When power is drawn from the master socket, it turns on other sockets. If you plug the PC into the master socket, and shit like speakers, monitor, printer into the "controlled by master" ones, those peripherals will turn off automatically when you turn off or sleep your PC.

It saves on your power bill, without having to remember to shut everything off. And if you have a monitor that draws some standby current when off, it stops that too.

We have these too. This one even has extra space around one outlet so you can plug in a big wallwart without blocking one of the other plugs. They're cheap as fuck and they work. But for more money you can get ones that suppress surges, filter the power, and switch some of the outlets on and off automatically when the master outlet draws power.
