Torrents are sustainable because the ecosystem relies on people contributing back rather than centralized bandwidth certain people have to maintain.

DDL, XDCC, FTP, Usenet & Co always have this problem, since they either have to collect money to survive or die due to a lack of funds. In some cases very generous people keep them running at solid speeds though.
