1. It's a gigantic piece of shit that only absolutely incompetent mouth-breathing morons use

2. It's better than those incompetent mouth-breathing morons trying to use their own engine

At least unity games sort of run on my end, after years of hacks and work-arounds and bug reports.

There is an awesome free shooter called Ravenfield with builds for Windows Mac and Linux. I don't like propietary anything but I must say Ravenfield is awesome and it's built with Unity.

Unity5 is actually pretty good

t. Steam gamedev and Unity4 game owner
>>
I used to use it a lot. It was nice and definitely way faster than using a graphics library and building my own engine. It felt like it was taking a toll on my programming skills though. I ditched it and now I work with directx and make my own engines. I can't compete with folks using unity but I definitely feel like I'm learning a whole lot more and it's way more intriguing to me. If you only want to make games then it's good. If you wanna learn how to program on a deeper level and really know your stuff I'd stay away.

I recently did a gamejam and folks using gamemaker and unity got way farther then I did. Then again, I saw folk that used those same tools say things like how they wished they actually knew how to program.

Unity is nice but if you're serious about programming I'd say it's a bit of a crutch.

It's a bad choice for teaching grade schoolers.

I don't have many complains about it for professional use since I've only taught it to children.
But seeing that indie game devs are using it I'd say it's better than the alternatives for small games.
>>
>>57115585
Great for rapid prototyping.

But bloated like a gassy, menstruating woman.

It's shit. Unreal engine is not only free but also better.
Unity is literally on game maker tier, except 3D. There are many better and free alternatives.

except UE, name one. And UE takes royalty
>>
>>57115585
I've been using it extensively for about a year. The issues people have with either stem from one of two things: they don't know what the engine is for, or cherry-picking shitty games made by shitty devs.

The majority of indie devs are making small scale """""8-bit""""" platformers. Unity has tons of extra features that they will never make use of, so they say that it's bloated.

The cherry picking is just cherrypicking.
>>
Youre better off using open source libraries to build an engine than using unity since you posted on /g. However if you want validation of your purchase post on /v.

Godot (god tier), GDevelop, libGDX, and a few others. Take your pick, most of these are FOSS. Unity doesn't even support 2D properly, everything is rendered in 3D which makes their "2D" games much less optimized when compared to other engines.
>>
>>57116806
If youre using a premade 2d engine and not a framework or libaries than you shouldnt even be making games.

fuuck

It doesn't like my jdk path. /usr/lib/jvm/ has all my javas in it, but Unity doesn't accept any of them as a valid jdk path.

please respond
>>
All these unemployed nodevs lmfao.

I use Unity at work every day, have been for the last year. It's great and developing using it or unreal is infinitely faster than building your own engine.

It's general purpose, so yes it has its drawbacks like any other engine. I'd like to have the source code, but hey whatever. The only performance problems I've ran into with it have been around garbage collection, which is a huge negative but not really a fault of the engine itself. If you're not retarded you can deal with it and get amazing performance and great looking games with it.

Phones home when anyone runs any Unity-based program (to the makers of the Unity engine) and neither the developer of the program nor the user can disable this.

Anyone using that shit is dumb. There should be a warning on every game on Steam that uses this shit engine that they will be using a shit privacy-invading garbage engine.

>light
>no installation needed
>uses a simple scripting language, good if you know python
>FOSS, free as in beer and freedom
>easy to learn, takes an hour to get familiar with if you're a first time dev (although it has a "less friendly" interface than game maker, where separate resources are in separate folders)
>actually very simple to use
>lots of stuff built-in
>2D and 3D support
It has a few minor issues of it's own, but it's arguably the best thing out there. It's much better than other meme-tier ones like GameMaker, and I'd rate it better than Unity because it's completely free and very light.
The only thing bad about Godot is marketing, it's a free piece of software and as such doesn't have the resources for advertisements or making it popular, so you won't find as many tutorials for it as you would for GameMaker, Unreal, Unity, or that many developers using it. And unlike Unreal, it doesn't have a whole professional and popular company behind it with millions of fans, some of which actively contribute to it because they loved Unreal tournament so much. If someone made a game in Godot and it became viral I'm sure lots of new people would try it out.
It's definitely great for indie developers, which I assume people here are trying to be. When you are one, you'd usually try to cut expenses as much as possible and Godot is a good choice for that.
