This is how I have done it before.

Step 1
Purchase application from Google Play

Step 2
Download File Expert from Google Play (It's free)

Step 3
Backup the purchased application .apk with the app I just told you about

Step 4
Refund the purchased application

Step 5
Install application from the .apk you saved

I get them from the pirate bay and test the in an Android VM using Genymotion (www.genymotion.com). I also have MultiROM and I can test apps in a different ROM. Be sure to encrypt the internal (main) ROM and test on the secondary one so that any potential malware can't access your personal files. My phone is only 16GB so the MultiROM thing isn't really working for me. That's why I use genymotion.
