On my last installation of Ubuntu I encrypted the /home partition using Ubuntu's out of the box settings from the GUI installer. Now I'm reinstalling it. Is it desirable (or even possible) to encrypt the entire file system? Would that be just as easy for a newbie as encrypting /home? Would it adversely affect performance? Would it be harder to recover if the system breaks somehow? What are the pros/cons?

Friends. I need to connect my WordPress.com blog to the GNU Social network. I will do this through IFTTT.

So, I registered WordPress as an app on GNU Social, and received those informations:
>consumer key
>consumer secret
>request token URL
>access token URL
>authorize URL

This is OAuth? This... is... MADNESS! I don't know exactly how to format the request IFTTT will send. It must send the request to "update status" (post a new "tweet"/quip). Is this the right way to format the request?
 https://quitter.se/api/oauth/request_token/<consumer key>:<consumer secret>/statuses/update

Can we all agree that Windows system of separating hard drives, partitions, and disc drives by individual drive letters is superior to what Linux does?
>>

Maybe? Explain why, please. I will evaluate your proposition after this.
>>
>>57133252
Probably not as easy as the GUI Installer, but it's not exactly hard.
Performance should be fine.
Well, in case of breakage you can't just boot from usb and mount your system, you'd need to manually decrypt it first. (Which is possible)

The advantage is that nobody can just mount your drive and steal your data.

>I've been pleasantly surprised with how good wifi support has gotten on linux.

It's gotten a ton better, from what I remember of installing Ubuntu 10-ish years ago.

I've still had problems though, even lately when I installed Gentoo in a VM. Wifi would work, and it'd identify eth0 and I'd set it up and so on, but when I rebooted, eth0 was gone and was replaced with enp0s3 which was confusing and annoying.

I do wish that the livecd would set up the firmware and get the modules you need for you, though. Is there a reason why this sort of thing isn't done automatically?

Mint blocks updates for specific packages to provide stability because they modified a lot of stuff that may break when the packages get updates (systemd, xorg, kernel). So you have the choice between security updates or potential breakage.

Isn't it more accurate to say that the website got hijacked to point to an ISO with a backdoor? That's no doubt a major fuckup, but I don't believe the official build had a backdoor.

What I mean to say is that the issue was with their site's security and not with Mint itself. Unless you're talking about a different issue than I'm thinking of.

When the program says you to tell CMake where to find the compiler by setting either the environment variable "CXX" or the CMake cache entry CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER to the full path of the compiler, or to the compiler name if it is in the PATH, then it means that this is actually what you're supposed to do.

The only GNU/Linux Distro one should be using for best compatibility and graphics performance is Ubuntu. Everything else is trash and requires band-aids to work. It's why AMD officially uses Ubuntu for their proprietary graphics drivers.

By running a program that's outside of the WINE environment (WINEPREFIX defaults to ~/.wine) the program will only work if it could run off a flash drive in real Windows. Sometimes programs make assumptions about the environment or have hard-coded paths which can make it not work but just try it, you'll know for sure.

YOU again. How hard is it for a dumb debibabby to understand that you can set EXACTLY what kernel modules and hooks to enable during installation before running mkinitcpio. You wouldn't know because you have a babby GUI installer that doesn't have this functionality.

Kernels with sensible modules enabled just work, debian's freetard kernel doesn't.

>package aren't splitted
What the fuck is the use of it?

Reminder that debian's repo are the most retardedly bloated one in the world of Linux distros. Meta packages have no -meta flags and debian has distro specific codes and bugs therein which makes it buggy.

In contrast to Arch, Debian comes botnetfree out of the box and if the user needs a specifix module, he is being asked to enable it, which results in a perfectly fine, lightweight and working kernel. I'm install gentoo on my netbook, and I'm at the stage where I just downloaded the tarball, and I'm to extract it.

However, it seems tar doesn't even exist on my system. I've followed very closely up to this point, and I get the error /bin/tar: Input/Output error

How the hell do I get openvpn going on ubuntu 16.04 as a client?

I am failing hard at this. As near as I can tell the gui is bugged so I am giving up and running command line now.

My server is my pfsense box and has nice export packages for lets say mac or windows. Apparently linux can get fucked.

To complicate things I am running through my url which I think I set up right on the server.

Anyone got good info on what I need from the pfsense box? Ive got my keys all in a .p12 package that I can unpack if needed, figured that out already. Was reading something earlier that said I need to put them all together in order and feed it to the command line to get it going.

You're gonna find that literally every remotely popular community on the internet has a vocal minority which makes things appear shittier than they actually are.

Most people are lurking and others are actually participating. Imo, it's better to just ignore the people who say "x is the best" or "x is better than y" or "anyone who uses x is retarded" with no nuance. Let them go about their simple minded arguing and/or trolling, because it's inevitable in any public forum.

I found that doesnt help with the client. Especially since I used a pfsense server that only wants to spit out keys and shit in approved forms that dont seem to help on linux.

Abount to yank the pfsense version and just ause a freenas jail for openvpn.

I HATE Debian Stable. I try to watch a movie with mpv in full screen, X crashes. That's right, X CRASHES in a stable distro. I try to watch a movie in mpv with an srt file, now all of a sudden there's no sound in mpv at all. It sucks, the point of a stable distro was to NOT have to deal with this shit. I didn't have problems like this in Arch. Fuck all of you and your lies.

Bought a "broken" 13" mid-2012 Macbook Pro from a buddy for 200 bucks, turns out the only thing that was wrong was the hard drive cable (which took all of 2 minutes to replace). Threw a 500gb SSD in there instead of the shitty old HDD it had. After using macOS sierra for an hour (it fucking sucks), I switched it over to Ubuntu GNOME and haven't looked back since. Hey guys, spent the afternoon setting up a Linux Mint 18 partition on my hard drive and I'm quite happy with it but is there a way to stop my Windows partition from appearing in the Mint file browser, preferably that doesn't involve erasing any partitions?

If it matters I have 3 partitions, one for Windows 10, one for music and documents that i'd wanna access on both operating systems, and one for Mint. Optimally I want only the music/documents partition to appear on both operating systems, as having full access to Windows files just by setting up a Linux partition spooks me.

Does anyone here use OpenWrt? I flashed Lede on a D-Link DIR601B1 but it doesn't work so I want to revert to the Barrier Breaker release of OpenWrt and the only way I can connect is via serial. I'm looking at this guide to flashing via serial but I don't understand which values I am supposed to enter here.

"erase 0xbf020000 +7c0000 # 7c0000: size of the firmware (be aware that you may have a different size thus bricking your router)
loadb 0x81000000"

I understand that one of them is the size of the firmware and that the others seem to be locations on the flash drive(?) but where and how do I get that information?

I'm currently installing Gentoo on my desktop to flee from the clutches of Microsoft.
I'm in the middle of changing the USE flags in make.conf.
In that regard, I have some questions (which can hopefully be answered).
Are there USE flags that are only for legacy reasons there? Like 3dfx for example. Is there a list of those?
My second question resolves around use.desc.
If I install a software that enables a global USE flag, will it be appended automatically or will it not show up? Or are there already all global USE flags included, despite not having installed every software? I can't really imagine the latter since one can also get ebuilds and those can make new global USE flags, can't they?
And my last question is, is it good or bad practice to allow only a few USE, disallow the complete rest and just enable them in the package.use dir/file?
I mean, I'm aware that this is a lot of work especially when being in the middle of installation.
