Hi, VLC should play mkv files correctly, first check if you have the ubuntu restricted extras installed which contains a lot of codecs. If VLC is not good for you and you need a full gui like MPC-HC i reccommend smplayer with MPV as backend. Go to the preferences windows, in the 'performance' tab set the hardware decoding form 'none' to 'auto' and you should be fine.

Problem is that the dev ran into some financial difficulties and is now proably sleeping in the street, so the project is dead and doesn't even compile.
