Sony made many so-called "Hi-Scan" Trinitrons which could display 1080i but are only capable of displaying ~853 horizontal resolution which means you're losing more than half of the horizontal resolution of a 1920x1080 image.

For use with "HD" consoles you will get the best results with a "Super Fine Pitch" Trinitron like the KV-34XBR910 and KV-34XBR960. These have 1440 horizontal resolution which provide a much crisper image for HD content.

The Hi-Scan models probably still look fantastic but you might run into more issues with blurry text or UI elements with systems/games designed with HDTVs in mind.

I found an official manual for that model but it's in Croatian. I don't understand much of it but it seems like that model isn't HD-capable at all, but supports SD in several formats (NTSC, PAL, and SECAM).
