Yet their userland tools BTFO the Windows command line so badly that MS implemented a native ELF executable loader to run them under Windows. Hmm.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as a reply, is in fact, retardation/autism, or as I've recently taken to calling it, retardation plus autism.

You have no idea what youre talking about if you think Oracle has anything to do with Illumos/OpenIndiana. It was forked from OpenSolaris when Sun CDDL'd Solaris. It says so in the wikipedia article.

Gnu utils are optional see pic related. You set your PATH to which bins you want. your options are default: Solaris binaries
/usr/gnu/bin: gnu utils
/usr/xpg4/bin: Fully POSIX compliant bins
/usr/ucb/bin: BSD binary utils

Sun Solaris was a packrat when it came to backwards compatibility since SunOS was BSD based and Solaris2 was ATT SysVR4.

If you need any more help just ask! Been using Solaris since college.

wtf are you even talking about? Even the DOS that came with my old 80's IBM PC supported hierarchical directory structures on its 360K floppies.

Linux Kernel + GNU userland
= GNU
that's the ONLY acceptable name for it, I refuse to even mention the name Linux unless we are SPECIFICALLY talking about the kernel, things like Alpine Linux which doesn't use GNU is simply put Alpine OS, or whatever it is called, Linux is just the kernel in it. Also the stale GAHNOO + LINUX + SYSTEMD + GNOME + CHROMIUM meme is really fucking bad because we are talking about the actual Operating System itself, and what compromises of an OS is a userland and a kernel, and originally the project was GNU and Linux was just something that was adopted into GNU. Linus bootlickers are fucking idiots
>>
i hate GNU but i genuinely want a full GNU operating system just to tickle my UNIX autism

yes, that means it runs Mach, HURD, Sheperd, the Coreutils and etc.
>>
>>57153748
that exists, you can build it yourself or just use Debian's GNU OS, it's fairly fucking terrible because of how underdeveloped Hurd is, if Hurd was as developed as Linux then I believe it would be faster than a GNU system running Linux as it's kernel

i actually have tried that, then i realized i was on an amd64 system and that cross-compiling would be a pain in the ass
>Debian's GNU OS
outdated, unfortunately

i'd like to have something really minimal too, have nothing but the essential GNU components

Why not run OpenIndiana; it's both Unix and UNIX.

OpenSolaris is a descendant of the UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4) code base developed by Sun and AT&T in the late 1980s. It is the only version of the System V variant of UNIX available as open source
>>
>>57153876
no, i just like having a lot of unixes and unix-likes floating around

i'll check out openindiana sometime, but right now i can't since my computer's overheating left and right

>>
>>57153904
i think someone should come up with something like BSD ports for a GNU OS

i think it also stays in the spirit of free software, since it just fetches the source and automatically builds it for you with the appropriate patches, making the programs easy to hack

hell maybe you could just recycle pkgsrc for it, it was designed for that

I hope that it becomes usable as a main kernel at some point. The design is very elegant, even though it is not fully implemented. I wonder where it would be now if Linux had not caught on.
