What kind of laptop would you recommend that is both cheap and effective (like a Subaru), if I were interested in learning to program. Also, what version of Linux is best? Sorry if these types of threads are annoying.

Why do you greentext the Thinkpad and Gentoo? Are they memes? Should I disregard someone who advises I get those?

1. This question should have been asked in either /sqt/ or /flt/, not had it's own thread.
2. He's greentexting thinkpad and gentoo because they are in fact memes, but they are not memes because they are bad. Thinkpads fulfill a certain niche that the average consumer most likely is not interested in, but they are quality products. Gentoo is also arguably the best linux distro, but is extremely difficult to install.
As for your initial question, the laptop doesn't really matter. Since the main use of this laptop is going to be programming you should buy something with a nice keyboard. Dell latitudes and thinkpads have some of the best laptop keyboards.
As for what linux version is the best, this depends highly on what you want. It sounds to me like you are a tech illiterate babby, so I would recommend mint for you. Arch, Gentoo, and Debian are good choices otherwise.
