Electronic engineer here.

No. Scaling ended this year. The free ride is over, we can't make the chips any smaller.

Electronic engineer here.

No. They said that 20 years ago: "WAAAAAAAAAH WE'LL NEVER BREAK THE NANOMETER BARRIER, GATE WILL BE SO FUCKING THIN ELECTRONS WILL PASS THROUGH". They said that 10 years ago: "WAAAAAAAAAH WE'LL NEVER BREAK THE 50 NANOMETER BARRIER, GATE WILL BE SO FUCKING THIN ELECTRONS WILL PASS THROUGH".

Where are we now?
>>
>>57157119
7nm, but this time we can actually see the effects of quantum tunneling. There's a limit, and we're getting close
>>
>>57157119
>WE'LL NEVER BREAK THE NANOMETER BARRIER
>Where are we now?

We're at 10nm gate WIDTH and you're dreaming about "breaking the nanometer barrier" when we're down to about 6 atoms for the gate thickness (1nm or so?) and have exhausted all the exotic materials we could use to make it thicker.

It's over. We've squeezed as much as we can out of planar processes. Cooling is hard enough now, when you go into three dimensions you're going to compound the problem by a factor of about 1.8x-2x.

The only thing we can do from this point is work on self-assembly, but that's a chemist's job and 30 years away.

Anyone else excited about the prospect of having massive computers to get more power out of them? We'll all have entire rooms in our houses taken up because of the demands of Crysis 6 and we've already hit the maximum transistor density that is possible with classical physics.

I think all that needs to happen is the speed of internet needs to increase in terms of ping mostly. If we all had 100% fibre optic cables connected to each other our computers could be connected to each other as much as it is connected to itself. We wouldn't need the extra processing power in our own homes if we could outsource it. Though it would take a massive effort of standardization to make it efficient, I do think it's the future of computing
