free.

~$1000

i7-4790 for $300 also from some guy on Kijiji with a stock cooler. Also found one for $200 but I feel that's too low to trust. Would potentially buy the case in this situation.

~$830
If not buying case then:

I'm a bit out of the loop regarding hardware but from what i've seen lately i could go with an i5-6400 + 8gb ddr4 + 60gb ssd + 450/500w + b150 + hdd 1/2tb. Thanks in advance

Hi friendos

My PC isn't great (970, i5 3350p CPU or something) however i managed to get a decent 70-90 fps from the bf1 beta whilst running everything all on high. It was super smooth and I had no issues at all.

The final game however, not so much. Occasional stuttering and usually between 30-50 fps.

My question is, if I buy a new CPU/mobo/ram, would that give me a decent fps boost? I'd probably go for the 6700k.

Or should I just not really be aiming for decent fps all on high with a 970?

Do you think my 2500k at 4.6ghz will last through Kaby Lake?

>>
>>57171124
Well $1000 Canadian is $750 American. Not to mention parts just cost more here. Also this is no tax or shipping which would easily increase the price by about $200.

I can probably sell the 390x for $420 and use the money to buy a monitor + ssd. Then save up and wait for the 1080ti whenever it comes out.

Who knows maybe he already sold it and forgot to take the ad down.
>>
>>57171214
You'll have to upgrade your 970 too if you want to crank settings high. I'd pick i5 6500, b150 motherboard and spend the remaining money on a new graphics card instead of a better processor or mobo.

anything i missed here?
the idea here is to run freenas virtualized with a pcie passthrough so I dont have any issues with zfs, Ill just be bringing my current platters over and adding the others in
the rest of the resources will be for windows, video editing/rendering, etc
I chose the usb cad because its pci, not pcie, keeping another expansion lane open for later on
I know a 1tb ssd is a bit overkill but its reasonable performance for a reasonable price and the extra quick storage space would be nice for projects, especially for audio production and virtual instruments, I'm running out of local storage so I'll be adding the 2tb hitachi as well as bringing the WD black over
I know it wont all fit as is in the r5, but i love the case and Ill mod the motherboard tray to fit the mobo and then cut a section of the top out for the front panel expansion, then the hard drives will fit in the front cages, with the other 2 mechanicals mounted on a psu cover I'll be making, and the 2 ssd in the back tray mounts

with that Noctua cooler it'd be a waste not to overlock. I'd get a far cheaper cooler if you don't plan on doing so.
>>
>>57171566
Yeah that makes sense. Where I'm hung up on is whether I will actually go through with the effort of OCing or not. Given the mobo I like is an OC mobo I felt it would be strange to get a non-OC CPU. By extention, getting these OC parts why not get a good fan?

On the other hand, no OC and get non-K CPU, B/H (forget which) mobo, and roll with stock CPU cooler. Save about $200 this route I think.

Well the heatsink I have on there now isn't even a radeon, but from an nvidia. Doesn't have a fan and doesn't really have a way to strap a fan to it that would work.

The actual stock one had a small fan and covered all the vital areas, but that fan croaked not that long ago. If I ziptied it to that one it could work, but I don't know where I could ziptie it to. I need to take another look at it.

I probably need to get new thermal pads too.

>>
>>57176234
ok if you save that much it could be worth it.

>>57176225
Here's the thing though. The heatsink on there now doesn't cover the parts the old heatsink was covering and the one on there now covers parts that weren't covered on the old one. I'm concerned the fan wouldn't even do anything at all.
I feel like the stock heatsink would do better if I just reapply it with new thermal stuff and the fan ghetto tied to it.

But I'll give it a try.

What's a good 120 fan
>>
>>57176311
oh yeah use the old heatsink then. not sure you would need to replace the pads unless you ripped them to pieces.

What's the likelihood of the 1060 or 1070 getting sales on Cyber Monday? I researched last year's black friday and found that certain 980s and 970s went on sale then, but they weren't as comparatively new that year that the 1xxx series were this year.

I find it really hard to believe that vendors would have any reason to markdown such a popular and fast-selling series of cards for Cyber Monday, so it's okay if I just splurge on a 1060 now without thinking right?

Extremely low, maybe the asus blower card or the half-length gigabyte card will drop down to $380 like they're supposed to be but no, I'm very confident there won't be any good 1070/1060/1080 sales on Black Friday
And cyber Monday is a meme, it doesn't actually exist, don't wait for the leftover deals, get them on friday

you can get a z170 mobo for almost the same and OC if you do some research, if not get a cheaper mobo.

Yes. Moore's law is taking more time to cycle now. It's basically because the size of the atom is getting in the way, and CPU manufacturers can't just increase clock speeds any more for more performance.

It is. Higher fps may not be that much of a difference, but average and min fps completely blows away sandy. Where sandy drops to 40s (even ocd) the skylake stays above 65.

>>
>>57178073
the consistency is that windows recognizes major hardware changes (mobo, usually) and will deactivate itself.
As far as I have heard, your key is registered based on the NIC, but I haven't bothered to do any research on the matter as I haven't bought windows ever. used my oem xp laptop until 7 came out, upgraded w/ Daz, then 10 upgraded pirated 7 to legit 10.
>>
>>57178445
K is just slightly different and better than the P, point is there are alternatives, like Gigabyte or MSI/ASRock if budget is a concern.
RAM speed does matter, especially for CPU taxing tasks. If you don't want to accept help, why do you even ask for it?

faster ram like another anon said because you get performance boost from it now thanks to better memory controller in latest gen CPU.

CX series is sub-par quality, get a Gold rated PSU. EVGA, XFX, Seasonic, Silverstone and Corsair are good.

How should I interpret the timings on the ram for picking the best one?

Also isn't the gold/diamond ratings PSUs a bit of a meme? They only tell you about the efficiency in terms of how much power is lost to heat, and nothing about the quality of the parts.
>>
>>57178702
In most situations yes, but if the price difference is marginal, why not get the 3000-3200 sweet spot?
It's not like you have to pay 50$ more to get better RAM.
>>
>>57178813
>based on the NIC
as far as I'm able to find, win8 and the win10 upgrade license is based on the hardware overall, so likely is tied to the CPU, Mobo, and the HDD the OS is installed on.

About to buy an Athlon X4 845 + an A88X motherboard + some semi-decent ram. Should I go for a shitty Intel build on this equally shitty budget (~140 bucks)? Should I pay a bit more for an X4 860? I'm reading these Carrizo cores (or whatever, the latest ones) are more power-efficient, the 65W TDP looks pretty desirable to me, but I'm worried about it having only 8 lanes of PCIe 3.0, as opposed to 16 lanes on the X4 860. Surely it won't bottleneck my oldass videocard (I don't even remember what model it is, gtx 570 or maybe gtx 750), or would it?

You're fine with 8 PCIe lanes up to about a 960/1050Ti. No room to upgrade with with the FM2 socket though.

If you want to be able to upgrade just go with a Pentium or preferably an i3 6100 and LGA1151. If you have to buy RAM anyway then I'd go with the 1151 platform

>>57177343
Depends on what you're buying. Probably the only half decent used card compared to the current offerings is the 380x for $140. Possibly a 970 for about $180.

It depends on how you set the second screen up. If you're duplicating the displays, then yes, it's a shitty stretched image. If you set it up to extend your desktop across both monitors, then it should be at native resolution, but you should check to be sure.
