I can't decide between using Fedora or Debian in my next Linux install.

Tell me why I should use one over the other. What made YOU use one over the other?

I'm currently running Ubuntu 16.10.

Gentoo

Debian. It just werks.

You misspelled arch Linux
>>
>>57166288
This is part of the reason why I'm considering Fedora.
>>57166390
I've actually messed with Arch Linux. While I do enjoy Pacman, I feel like it's a bit overhyped.
>>57166298
And that's part of the reason why I want to use Debian. Much more stable.
>>
they're both shit. I tried Fedora for a bit on two separate occasions, and I put Debian on a gf's old laptop, had a terrible time trying to maintain both.
>>
>>57166275

they're not even comparable, debian is supported for years at a time and a new fedora release comes out every 6 months with a single release only being supported for 13 months (past 1 release + 1 month)

if you're planning on running debian testing/unstable then fedora is the choice, the hint is in the name of the branches used

Install a real open source Unix that can be instrumented, has a modern filesystem, a sane init system, and real containerization.
>>
>>57166439
debian testing is still way more stable than fedora
>>
>>57166464

if you're using one of the shitty unmaintained spins and doing some dodgy shit on top of that, sure, otherwise post your setup because I cannot believe that for a second
>>
>>57166275
i use and like fedora, if i used debian it would have to be sid or stretch because "stable" debian is just too old for me. i haven't had any breakage but i always log out and ctrl-alt-2 to do updates. centos works pretty well too, not quite as many repos but epel and negativo17 have just about everything i personally need, it was more of a hassle than straight fedora though so i'm back to fedora 24 workstation (gnome); works for me.
>>
>>57166275
Go fuck yourself OP. Linux fanboy -.-
>>
>>57166591
youre probably thinking of stretch
testing is what ubuntu is based on without all the 3rd party canonical stuff and ppas
ive never seen stuff break because of an update in debian testing but i occasionally see people here complain about fedora updates breaking stuff
>>
>>57166275
>Ubuntu 16.10
Why are you already thinking about your next install? You seem to have just done an install.
>>
>>57166758
I consistently break GNUL and a few other things that make my system lag, along with crash and burn. I fiddle with the really important files too much.
>>
>>57166275
Fedora is more bleeding edge, Debian is more stable and secure. Note that Tails is based on Debian.
>>
Fedora All the way
>>
>>57166815
Well in that case, Fedora has a shit repo with fewer packages so go with Debian
>>
>>57166879
Thank you, I'll add that to my ever growing list of "Reasons to switch to Debian"

fedora

Fedora Offers alot of different suites (ie: Security,Animation,Forensics, etc)

>ive never seen stuff break because of an update in debian testing but i occasionally see people here complain about fedora updates breaking stuff

I don't browse /g/ often but I duck into the linux threads occasionally and I don't see people complaining about fedora breaking stuff

the spins are horribly broken (unpolished, rather) but that's the case on every distro, the solution is to netinst much like you would on debian or stick to gnome

>>57166879

what do you think rpmfusion is for? I can make shitty unsubstantial arguments too! look:

debian uses a shitty kernel which won't support your wireless or graphics cards, use fedora
>>
>>57166275
Debian has more packages... but Fedora has more packages worth using. Your call, but Linus and pretty much all the professional Linux users of the world are onboard with Redhat or Canonical. Debian is a textile mill.
>>
OP here, I'm going to install Debian Stable 8.6! Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

debian stays out of your way more, the base is good but all the fedora-isms and *kits in the desktop version are awful
