How does Linux handles drivers?

In windows you have to install a proprietary driver for each device, or use the generic ones bundled in with the OS.

In linux...?
I would like to know how it works.
>>
How do I protect my system? I'm new to Arch, forgive me. I messed up something configuring xorg so I booted up the arch image, mounted my filesystem to the live iso session and edited the files to return it to its old state.

Basically anyone with an ISO usb stick can get into my system. How do I prevent people from having almost free access to my shit? Or do I need some kind of disc encryption?

sudo python script.py
it works. Now I want to have the script globally available like any other command, so I made it executable and dropped it into my script dir ~/bin, but it is only available when I call it without sudo. With

I get a command not found.

>>57145096
in most cases, drivers are shipped with the linux kernel itself
proprietary or other out-of-tree (not shipped with the kernel) drivers are installed like other software as kernel modules

provided you don't need any of the latter kind, you don't need to do anything special (at least assuming the distro kernel you're using has any required drivers enabled, you can build linux with any set of drivers you want, most desktop distros ship will most things available)
updating them is just a matter of keeping your kernel up to date

Every distribution can be "minimal". "Easy" is relative.

As long as you don't use a distribution which only accepts free software in their repositories, it will work equally the same on all assuming the same kernel is used.

Minimal in the sense of not really much stuff. Easy meaning that you have a system that's ready to use, needing to only configuring few things.

>No distribution hides stuff from you.
Hide in the meaning, easy to configure. not having to use an application to change something while it could be easily made in a texted.
>>
>>57146618

Ignored where? The font set in your i3 config only applies to i3, its titlebars and perhaps the taskbar. The font set in the GTK3 config applies to GTK3 programs, Firefox for example.
>>
>>57146621

>Minimal in the sense of not really much stuff.
See >>57146466

>Easy meaning that you have a system that's ready to use, needing to only configuring few things.
That's an oxymoron together with your previous request.

>Hide in the meaning, easy to configure. not having to use an application to change something while it could be easily made in a texted.
That is not distribution specific, it depends on the program itself.

I decided to switch to a more trustworthy OS than I have now. I thought that I will buy Win 10, but then I quickly remembered that I do not want to pay ~100 euros to look at advertisments and be a part of data digging. (I can do that already with my pirated Win 7 - pic related). Although I would install Win 10 with its customer statistics mining and advertisments if it was balanced with the OS being free.

I didn't really care about that up until this moment. On this Windows I have never used Antivirus programs and I have pirated a considerable amount. Its safe to say that at this moment is am a part of thousands of botnets, accumulated from the time I installed this Win 7. Normally I would just reinstall the pirated OS whenever the botnets slowed my comp down too much. Now, I am soon founding a small company to develop some software and I think that this is the time to start worrying about security.

So far I have researched that Xubuntu might possibly be up my alley. (Using the resources provided in the OP) However, I am not Linux savvy enough to ask the correct questions. Is Xubuntu a good bet or is there smth else I must consider.

Also, AMA about using a literal critter infested botnet for my daily stuff.

It might not be firefox desu. I think it has to dow ith my window manager and gtk. Basically when I open the window it'll hang as a black box for a few seconds before actually rendering the window. Same with closing or resizing it. This happens on chrome and any gtk graphical programs so ti's not specific to firefox i guess but is my main issue atm.

Firefox isn't quite as responisve as chrome albeit much better security and i Think if it's pretty hackable as for making it more responsive.

Main problem is the gtk black box shit. I'm using i3 wm.
>>
>>57148360

I'm on xfce and never had an issue, so it's entirely possible that it's just an i3 problem.

Don't worry about the desktop background - its just what a furry creature would "realistically" look like.

I am not really seeking out viruses. I just don't care. What the fuck are they going to use my information for anyways. If they want to personalize my "ads" then godspeed to them. For some reason, most of the stuff I like is quite niche and I usually find them by randomly stumbling on them. So, if their mighty customer data mine can advertise me actual things I would buy, then I would even be pleased. Lately Youtube has decided to show me ads, which are so much up my alley that I have even watched some of them till the end and visited their website to get the thing.

And my valuable data is pretty well protected. See pic. Every valuable action (acessing bank account, making payments, etc) can only be done while my National Identity Card is inserted into my card reader and at every step I am presented with multiple "Insert PIN" promts. And even if someone managed to get access to my bank account, I would first recieve a message on my phone asking if it is me who is acessing it or not. And in the end, there is really nothing to take at this moment of time.

A question I have made a few days ago:

So basically, I was fucking around with Ubuntu, tried XFCE so I would decide if ditching unity was a good idea.

Seeing that I had tearing issues I just looked for compton, installed it, all good... except I noticed that dragging windows was fairly slow. It feels as though I'm just trying to physically drag it. There's some resistance that disappears of course, with no composition.

So, I tried compiz afterwards just to fuck around and... just like in Unity, dragging windows is fast. None of that slow bullshit. However, there's no tearing either, vsync is enabled.

So, does anyone know why this happens? I'm used to hear that compiz is terrible, shit and slow, and sometimes buggy. But compton be fucking with me. Any ideas?

Anybody know how to fix this.

I'm trying to install manjaro Linux but after i used rufus to burn a iso onto a USB and booted into it on my computer i got this

>>
>>57150167
seems like '/proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info' is no such file or directory.

Does it go into a dracut line after?
I've had issues like that when the USB is named differently than what rufus named it. Typically the iso-name minus .iso

I've tried Fedora, and while I like it alot, the fact that I have to do some fuckery to install deb only packages is turning me off from it.

Benefits:

-You get out of the microsoft ecosystem
-You have a system that can be customized to your liking in more than a few ways
-Older hardware is better supported overall

Costs:

-Some of your windows programs might not run well on it
-You're more likely to run into stability issues with certain distros by just updating than you were probably with windows 7 two years ago having the common sense to use it properly
-Newer hardware might have some difficulties with support
-It is also likely that you will have to learn a lot of new things if you want a decent distro

Then again, I find myself just using running mpv ~/mu/* because fuck mpd's autistic music database shit.

moc is cool too, TUI controls but without database autism. It was my first player before mpd + ncmpcpp, a combination everyone HAS to use.

All gui players are gay.

learn by doing; you could go straight to debian if you're not the type to get flustered and give up. man pages are very technical and dense, they can be hard on new users.
in short, if you're determined, go for debian sooner, if you're easily discouraged, stick with ubuntu until you're familiar with the basic shell commands and programs
btw, i recommend zsh for new linux users -- better to start with the best than to get familiar with tcsh or bash and have to make the switch after your bad habits are ingrained

that shouldn't be set in your personal .vimrc, only in the default system settings. it should default on, but turn off automatically if a .vimrc or .gvimrc is found in your vim home

Actually
nocompatible
is implied when you have a vimrc at all, so it shouldn't make any difference if you do or don't have it at any point in your vimrc.

>>
>>57157019
What it does is adds the path to your eclipse folder to your PATH, which is where shells look for executables. Any directory listed in your PATH will have its executables be runnable from anywhere by typing its name.

so here, let me explain all of it
export <-- exports the variable for the duration of whatever shell is reading this file (your bash shell)
PATH= <-- the variable you're going to export
$PATH <-- expands to your current PATH. You can see what it is by typing echo $PATH in a shell
: <-- separator for the directories in your PATH. If you ran echo $PATH above you will see there's a colon between each one
~/eclipse/java-neon/eclipse <-- the folder your eclipse executable is in

the ~/.bashrc file is sourced every time you open an interactive shell or log in from a display manager or whatever. If dmenu is ran after you've got a directory into your PATH, it will know to look there for eclipse.
>>
>>57157059
Doesn't work.
When doing "echo $PATH" it finds that new path but dmenu still won't find it. ;-;

Yes, it actually is not known whether SystemD is spyware. BUT the fact that there are more plausible arguments against SystemD than supporting it makes you think. And if there are other alternatives which work as good as SystemD with a lesser risk of having spyware or else inside, why not use those alternatives instead?

To the KDE Neon part: I read they'll implement WaylandX isntead of SystemD with version 5.8. Now that 5.8 is released I couldn't find any information regarding that topic, except for the fact that the unstable/developers edition of KDE Neon will be without SystemD. Because I can't make head nor tail of it, I wanted somebody to explain whether the stable release uses Waylandx or not.
Also, my question still stands:

>BUT the fact that there are more plausible arguments against SystemD
> lesser risk of having spyware or else inside, why not use those alternatives
>they'll implement WaylandX isntead of SystemD

This whole post is like a train-wreck of misinformation, lack of knowledge and general retardation. You're beyond help.

Oh, an image with some incoherent, subjective, anecdotal ramblings of a random person. I am convinced.

Then please enlighten me. What you describe as "misinformation, lack of knowledge and general retardation" is just formed out off various information and arguments I read online. Humans can change their opinion with additional information. Nobody who's open-minded is beyond help.

This is the dumbest shit I've ever read.

That's what everyone said before Snowdon when you talked to them about how we're spied on.
Also, there are still no counter-arguments heard, shills.

Does anyone know of good mice that work well in linux? Specifically I need one that has good scrolling speed.

My current steelseries rival is very slow with scrolling, and the only way to make it faster is using imwheel which breaks things that are useful. I can edit firefox to scroll properly and also chrome if I wanted, but for other applications there's no way.
