Need some advice on limiting the size of Windows on a SSD as much as possible.

I have the basics down: All of my programs/files/downloads are going onto a 2tb HDD. But how do I keep other folders from filling up? Folders such as the Windows folder or appdata? Is it possible to have these things on the HDD such that the only time my OS increases in space is when I update or something similar?

Reposting my question because old thread reached bump limit

When you load a program into RAM, does it stay in one single block or is it possible for it to split ? (for example stack at 0x10000, heap at 0x89000, with other processes and blank space not owned by the program in between)

I'm pretty sure virtual memory sees it as one block, but how is it actually put in the physical memory ?

Appdata is a folder tied to your User folder, and I don't see a way to configure it so your User folders go to a different place, like My Documents has. So no idea.

Doubt that you can relocate the Windows folder either.

I always come across these types of files when downloading, and I'm just wondering what is going on here?

I know it's flac and I know its a good transcode, because there's no shelf at ~16000Hz like an mp3 file (and the file is from wcd), but I always wondered why do the frequencies just cut off near the top? Is it a problem with the file itself or the original recording process/mastering?

Curious because like 10% of my flac library does this

Relocate user profiles to the other disk. Appdata will come with.

You can't do a whole lot about the Windows folder itself, apart from run Disk Cleanup as admin now and then. The "Windows Update cleanup" checkbox in it will get rid of old versions of files that updates replaced. You lose the ability to uninstall the updates in question though. Windows normally runs this periodically anyway. Still you'll find WinSxS grows over time anyway.

>>57133048
Better to start with basics.

>>57133079
Switch off, unplug, ground yourself, and don't open the PSU itself. Waiting should not be needed. It's also possible that it was just that PSU's time, and it would have died pretty soon anyway -- actually that's pretty likely if it was a cheapass PSU; you're lucky it didn't take the PC down with it.

>>57133157
It stays in basically a single block in its own address space. An exe or DLL is divided into sections, each of which is loaded into a separate block of memory, one directly following another, with slightly more space in between than there is in the exe file itself. Almost every 32 bit Windows program loads at 0x00400000; 64-bit ones have another standard address. Pic related: the address space of a simple hello world program compiled with MinGW32 GCC.

The CPU then has a separate mapping of address space to physical memory for each process. Everything may or may not be in a single contiguous block of physical RAM. Each 4 KB page can be in a different place, and can be evicted to swap independently.
>>
>>57133561

I'm trying to use Facebook's Messenger in 64-bit Chrome and for some reason recently it started wobbling around at extremely high speeds. The main chat section just keeps bouncing up and down really fast, making it difficult to use. Any idea how to fix it? I googled it but it didn't seem like many other people have experienced this problem.
>>
>>57133445

There's literally no problem. If the file has a sample rate of 44 or 48KHz then it's impossible for it to even contain frequencies above 22 or 24Khz, and noone sane uses sample rates higher than that unless they're doing something other than creating audio for people to listen to.

I got this 8GB Starbucks flashdrive for free.

when I connect it, it acts like if I connected 2 drives, a flash drive AND a CD, the CD is like 60MB and is read only, and it contains an autorun.inf, browsercall.exe, and some .mov video about giving food to the poor.

I'm not on windows but I guess once I connect it to a windows machine, it will run that video automatically

I want to format the flashdrive completely but I can't find a way because it only formats the flashdrive, not the fake CD drive.

Is there a way to remove that thing?
>>
>>57133570
Guess you're either new or dumb.

You can keylog easily with with simple coding. You can store that keylog data on text file and send that file over on the same program.

Its very much possible. How to fix this? Install a firewall and only allow programs you manually use. If it tries to send anything, your firewall will pick up and you will see which program does that. If he's not bluffing, then find out where the file is and delete it.

Most likely just a skiddie who likes to fool.

And for the second part, a higher bit depth makes for a more accurate reproduction, sort of like vertical samples compared to horizontal samples for sample rate.

>>
>>57133445
CDs are sampled at 44.1kHz, so any audio content above 22.05kHz would cause aliasing, so a low pass filter is used to cut off everything (that's inaudible anyway) above ~21kHz.
>>
>>57132944
Does it make more sense to buy a bunch of Raspberry Pis for some simple servers for stuff like syslog and a domain controller (on a small network) or use the money to make a few VMs on slightly better hardware? I've already got a networked server for storage, so not really worried about writing syslog entries etc to flash - as I know that would not work so great for very long.

>>
>>57133671

If it's just partitions, you can just dd /dev/zero onto it then create a new table.

>>
>>57132987
You can use ntfs hardlinks for appdata, never used them myself but they sound useful for this. The programs and everything would work just like before and even think they're on the ssd. I think it's better to leave the Windows folder as it is.
>>
>>57133694
If done properly, the end effect of the accuracy is higher dynamic range, but since 16bit gives you 96dB without any signal processing trickery anyway, it's not really necessary to go higher outside of recording use, where it is handy as it gives more room to fiddle with levels in editing with less noise.
>>
>>57133445
>>57133561
Not just that but you start to lose them as you approach the nyquist frequency. That's half the sampling rate -- for 44.1 kHz "CD quality" audio, that's 22.05 kHz.

That's the highest frequency that can be represented at all. As for why, consider how it would look. You have one sample up, the next down, the next up, etc. It takes 2 samples to make one full waveform at 22,050 Hz. You can't make a wave with less than 2 samples, so 22,050 is the max.

Now, in real recordings, these samples come from sampling the waveform every 1/44100 of a second. If you have a wave coming in that's close to 22050 Hz but not exactly, over time your samples will hit different points on the wave. The result is aliasing -- that frequency plays inaccurately, as a 22050 Hz sound that goes in and out instead of the constant 22000 Hz sound that was originally there.

Another observation is if you have a 22050 Hz sound recorded in a 44100 Hz file, you can't distinguish whether that was a square wave, sawtooth wave, sine, etc. You just have one sample up and one sample down. Any of the above would make the same recording.

>>57133628
See above. 192 kHz recordings can accurately represent frequencies around the top of human hearing, and can distinguish different shapes of wave there. They lose accuracy at a much higher frequency we can't hear.

24 bit just provides more vertical accuracy in your waveform. Generally useless for listening since 65536 positions the speaker diaphragm can be at is quite enough. However if you're editing, have recorded a quiet sound and want to amplify it, the extra accuracy means you won't have reduced accuracy in your output.

>>57133755
then why didnt you just say you wanted something durable in the first post?

there are USB thumb drives like that
>>
>>57133694
makes sense, but I'm guessing this difference is very hard to hear unless you have some crazy gear.

Final part, I have a lot of 24/96 and 24/192 music that I want to convert to 44.1/48KHz, is it worth keeping it at 24-bit or should I just go for the standard 16-bit? Filesize doesn't change by too much if I use 24-bit

>>57133770
With proper sampling 22000Hz sine will come out as a proper 22000Hz sine, it doesn't get snapped to 22050. A square will be distorted since it has higher frequency components, but you'll still get the 22000Hz component, i.e. a sine wave back perfectly.

So long as you're sampling at or above the highest frequency in your input signal, the shape can be reproduced perfectly, you don't need to go all the way to 192kHz to reproduce up to 22kHz audio, 44.1 is sufficient, although a little higher can make the analogue processes simpler.

Yes it is. Windows tries to leave FAT filesystems in a consistent state whenever it finishes a transaction, but you have two other factors: There's no indicator on most USB sticks whether any activity is going on. And the flash controller inside it might go on doing some maintenance for a moment after the copy dialog box disappears.

My sister lost a whole USB stick's worth of data from not safe removing a little while ago.

>>
>>57134269
If you have a device that needs to perform some cleanup sometimes after a write, and don't have an activity light on it, bad things will sometimes happen if you suddenly disconnect power while it's working.

Phones connect in a few different ways. Some connect as a normal USB drive, in which case they're presenting the whole SD card to the computer as a block device. You would lose data if you yanked it while Windows is writing. However, the SD card remains powered and the phone takes it back after you yank, so at least if the card itself is doing maintenance, it won't be interrupted.

Other ways phones connect like MTP don't even give the PC a block device to use. It just transfers files one at a time, sort of like FTP.

Absolutely. It will likely work to copy the files off and run the installer. After it's installed, google for a no-CD crack for the version you have, and replace the game exe with that exe. What that does is bypass the shitty old DRM that checked for specific bad sectors or whatever on the CD to validate that it's an original.

Question,

I work as a software developer. One day, I needed an add-in to some software that could open files within that software and then save them somewhere else in bulk. (Each new version of this software has changes to the file type).

I found software that actually did what I needed and then some on an online marketplace. However, it was being sold for $100 USD. With no desire to pay that much, especially because my need was so simple, I just opted to write my own add-in real quick to do what I needed and I did.

I've been thinking about uploading what I made to GitHub for other people to be able to use, because I know I'm not the only one, and it would essentially be a simpler version of the software the person in the marketplace had for sell.

Would this get me in any trouble of any kind doing this? At no point had I ever seen the marketplace software source code or anything. I saw a function, told myself I could write it and did.

Thanks!

My old laptop had 8gb ram, a gt970 and i7 processor (this is off the top of my head) with a 1tb HDD. Large programs took a minute or two to compile but otherwise it did the trick.

Reason I'm switching is because my HDD took a shit already this year and I'd rather play it safe. My laptop is also coming up on 2 years old.

What's a cheap yet effective build similar to my old laptop? SSD is a must. I've tried searching but am unsure.

It seems to me that your best bet would be just to buy an SSD and replace the drive that failed in your previous laptop.

Spec wise, your previous laptop should be more than enough, save maybe upgrading your RAM to 16GB, but that's optional imo. You said your previously laptop had an HDD? That was probably what made those large programs take some time to compile.

What form of addons? You typically find addons and updates for older games at fan sites.

>How can I apply the updates before replacing the exe if I need to replace the exe to run it on a discless laptop?
Do you do the updates from inside the game? If so, apply the one for the unupdated exe and see if it will go through with the update. Hopefully you'll just end up with and updated game that refuses to run without the disc. Then you can apply the No-CD crack for that version.

Otherwise, install on a machine with a CD drive, update, apply the no-CD, and copy the game folder out of there. Install on your laptop and don't update or crack. You're mainly just getting all the registry crap in. Now replace the game folder with the updated one from the other machine. You might also need to peruse the registry and see if anything in the game's keys (HKLM\Software\..., HKCU\Software\...) reference the version.

I've even copied Locomotion (another game from the same dev) from PC to PC with no CD. I just exported all registry keys I could find that are associated with it, combined them into one .reg file, and edited the install path in keys that reference it as needed. Then I can just unzip the game wherever, edit the .reg, and merge it to install the game.

PCSX2 as mentioned by the other guy.

Or you can see if your monitor has composite or component inputs. If it does, get the correct cable for the PS2 and connect it up. You won't be able to record video of you playing games, but it'll work just like playing on a TV. Note that the PS2 needed a bit of setting fiddling to make component work right.

Alternately, get a video capture device with a composite input. Use the software for it to watch the input and play your games. You can use this to capture video as well since it's going through your PC, unlike the monitor input way. Note that not all video capture devices are made equal. Some introduce some lag. I have this one and it works great, no input lag:
https://www.amazon.com/Kworld-Video-Capture-Tuners-USB2800D/dp/B000234SMQ
I haven't tried their software, I just installed the basic driver and use generic programs with it.

The one catch is mine came with the left and right audio inputs wired backwards, so I have to plug the red cable into the white plug and vise versa. Or I can just ignore the audio input and connect it to my sound card using a regular RCA-to-3.5mm adapter since that's all the device is for audio. It doesn't capture audio using the USB device, so all the USB2 bandwidth can be used for video.

It depends on your use case. For certain things like multithreaded video transcoding, etc, a $135 AMD FX 8320 will beat any mid-range Intel cpu costing twice as much. For single threaded use, an Intel is easily better. So it comes down to whether your os/application uses all 8 cores or not.

you're half right. you get most bang for your buck with a 4 core i5, BUT, the extra threads on the i7 can help stabilize your FPS which will give you less drops in performance and result in a smoother experience and let you play on slightly higher settings overall.

personally i would wait until legit real life AMD Zen benchmarks are out (rumour release Q1 next year), and your CPU should be decent enough to last you until then.
Also Intel is planning on releasing Kaby Lake about then.

If you really want to buy something now there is nothing wrong with buying since the expected performance boost with kaby lake is only a couple % and will probably be mostly more efficient power consumption and less heating.
>>
>>57137202
Awesome, thanks. I'm thinking I'll compare some benchmarks and debate between getting top performance this round, or the i5 bang for the buck, and then probably wait for Zen unless there's a good sale before then.

PCSX2 works, but it's not 100% accurate on all games, so if I was you I'd get a composite to VGA adapter, or whatever fits your monitor needs. That would require you to buy one tho, so yeah if you don't wanna spend money and time, get PCSX2 and check the game compatibility list see if it supports the games you wanna play

My laptops get clogged with lint. It's from the bed maybe. It gets on one side of the copper lattice that the fan blows on. Try to get to it without "unscrewing" the heat sink from the processor. Or else you have to replace the thermal paste.

Its a I7 on a laptop 70°C should be expected.

Try to clean the HSF and repaste it with some good quality paste.

Ya think? Try not running the laptop on a dusty surface like a bed. At least put a board between the two to allow proper cooling without vacuuming the dust out of the bed.

dumb overclocking question, I'm overclocking my 4690k to 4.5ghz, with core voltage at 1.225, I've run stress tests on it for +10 minutes and played things like battlefield1 on it for at least an hour and it works fine and temps stay below 75c. But for some reason when I first turn on my pc, after about 3-10 minutes it'll just shut down saying the overclock is unstable, I can change nothing and turn just skip through bios and save the settings and after that it'll stay on fine with no high temps or anything.

The thing I don't understand is if I had an unstable overclock it should bluescreen or shutdown during the stress test or while playing something, except everything runs fine. If I turn on my pc, restart it, then it also does not shut down, so I'm really confused why it only happens when I initially turn it on after it has been off for a while.

hijack a facebook page with a couple thousand likes, make it look like a radio station, inbox them telling them they've won a contest and you need their email - You should always keep a page with a few thousand likes people trust them for some reason

Are you listening to it, or are you sampling it?

Properly mastered CD quality maxes out human hearing capability, but maybe you want to massively pitch down samples for a baseline. In that case ultrasonic content might become audible (note that in practice there rarely is much ultrasonic content in 96kHz/192kHz music).

So, one time he doxed me and posted it on one of the forums he and I we're a part of. He and I we're actually friends but ever since he learned how to "hack" he's been fucking obsessed with it and one time fucking doxed me to the school forum revealing my shit and including my phone number and which resulted to constant harassment and again resulted to me switching my sim card and changing my e-mail just to stop the harassment.

I know two wrongs don't make a right but I just want to deactivate his account for a couple of weeks and then reactivate it for him to feel my presence.

if you're desperate you could just ask all of his close friends if they'd sell you his address for £50, then just get him swatted - if he posted your dox they'd find something on his PC they could charge him with
>>
>>57139761
Well he only doxxed me cause he already knew my shit to begin with cause you know we we're friends to begin with. I gave him my phone number and my I used my old e-mail address to create a Facebook account which he knew because he was the one who invited me to create a Facebook in the first place. I made mine in his place. So he knew to begin with.

Looks like GPU artifacting. Does it happen in multiple games?
If no, verify the game cache and/or reinstall.
If yes, update drivers. If that doesn't work, use MSI afterburner to underclock your card and see if that helps. Otherwise you just have to deal with it until it dies, which may be soon.

I'm taking a look at RFC-2812, and I'm not sure what I'm looking at here. From page 8:
  key        =  1*23( %x01-05 / %x07-08 / %x0C / %x0E-1F / %x21-7F )
; any 7-bit US_ASCII character,
; except NUL, CR, LF, FF, h/v TABs, and " "

But the excluded hex characters here are NUL, ACK, HT, LF, VT, CR, and SP.
So ACK is excluded, and FF is included. I am not sure where the mistake is; is it in the comment, or the Augmented BNF expression? I.e., should it read
  key        =  1*23( %x01-05 / %x07-08 / %x0C / %x0E-1F / %x21-7F )
; any 7-bit US_ASCII character,
; except NUL, CR, LF, ACK, h/v TABs, and " "

or
  key        =  1*23( %x01-08 / %x0E-1F / %x21-7F )
; any 7-bit US_ASCII character,
; except NUL, CR, LF, FF, h/v TABs, and " "
