I checked numerous materials, like presentations and stuff and I could not find any.

You get away from the monstrous 8.1 interface.
You get the horrible 10 interface.

Like the double Control Panel.
Ram compression too, it's there, but on a server?
A few updates came down, it's also "CUMulative" now. Eww.

Mind you, this is a stock Server 2016.
WHICH AUTO RESTARTS AFTER AN UPDATE.

What the FUCK MS?!

Well, time to restart.
Then I will try to install Vmware Workstation.
> inb4 hyper-v
Hyper-V is comfy and good (to some degree), but only if you have dedicated IPs. The target machine has only one IP and I just NAT ports, poor man's method.
>>
>>57112330
By "any" I mean it's mostly geared towards this new IoT world, and getting ran inside containers, and running containers, that kind of stuff.

Basically they try to make it a minimalistic Linux server-like something something.

But if you pick the desktop edition, it's a Windows 10 with Server features. (well, just like how the 2012R2 was a 8.1 with server features.)
>>
>>57112319
Oh yeah, and the title bar / frame looks fucking neat. That's some fine feature right there!
>>
>>57112319
>RAM compression
>literally swap with higher CPU usage
>HDD is at least at 80 % usage

Why is this a feature?
>>
>>57112307
Why would anyone run a Windows server when free software LAMP stacks beat the shit out of all proprietary offerings?
>>
>>57112367
Fuck if I know. I read that it's only a desktop feature. And it arrived only as an update to 10, so I am really, really surprised it's in there.

>>57112373
Beats the shit out of me, again.
I mean, it's comfy for sure, the desktop edition.
But the Core - which is the "new and hip" thing, is like having to SSH into a Linux server.

I can only imagine running these if you have some Windows-only stack, but why would anyone do that? It's just weird.

Any requests? Machine is totally throwaway.

By the way it's quite nice.
It's Windows 10, with all the features and no botnet shit.

Like no meme Store, no "Web apps" and crap like that. It's how Windows 10 should have been. Except the two Control Panels maybe.

But yeah, it's pretty good.
So if you have MSDNAA (ImagineX, DreamSpark), you may want to check it out if you want a better 10.

If it's like previous versions of Server, it's hard to make it into a workstation OS because no Bluetooth stack.
>>
>>57112524
Oh, I never noticed that..
I used Server 2008R2 and 2012R2 for a long while on desktops. Even on laptop.

To be honest I had a bluetooth in my laptop since like 7 years, but never used it once. It's just useless.

For file transfer? It's slow.
For data connection? Slow.
For voice call? Samsung SideSync.

I don't know.
What do you use it for?

BUT THE UPDATES, FUCK.
There is no settings whatsoever.
It's ridiculous.

I don't want to mess in Group Policy on a SERVER unless absolutely needed.
As you can see it's the 10 Update window with NO changes.

Oh and there is a nice bug too.
If you install new stuff, you can't click the start menu entry until you reboot the machine.
Not kidding, it's even mentioned on Microsoft's website.

lol.
So now I can't click Vmware in the Start until I reboot.
Of course I can just open it by hand if I navigate there in Explorer, but ..wow.
This is a SERVER product. A really, really expensive one at that..
>>
>>57112600
>I have never seen a serious headset that used Bluetooth.
what's your definition of a "serious headset"?

>I mean you could just hook it up to the phone directly?
No because that's via Bluetooth also. "Decent" Bluetooth headsets are multi-device capable. In my case Desktop, Laptop (when mobile) and Smartphone.
Bluetooth stack 4.2 + AptX (Qualcomm) does the job perfectly - especially since the average human ear ranges only from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and most music is 384kbps AAC/MP3 anyway.

Norton's SecureDNS might also help.
uBlock in your browser is also a must.

I think that's it.

But not sure if that helps at all.
Like that is just about Feature Updates, security updates would still come and make the machine restart itself.

> Bluetooth stack 4.2 + AptX (Qualcomm) does the job perfectly
That requires a decent laptop / bt chip, and a fresh AND expensive headset.
But yeah it could work.

I am the lazy kind, I just buy like a better Audio-Technica, Sennheiser or some other wired headphone, since the laptop already has a stereo mic by default and it's perfect for Skype business calls and such.

Yeah but as a poor plebeian I can buy a license to run my software, or a purchased software, or whatever.
Or I _was_ able to do that.
>>
>>57112836
Well there is no VR standard either.
And no hardware to drive VR properly.
And no proper titles except cash grab 5 minute Unity ones.

So yeah. I wonder when will the "death of VR #2" will happen.
Then we can wait another 5-10 years until the industry tries to resurrect it again.

running services, virtualization, VPN, etc

Granted, then use Win 10 Pro, ant tweak the services (as I do), and use the Hyper-V in Win 10 Pro.
A decent "gamer paltop" like the ASUS Republic Of Gamer"-series has sufficient horsepower for that, can game, and has plenty of RAM capacity for virtualization (up to 32 or 64 GB ram)

>Is that the future? Just pay for Azure and don't buy servers?
unless you want to have it off the grid/internet (i.e. intranet only, or extremely filtered/controlled access via VPN) there's hardly any need for dedicated hardware on-site.

A machine that can drive a VR set is pretty costly.
Then there is the price of the headset.

So yeah, problems all around.
I think it just needs time, like at least the hardware needs to be affordable.

Sorry son, it's Remote Desktop (and no RemoteFX).

So it should work.

>>57112900
> use 10 Pro
Which also has shit updates? Which has no LTB capability?
And I am supposed to put a ROG "Gamer Paltop" into a server room?

What?
Whaaaaat?

A normal server (like the ones I have now) just run endlessly, for months, long years.
They sit on a gpbs link and provide all I need.

I think you miss a huge segment in the middle.
Like you see the r=1 dumb consumer side, then you hop a huge one and arrive at the "BIG ASS ENTERPRISE".

But 90% is between the two. Companies who run their services, universities and whatnot.
They do run their own servers. Hell, even Office 365 (big enterprise one) requires onsite servers.
Azure is a huge cashgrab. No small / mid business will ever be able to afford it.
>>
>>57112878
>But then again, I am a tech who makes a living off virus + spywarez rm ( ^:
been there, done that, from the 80's up to the 2000's. Things changed when Win7 came around. With each iteration after that (8.x, 8.1 and now 10) it's getting increasingly harder for windows to "catch shit".
On top of things, people are moving away from laptops and desktops. Tables and phablets are replacing the average "internet users" devices. Considering all they do is surf, email, watch porn, youtube and facebook.
Especially if a ChromeCast is attached to the living-room TV

You need to find a different venue before the well dries up - trust me, I've been there.
>>
>>57112918
>They sit on a gpbs link and provide all I need.
Like yes, there is redundancy, but it's so easy to set up a redundant/fail-over stack with replication.
And you don't need fancy equipment, or decades of training either, it takes a few days only and it will be functional for years to come.
>>
>>57112921
But you don't even need to write crap nowadays.
It's almost always social engineering with some known payload.
Then having a command server. If that's the purpose.

Otherwise, you code a crappy locker software and set up a BTC wallet or something.
There are no great viruses nowadays anymore.
>>
>>57112918
>Azure is a huge cashgrab. No small / mid business will ever be able to afford it.
indeed
that's why I get those on Google's Apps For Work (or G-works or what they call it now/soon)
minimal overhead, available everywhere and it just works for only 5 bucks/user/month.
does intranets, office, loads of storage, multi-device capable with minimal setup, and real-time multi-user collaboration.
>>
>>57112944
I was thinking about Dropbox Business, and if they introduce Infinite, I might do it.

Also GApps / Office 365 are collaboration tools.
The services I mentioned, those run on server.
For example our accounting uses Firebird service that runs on said servers, and is reached through VPN.

There is no other way, fuck SAP and the rest.
Their only job is to make overcomplicated tools that will make you lose even more money.
But indeed their marketing is nice, and what else you need for a CEO with money and no brain?
>>

I'dnt use Dropbox - not after they lost ~70 million passwords & co.
Google has never been hacked/breached nor lost any passwords. Google has a much bigger Infrastructure for it to stay sustained for the next decade or two even. I can't say that for Dropbox being only a cyberlocker.

is there a specific reason why firebird instead of mysql ?

about SAP, yeah, those are for the global 5000 only

>I'dnt use Dropbox - not after they lost ~70 million passwords & co.
They also have Condolezza on the Board, so yeah.
Red flags all over the place, I know.
But the deduplication and the much-advanced client is so comfy.
There is the file versioning too, even a simple user can do it.

On the contrary, the Google Sync client feels very clunky.
Honestly, I thought they will up their game after they released it, but it's kinda like stuck in that state ever since.

Onedrive Business is also similarly priced (Office 365 that gives you Office... now there is a sub that gives you Win10 as well.) The business sync client has file versioning support, but it's also kinda clunky.

Also group work is again, comfiest in Dropbox.
Sad how the best tools have the worst red flags on them...

Google is designed from the ground up to run (just about) everything in the cloud off thin clients (like chromebooks/chrometops) or just the web-browser, that's why the sync tool is 'clunky'.
Has the added feature that's a really hardened infrastructure. Unless you throw some state-sponsored malware-hacking machine at it, chromeOS/G-drive & company is a fortress and nearly impenetrable

I also grabbed a few dbs when I cracked a few things.

>>57113132
Well yeah, but you can't really do "real work" on a ChromeOS device.
I mean it's great for a big multinational company where workers mostly just use a browser, and chat maybe.
Hell, it's perfect for that.

But then again, in my line of work, for example, we have software for calculations, we work/print CAD, 3D files, there are software to pick out equipment and whatnot. Then there is Office that you use to make your quotation/proposal, whatever. So the whole idea of just a browser... yeah, it seems impossible.
>>
>>57113151

that's what you think, chief. Modern brute-force rents a Google or ECC cloud for a few hours and let some 100,000 VMs go to town on it.

Edu? If you have Edu license, you have DataCenter Server 2016, you have 10 Pro, everything.

That is not how it supposed to fucking work mate.

I am using a legitimate software, on a brand machine.
And I am required to write, deploy and use hacks to keep using it?
It's like I am using XP rearm tactics or some shit.
But I am not.

I just want a fuuucking OS.

Btw I would use Proxmox, it's pretty fucking nice, but only with dedicated IPs.
Setting up NAT + forward into guests there is a PAIN IN THE FUCKING ASS. (Not exaggerating.)
