Who /dumbphone/ here?

I want pic related but can't bring myself to spend $300 on it. is there any alternatives that aren't shitty throwaway phones w/horrible interfaces?

Experiences with dumb phones? has it changed your life at all vs using a smartphone?

>>
>>57114367
I wanna get a dumbphone to play java gayms on. I just don't enjoy touch based games, they are all the same. I'm thinking about getting a Sony Ericsson C510, I had one before and it was nearly perfect. Ran pretty much anything I threw at it and didn't lag like my sister's Hazel which ran like shit all the time, lagged like hell even after disabling all the flash animations, and fell apart after a year due to it being a slide phone.

Anyone feels like chiming in?

>only non shit choice is some overpriced hipster pandering company
This is how you know you're a neo luddite. Dumbphone cucks are the worst hipsters.
>>
If you want a decent dumbphone then buy old shit like Sony Ericsson or Nokia phones. Modern dumbphones have way less functionality
>>
>>57114565
>I just don't enjoy touch based games, they are all the same.
You know emulators exist, right? And bluetooth controllers?
>>
>>57114704
Now that anon but
>having to buy peripherals for a better experience
>>
God, i already see the next cuckstarter with "dumb" phone with simple, elegant features like "communicating with your friends", ideal for "business", longlasting battery (2.5 week obv), all packed in some fancy monochrome or tritone color desing like op pic
>>
>>57114605
>10 years battery life
>fully waterproof
>>
>>57114690
but isn't less functionality what you want? If you wanted more functionality you'd get a smartphone. It's simpler to just admit you're the new old people. You made fun of grandma because she wouldn't let go of typewriters and now you can't let go of whatever happened to be available at the time. Same shit different decade.

just a reminder that dumb phones have been 16 years on the market.
>>
I have a Samsung S5610

I used to have some shitty ZTE phone but I got tired of having to charge the battery every single day.
>>
>>57114715
Yet you do that for your PC for emulators? That'd be like saying you have to stick with the keyboard because it's what came in the box. The reason why BT controller is better is because its detachable. Everything else gives you no choice and you have to lug around that shit in one pocket. BT controller is detachable. You have choice.
>>
>>57114690
Heed these words anon.

I've picked up a Sony Ericson W995 recently for 10 eurodollars because I wanted a phone that I could take with me to festivals, concerts, running, etc. and not have to worry about losing or breaking

It is better than I thought it would be. Dedicated controls for music are great when running and because it is old I can leave it in my tent at festivals and nobody will bother stealing it.

Sometimes I want to kill myself for breaking that screen.
>>
>>57114715
Sure, why not? I'm all about efficiency. I bought an extended battery for my phone and now it lasts 4-5 days of normal use. What I don't buy is unnecessary devices. I don't need a satnav, my phone can do it. I don't need a music player, my phone can do it. I don't need a portable console, my phone can do it.
>>
>>57114841

OP here, thinking about getting pic related because it's pretty cheap.

Is GSM 2g getting phased out a concern for the older phones? even the punkt phone uses it. I know t-mobile is continuing support for 2g but I already have at&t and would rather not switch.

Honestly what I really want is something with punkt build quality, a good camera, essential functions and not much else, probably doesn't exist.

Any phones that I can use for uber? that's one of the only problems of using a dumb phone for me.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my best to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

no dude it was awesome. See that scroll wheel on the left? It can go in 5 directions! You could use it to navigate the menus, click, open contextual menus and to go back. It's nuts how handy it was.

Anyway OP, i used to love dumb phones. I switched to smartphones mainly because of whatsapp & internet. Also having a somewhat decent camera on you at all times can prove useful. (the p900 had a super shitty 640x480 res for pics, iirc)

I've got an old 3310 in a kitchen drawer. I miss using that phone. It was great. Fit in my pocket and no worries. Too bad I need a smartphone to use CC apps for work. I've got more customers texting these days too.

I knew as soon as everyone started buying pagers that we'd all end up enslaved to these damn things. Now I pay $680 for an effing phone.

Redirect them to email. I quit the smartphone meme after making lead. Too many fucking trivial text questions at all hours of the day and night. If it's damn important, I want a call. If it can wait, it deserves to be an email. SMS is fucking cancer.

Now everyone knows I check mail on the clock and that's it. I still get dragged around by the balls occasionally because the team calls me for no good reason but by in large the quality of life improvement is huge.

It's actually hard to appreciate just how much better life is without the fucking pocket computer phone going 24/7 until you're without it for a solid month. First you get withdraw, then you get worried, then finally you get over the bullshit and remember what freedom was like.

What "standard" do you want? One of the dumbphone memes is durability and with cases like this that are less than $20 you can have up to an entire ton of weight pressed on it. It's detachable so you can remove it after the job is done so you aren't always stuck with one thing. The other meme is battery life and they have stock android phones with 10000 mah batteries now since the motherboards keep shrinking.

>>57124244
The hilarious bit is that there are some amish outside of major cities that use smartphones and facebook as long as its for business. This is actually a case of a luddite being better than a neo-luddite because in the later case all your special snowflakeism bought you was something worse. All your modern psuedo-movement-internet-ideas turn turtle and do more harm than good when you choose to buy a dumbphone for whatever made up hipster reason.

Here is how to fix your woes:
>form self control
>don't download gaemmmz
>realize that smartphones are a huge boon for IT, programming, web apps, and everything else and you're just being a contrarian.
>>
>>57124311
This really, this. I quit being a slave to the "smart," phone and within a few weeks I was literally feeling less stressed out.

I think it has something to do with how smartphones cause all the compartments of our lives to just run together into one big ball of social media hell. When you unplug from the smartphone, you all of a sudden have a "work life," and "home life," again. You have "friends," whom you actually communicate with, and "associates," whom you only ever see incidentally.

I'm not even a freetard. I have a Windows laptop as my daily driver and I could care less about muh botnet. Living smartphone free is just better living. It's that simple.

If you actually have ever used android you know you can actually turn off GPS at any time. What's so bad about having functionality that you don't happen to use every hour? It's waiting for when you hit the button. Assuming your meme about battery life were true then you can actually control when its on or off. Alternatively you can lug around 4 different devices.

you're supposed to like computers on /g/ but you are at the point where you're not wanting to have one in your pocket at all times. what would your child self say to turning down this nearly free opportunity?
>>
>>57124381
Or these forgotten bundles/folds of paper that we used to use as "maps" for people who can actually read and think and don't need a fucking computer to tell them turn by turn fucking directions.
>>
>>57124416
>realize that smartphones are a huge boon for IT, programming, web apps, and everything else
Marketing pls go. Smartphones are just another platform. They're not a boon for anything except ensuring constant access to email and the internet when you wouldn't otherwise be in the presence of another device, which is usually a time when you wouldn't want to be bothered: on the shitter, in the car, with your family on vacation, etc. And in all of those cases a dumbphone provides emergency contact for the case that you should gtfo back to your computer and get something done.

Nobody should be arguing the smartphone is going to go away, clearly that's not the case, but if you're arguing its an integral part of the development process you're clearly just fucking retarded. The only reason you would use a smartphone for development is to develop for a smartphone.
>>
>>57124425
>go to settings, uninstall apps
>uninstall facebook and social media
>get asked by other people for those when they see your smartphone
>"Sorry I don't do that stuff"
It's that easy. Or you can choose not to have self control and then just blame the platform. I've been using android since 2010 and have never once even thought about any form of social media.
>>
>>57124311
Wtf just out your phone on silent. Or turn messaging on silent. Or set quiet hours. You fuckers are luddites because the problems you described can be solved with some fucking tweaking. >>
>>57124453
>you're supposed to like computers on /g/ but you are at the point where you're not wanting to have one in your pocket at all times

>>
>>57124453
>nearly free
>$400 for a decent phone
>$insane per month to get fucking service
Are you stupid?

Also, I'll bet you money you would have never asked to have a tracking device implanted in you so the government knows where you are at all times. Yet you pay to have exactly that, and no, it's not GPS, it's cell triangulation that you CANNOT disable.

And even dumbphones have this. All mobile phones are garbage and anyone that has fallen for this fucking plot to monitor everyone on the planet is beyond retarded.
>>
>>57124477
Or you can just accept that the platform is largely frivolous and redundant for some users.

>just don't install a brushguard on your full-sized pickup
>or you can just blame the platform and buy a sedan or compact car
>but it's literally 2016 so you should always buy a pickup, luddite
>>
>>57124471
Yes because all of the links to new-deprecated $300 dumbphones that have $10 chinese alternatives isn't marketing.

As mentioned in this thread the only thing you can expect to have on a dumbphone is a shitty version of java, I'm sure it's only 2D on the software level and as if there was even enough power to do anything else. Imagine having a fully fledged java, every other language you want, instantly download apps, program in any language, have a proper touch screen to use internal company web apps, ability to dual boot linux distros, portable dosbox, and even supports VPN on the phone itself. Also supports the massive wealth of already existing apps on the play store which integrate with all sorts of PC apps. Except all of this already exists on 2010 era androids.
>>
>>57124523
Considering you can buy all the dumbphones mentioned used, either we're marketing for a hoard of ebay sellers or you just pulled off the worst possible deflection.

>dumbphones only have...
Yeah that's the point moron, we don't care. We actually accept the loss of a trivial amount of utility from a cheaper smartphone because we don't need it and the cost of owning a dumb phone is cheaper than any smartphone anyway.

I will never support or recommend buying brand new since the price will be cut by 70% after six months. You can get $800 phones from 2012 for $50 now. Also there's people in this thread unironically considering a $300 dumbphone with none of these features..

>service
Every major USA ISP has data as part of their plans now and you can't turn it off. Only place you can even get just talk and text is prepaid. You're probably paying for data you aren't even using.

>>
> 300 burger dollars on a dumbphone

>>
>>57124574
>Perfectly fine if you want to stay in the past but stop with the "im better than u" hipster mentality.
There's nothing "past," about laptops and desktops. They're still the devices we all do meaningful work and play on. Smartphones are literally the most trivial computing devices. And yes, the fact your memory is being eroded by having maps, media, and search at your finger tips all day does make me better than you.
>>
>>57124558
I would say I wish I had targeted this market myself but the reality is that the target userbase in question consists of special snowflakes. You can't target snowflakeism with a product because they will make up some new reason why it sucks. for example "any tech made after 2005 is botnet" while forgetting 2005 was the year they finally realized what this is and all that old stuff is just them retroactively living in the past and unable to admit that by those standards everything is "botnet"

The only way to do this would be to be like adpot-a-pets and include some certificate of ludditry for each phone sale and say "This phone was used by some incredibly old cool person that we just made up". all of the phones would have to have weathered appearances to not seem new. you could also probably get a lot of sales by having the majority of the commercial being about "kids today" and as a joke compare it to the same grandmas you'd see this sort of fuck ostracize for refusing to learn how to use a PC of any kind over a typewriter for the same luddite reason except that happened in the 80s and this is now. throw that in as a joke and see if anyone notices.
>>
Although I agree this expensive hipster dumbphone meme is completely hilarious, I think the reaction posts in here are potentially more sad and amusing. This is /g/, we regularly have niggers spend hundreds on gaming video cards, fancy computer cases, stupid home rack servers, chink novelty items, etc.

The only reason I can think people would react this much to dumbphone propaganda is that deep down they feel extremely insecure about their phone fetish.

This isn't really sad posts as much as common sense and you were left behind by choosing to be. Go post outside of /g/ and you'll find the same against you.

If you became a "faggot" to the letter of what you think "smartphone kids" are about, you can make a lot of money in android dev. $70K starting and there are senior positions. That's right, senior position of over $100K on an industry you have been passingly summing up as a fad for over 6 years. go try indeed if you don't believe me.

You may also be interested in GSM watches. These aren't smart watches, they are an entire phone on the watch itself and it has its own speaker or you could of course use BT. Some of them come with buttons so it looks like from a distance it's a calculator watch which society at large has already trained itself to stay away from anyone who has one. So it does the same job and is even more minimal. Also has a shitty small unusable screen just like you want and has no features so it's like a dumbphone wrapped around your wrist. $50~ on dx

I don't hang out with airheads so I don't have to deal with their shit. I didn't hang out with airheads before cell phones existed. I'm very good at chasing off the stupid so they don't annoy me.
>>
>>57124381
>Adding to that, there are these things on roads called "signs," which people seem to have forgotten about. Generally allows one to navigate vast distances with relative ease. Getting to a particular address can be trickier, but there again we have the ancient miracle of consecutive address numbers, another forgotten masterwork of human ingenuity.

I grew up long before cell phones existed. Land nav is an asspain and CONUS is too vast for good signage everywhere. Hard copy maps don't show police, traffic, road closures and weather data. My phone more than pays for itself in fuel saved. Address numbers are often hidden or not posted at all. OTOH I can pull up either maps or satellite views to find the precise location I want with little effort.

If the zombie apocalypse happens I still have a compass and maps, but see no reason to live that way while civilization still functions.

Hard copy maps are shit during disasters. I used Waze along with government road closure lists to bypass many obstacles during Joaquin and Matthew. That alone paid for my phone.

I realized the only thing I use my smart phone for that my old ones couldn't do is, wifi connection, and a newer internet browser. Possibly even something like whatsapp to talk/chat to my sister who is abroad since that could be easily replaced by emails.

A smartphone can be utilized wothout making yourself look like a hispter snob getting a dumbphone.

>Don't use facebook
>Don't bother with mobile gaming
>Don't use any social media (period)
>A non bias news application is ok
>Weather is also acceptable
>Use whatever messaging application provided it does not have any links to social media.
>Keep your "personal" life personal (aka don't post what you are doing at insignificant times)
>Only use productivity apps that complement your pc/laptop counterparts, emails, etc.
Doing all of this will make your smartphone more of a valuable tool and less of a distraction. Self control is also essential. Having no social life to even use a smartphone to its fullest potential also helps.
>>
>>57129140
no shit retard, no one has 100% self control. There's nothing wrong with changing your environment to influence your actions.

>Stop doing all this coke that's sitting in front of you, only take adderall occasionally to get things done, easy.
>>
>>57129247
>go to a market
>free samples
>eat the entire tray because it's there
>blame the product for getting fat
We've had dumbphone threads several times and it always comes back to not having self control, which you are attempting to push the blame onto the technology. If you use it to dick around online, that fault was your choice and not the technology. But you won't admit that and then we do this
>smartphones are bad because they're good
>I use a dumbphone because it eliminates a choice I can't make on my own because I am a child
>im better than u
>>
i think i still have my 6110 around somwhere

the little fucker would get so hot i could barely hold it.

ran like a dream from 2008-2010 when i got my first smartphone a Huawei pos.

Dunno why /g/ is talking about dumb phones, i guess their good if you love to break phones, get your shit stolen or travel
>>

wew thats so mid-late 2000's it hurts

Actually never got to use one of these but does look cool as fuck
>>
>>57129412
It's the same as retro threads, they use some piece of shit and say that makes them better than "normies" . they don't really give a fuck about technology, or phones, this is just special snowflakeism.
>>
>>57123637
rip motorola

damn they used to make some cool as fuck phones

same with the older nokias

Touchscreen ruins everything :(

B-but the razr was one of the first smartphones

i remmeber when these fuckers went from like 2004-2008 and everyone loved them

Pretty sure my dad had a razr 2 for years until it fried itself and replacing the battery didnt make a difference :(
>>57129447
i actually had to go back to a dumbphone when my htc 816 grenaded and my mums one did too same problem killed its battery (just wouldnt charge or turn on)

God some older 2008 tier LG fliphone for months and i hated it, it was only a loaner but so bad, cant remember what she got but it was way worse than my old nokia.

Going back to locked phones fucking sucked

That is unbelievable shitty. Why the fuck would anyone buy this? For $300 you could buy old nokia phones to last you a life time.

bad analogy, phones aren't free like walking into a market with free samples.

>buy a grocery bundle that contains essentials plus sweets and junk food for more money.
>buy a grocery bundle with bare bone essentials for less money.

Groceries obviously don't come in bundles but it would be great if we could pick and choose phone features like groceries.

Please point out where I blamed the technology. I'm totally aware that I lack some self control when it comes to media consumption on my phone. It hasn't become a major problem in my life but I don't like the habit. you also lack self control with something, if you say don't, you're lying. like I said before, there's nothing wrong with changing your environment to influence your actions, this is essentially deciding not to use something just like deleting an app.
>>
>>57129659

Thats the point you fucking idiot, those don't make the phone better. Its fucking buzz words made to fool idiots like you that have only used iphones to think that they are not ripped off.
>>
>>57129713
This. A smartphone is equal to the fat burger happy meals combo for months on end. You are sure to be well fed but you will develop sickness as a result and be worse in the long run. Doing the dumbphone break is like eating clean. You cut weight, feel better, and have to work for it at first, but it is well worth the effort.

One of the South Korean carrier switched over to pure LTE voice, and they needed to have a dumbphone model for special use customers and luddites.
