And another companies are following the train.

honestly it's the same business model intel uses
at least intel is straight forward with their technology advancements being in a 2 year cycle

apple supported the 4s until the most recent iOS so that's probably better than most mobile device support

apple's business model is pretty straightforward compared to its neighbors. everything costs money. the data you store on their servers is yours and private, and that's about the long and short of it. if you want in, it's expensive because some smart guys like Don Norman figured out smart interaction design shit like 20 years ago and apple have been coasting ever since. also they take some time to make the cases look nice (this is different from design as i used the term before).

meanwhile google, facebook, et al. offer "free" or super cheap services and sometimes products (e.g. amazon's dash) when in reality they're only giving it away as the bait for a much larger trap involving data mining and increasingly intelligence gathering, and we're all the mice. i understand that this is problematic, i reluctantly use these services anyway, but it boggles my mind that people argue the mouse trap approach is better or that the approach apple took is objectively or even subjectively bad (as people on /g/ seem to do pretty often).

the basic (albeit expensive) transaction model might mean that apple are arrogant, condescending, and even douches, but at least they're not sneaky about it with ulterior motives.

Apple has released about a dozen iPhone models

In the same time (less actually,) Samsung has released over 3 dozen Galaxy phone models. One even self destructs within a month

Sony has a dozen Xperia phones on the market right now.

a lot of people on /g/ have only interacted with iOS (which is pretty locked down), and figure that their experience with iOS is equally applicable to OS X. this isn't entirely surprising, since many of these likely indian shitposters didn't even have apple stores in their country until recently:
http://money.cnn.com/2016/06/20/news/economy/india-apple-stores-foreign-investment/

some people seem to have been in the same room as a macbook pro before, but either get intimidated by the shell or simply never knew it existed, and figured this must means it's a "fisher price" operating system
>>
>>57153076

I have used a Mac before. It's a very sterile, bland & boring experience, ultimately. It's just like an oversized iPad with keyboard attached. It was a nicely designed piece of aluminium but it was not for me.

I did have an iPhone back when they first came out but Android just outpaced and out-featured iOS at every turn.

Nice-looking devices, but, bland.

So I've never owned an iPhone in my life.

I just got an iPhone 4 an hour ago because it was cheap as shit and I wanted to try something new.

Why the bloody fuck isn't the option to download the old version of apps native to the damn device? Why do I need to sync it to download literally anything?

Please tell me there is a way around this.

the sort that thinks that readily available copies of things stored in servers should be downloadable at any version, instead of forcing you buy a new version to further convenience yourse...

Oh, that's the point, isn't it? It's deliberately made to put me into pain for not shelling out $700 .
>>
>>57153290
Because sometimes the new version requires a newer phone model and I shouldn't need to shell out for another phone to continue using software I already own and works fine for what I want it to do.

And because sometimes the developer fucks things up and breaks your workflow in an update.

On Android we partially solve this using Titanium Backup, which can backup apps before you get a questionable upgrade or before moving to a different phone, and restore them as needed.
>>
>>57153397
The worst part about this is that the older versions. Are right there. In the servers. Ready to download.

But you have to have it connected to a desktop to install, for no fucking reason other than to make you miserable.

>>
>>57153241
>Why the bloody fuck isn't the option to download the old version of apps native to the damn device?
What iOS version are you on? I got a 3GS on 6.1 and it asks you if you want to download the last version that supported your phone.
>>
>>57153333
it's not your software. it belongs to the developer(s). if they want to break backwards compatibility and move people to a new API or something like that, knowing that apple isn't going behind their back and serving old versions of software is nice.

>>57153397
sometimes older versions are replaced for reasons other than features. sometimes security flaws are made apparent or some other circumstance dictates that you *should* move on to a new version.

but fundamentally it's not your software to make this decision about. if you want to use snapchat, you have to accept the app that snapchat has asked apple to serve.

(replace snapchat with whatever you want. please don't have a shitstorm about this)

it doesn't even really make sense to insist on the older version of software. if it interacts with any remote server, it's very likely that sufficiently old versions won't send recognizable queries because the server on the other end has evolved in tandem with the iOS app.

next time you buy a 6 year old phone, think about this shit.
>>
>>57153036
that looks fun!
>>
>>57153241
There is, when you try and download an app on an older OS it asks you if you want the last compatible version (if one exists).
>>

>next time you buy a 6 year old phone, think about this shit.

To be fair, the thing that drives money into developing new technology is consumerism.
>>
>>57153306
i wasn't upset. i'm concerned about you. you brought up boredom and sleepiness a few times and it just sounds like you're tired or something. i've never heard of anyone being insufficiently intellectually stimulated by an operating system (or, for that matter, blaming their lack of stimulation on the operating system), so i expressed some concern for your well-being.

i don't know where this stimulation critique is coming from. my stimulation comes from the stuff i work on while using my computer. i think if you're looking for mental stimulation from your operating system, you're either looking for contrived hoops to jump through that your operating system creates for you (and what motivation you would have for that is beyond me), or you're saying something else. not really sure what, not really sure i care.

That's all well and good, but I'll decide that for myself. If I'd rather have a version with a minor vulnerability in it than a clunky, broken, slow version that makes me want to throw it across the room every time I try to use it, that's my call.

>but fundamentally it's not your software to make this decision about. if you want to use snapchat, you have to accept the app that snapchat has asked apple to serve.
I bought the phone and the app, and I'll damn well use whatever version I like.

>it doesn't even really make sense to insist on the older version of software. if it interacts with any remote server, it's very likely that sufficiently old versions won't send recognizable queries because the server on the other end has evolved in tandem with the iOS app.
This is one legit reason to force me to upgrade an app. But some apps don't connect to servers, or only make normal HTTP requests to websites the format the result on the screen.

let's be clear what your call is.

it's your call whether you're willing to give up some stability for usability. it's not your call whether you get access to a binary that someone else owns. if snapchat or facebook or whoever wanted to stop letting people download their apps, that's their call. it's not our right to keep downloading the app from third party sources. it's certainly a reality of the internet never really making anything unavailable, but in legal and perhaps ethical terms, it's their call which version to continue serving and supporting because it's their work.

I realize this is an apple hate thread, but I want to get a cheap MP3 player and I was wondering what you guys thought about maybe getting an old used ipod? Not getting a Zune, or and iPod Touch or anything, just maybe a Nano or whatever the original line was called, if it had a name.

If you got no other easy choice then get it. Apple won't get a single cent from an old used ipod anyway.
And nobody will thing you're an idiot unless you go around screaming "I can listen music on the go. Apple is so innovative! Totally worth a patent"

Google glass is gay and stupid, I don't need a shitty power hungry atom in my phone (and an even bigger monopoly for Intel), that windows phone is hideous and needs to go back to the 90s with the other shitty PDAs, the Motorola Atrix or whatever was an interesting concept, but ultimately pointless. If I'm at home with a monitor and keyboard why would I want to use a phone to run all that?

iPhone already seamlessly transfers all the important stuff I need from it to my computer instantly without even having to plug it in.

tl;dr your future that didn't happen sucks.

Wouldn't it be so much better if they improved on the jack instead of just removing it?
Like having the cable to be removable, so it could charge from the phone or be wireless?
Removing options while the alternatives is bad is just stupid.
This might change in a few years, maybe this forces development, but since their demographic is women and poor black people, this will just lead to fewer people having headsets and thus I have to hear their shitty taste in music when they play it in their loudspeakers.

A follow up to the russian ISS guy.

Apparently the russians got viruses floating around the ISS' laptops, and the astronauts were forced to move to Linux. The Linux Foundation got tasked to educating them.

The Apple multitasking is actually inspired from DuARTe's work on WebOS, and not from HTC.
