How can I improve performance in VirtualBox? I set it to use 2 cores, 4096 MB of RAM and yet everything I run performs like shit. What do?
>VirtualBox
Install Gentoo

If the guest OS supports Guest Additions, install them.
Install VMware.
what cpu do you have? Virtualbox will use paravirtualization features if your cpu supports it

what to use?
If you run Ubuntu as a guest, try Debian instead - it is much smoother for me than Ubuntu.

Or simply don't use Unity. Mate, LXDE, XFCE would perform better on a VM.
enable virtualization in BIOS if you forgot to
make sure that your boot and virtual disk modes match the guest OS
install guest additions

t. Dell
>>57139283
Hardware Acceleration only works for Windows guest OS. So if you are using a graphic heavy UI, like say Unity on a linux guest it will run like poop. But would need more details to know what your issues is as that is more than enough for most things people would shove in VM.

Got a machine with decent virtualisation features and enabled them all?
Do yourself a favour and don't use virtualbox. Even KVM is better.
>>57139283
Performs badly doing what?
Profile it. Figure out where the problem is, them address it.

With VMware Player (which is completely free and superior to VirtualBox in almost every respect) or Workstation, hardware acceleration works for every guest OS except OSX/macOS.

>Virtualbox
Was fine with it until some update ago they decided to fuck with my wm.
If you're running a GUI then you're better off using VMWARE Player ( free for non-commercial use).

>uses heebtel hardware
>bitches about crappy performance
determine if your disk caching policy in the VM and the host are appropriate for your workload and storage medium.
using shit ssds is a perf killer.
>>57142322
(had this problem on a bunch of developer machines at work using kingston ssds)
>>57140039
>>57140086
also these, I've found that some modern motherboards come with vt-x disabled for whatever insane reason.
>>57139283
>Best performance: VMWare (proprietary)
>Really good performance: QEmu+kvm (open source)
>Meh: VirtualBox.
>>57139283
Use VMware instead.
Runs much, much better than ShitBox.

>heebtel
>forcing it that hard
>>57141446
>>57141494
Can I get a link to the free version?
What's the best way to pirate VMware Workstation? Player is fucking shit.
>>57143384
Grab a key, block everything on your firewall if your paranoid about it phoning home.
>>57143384
It's the same fucking software, you moron.
>>57143384
Just google "vmware workstation keys", the ones in the first result work.
