No Reason to Upgrade General

Who else has no reason to "upgrade"?
>1024*768 screen
>1.8Ghz(x2) processor
>2GB of memory
>Hard drive with 19k hours overall uptime (newest part of the computer)

It can still run all the software I need it to at the same speed it always has, so why ask for more?
>>
what do you use it for?
>>
>>57111852

I'm glad for you.

Other people want to do more demanding tasks.

My laptop from several years ago is fine and will be fine for many years to come. I just wish it had a GPU capable of games and will likely build a desktop for this goal.
>>
>>57111874
Browsing the web, writing, watching videos, listening to music, playing games worth playing (read: DOSBox and emulators).

What a silly question to ask.

One 24" 1920x1200 Dell IPS

I could afford to upgrade or buy more monitors, but why? Having grown up with 14" CRTs taught me how to manage windows efficiently, and memorize things, so I don't need multiple monitors.

Not really.

Also, "related to computers" is a rather loose term. An internet blogger is a job related to computers, and they need jack shit. Same with a web "developer."

Technically this goes for everyon else tech related, at least the employed ones, if they are provided machines at work.

I usually find that I don't need to upgrade, but I do change my gear every some 5 years because I'd prefer the hardware to not fail on me at a random time.

My philosophy is that it makes no sense to use stuff that is older than what you could potentially get for free, unless the old stuff is significantly better for some reason. You can get complete, working computer with an athlon X2 @ 3GHz with 4GB of DDR2 for free. It makes no sense to use a computer older than this, unless you have a good reason for doing so.
>>
with the irrelevance of the WWW, there's less reason than ever to upgrade
>>
Understandable, don't fix what ain't broken ya know
I have a thinkpad 380ed with a 166mhz Pentium MMX, 48mb of ram, 1mb VRAM, 2.1gb HDD and an 800x600 screen
I use it for shitposting and programming
It works

But I also own a desktop with an i7 6700k, 32gb of ram, two rx 480 8gb cards in crossfire, nearly 18tb of storage and two 1440p monitors
Which I use for games and CAD

In a couple days I'll buy an Acer C110. It's a 10 inch netbook with tablet capabilities.

Centrino 1 GHz, 768 MB RAM. I'll install lubuntu on it. I'll use it for writing my thesis in LaTeX. I don't know how fast it will compile though. I manage my versioning with git so I'll be able to compile it on my T420 when I want to.

I plan this because I get very easily distracted and begin to browse the net and shitpost if I'm on a capable computer.

Built my current PC in 2013 and it has
AMD 3.3GHz 6-core
AMD Radeon HD 7770 1GB
8GB RAM
and I just got a 256 GB SSD

Before that I had a Toshiba Satellite laptop with
2.16GHz Intel Celeron 1-core
Intel HD graphics
2GB RAM
160GB 5400 RPM HDD

Laptop came with Vista, and I installed 7.
Installed 7 on the desktop, upgraded to 10, and am currently back on 7.

I'm going to build a new PC next year because I've been working hard and am almost at budget and I really want to play some games my current PC can't handle properly.

I don't know where I was going with this. I just felt like telling a cool story.

I've found plenty of them in the electronics waste at my uni. I've gathered plenty of stuff there. I've also been offered several old intel core duo computers for free, as well as hp retail keyboards and 17" monitors. Laptops are a whole other story though, people generally don't give them away since it doesn't cost anything to store them.

It would surprise you how modern the stuff is that people just throw away. If it can't be sold for more than €50 and it's expensive to ship it, people just toss it instead.

I went out of my way to get the Penryn motherboard, and I hand-soldered an LVDS cable adapter so I can use an IPS panel. I'm waiting for my i7-5600U motherboard to arrive from Shenzen so I can keep using the X61 for as long as possible.

Nothing comperes to it.

Win 7 is shit and every other new windows blows hard.

Its one stupid thing, you see on XP the file browser displays files in the order they are downloaded while in the new windows they are sorted alphabetically.

Download 50 files and try to look up the one you downloaded last on XP its a breeze while on every other file browser its shit somewhere inbetween other files sorted alphabetically.

What DE on Linux will give me this functionality?
Serious question BTW.

I never get why people update laptops. All I ever need them for is word processing, watching videos, listening to music and playing runescape. I bought a Thinkpad t61p for 60 dollars and I'll be good until the GPU inevitably shits out (I love the 1920x1200 and can't bring myself to buy a t60 to avoid the faulty gpu). Well I can remember upgrading laptops a few times and getting noticeably better RuneScape performance. RuneScape 2, that is, not the original. It was almost unplayable on my first laptop (ThinkPad 770z) with a Pentium II, but quite playable on my second and third laptop (T22 and T23) with a Pentium IIIs. Still, it could get sluggish when there were a lot of other players around, but that was basically solved when I got my T42 with Pentium M. Of course by then I wasn't into RuneScape quite as much and stopped playing entirely not too long after.

You really don't need something more powerful then a XP era computer to watch video and surf the web.

Unless the manufacturers decide to fuck you over, 4K video might get hard or 8K video.

Or better yet they release IPv8 overnight and everyone needs to use it exclusively + they go over to HTML666 exclusively there are no web browsers for your OS so you need a new OS however no modern OS will install on your hardware so you basically need a new machine.

As someone who uses uMatrix and blocks almost everything by default and has to individually unbreak every website one piece at a time, I know how much blocking things can help.

I also have a lot of experience with browsing the modern internet on very old computers. I was the one who posted above about using a Pentium II machine daily in 2012, and for a few years after that I used a Pentium III machine on a daily basis.

In my experience with that, I found that there were some websites that wouldn't work without allowing CPU-hogging scripts. More of an issue with that, though, I found that loading websites with many images or high resolution images was a more common struggle.

Oh wait that was actually a different thread, sorry.

But anyway I was daily driving a ThinkPad with a 366Mhz Pentium II and 288MB RAM in 2012. That was long before uBlock and uMatrix so it would've been Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript at the time. During my later Pentium III days I started experimenting with more advanced blocking with Policeman, but it wasn't until uMatrix came out that I really embraced selective loading of all things on every website.
>>
>>57113986
Now that is super nice. What panel do you use? What backlight do you have?
>>
>>57117134
Again, you judging things based on your usage.

That guy is really only running two IRC windows. If your thing with computers is IRC or some other text-based usage, why wouldn't you use a load of terminals? Also note the RAM amount on htop. This is clearly just making use out of an old PC since even in 2011 (note the date in the image name) that was a rather small amount.

If someone's computer hobby is IRC, BBS, Usenet, etc. then why would they need any more than a multiplexing terminal?

Really even a Raspberry Pi would be overkill for that.

You don't understand what date modified is.
Its when the file was actually created you can download files with insane dates like 1980 or 1970 2000 and other combinations this will do nothing for sorting in the order you downloaded.

You can try this for yourself artificially change the modification date of some files however you are to pleb for this.

idiot who only uses computer for facebook detected, can not even sort files.
>>
>>57117032
If you're doing that you're going to break half the sites you visit, and then have to spend a lot of time unbreaking them.

Sounds like a reason to upgrade to me.
>>
>>57117185

Did you ever even use this option?

>>
>>57117540
>>57117464
Date created and date modified (as well as date accessed sometimes) are all different characteristics. The date created is often not sortable, but the date modified is.

The date of creation is internal to the file, the modification date is amended on top of that. The date that it was copied (and this includes downloading) will always be classed as "modified."

Now go and be retarded somewhere else.

You are so funny.

Let me demonstrate.
Take your nicely ordered list of date modified.
Say you need to do some re editing of D.jpg ok.
You save it and BAM the file flies away since you modified it and the ordering is by modification date.

You actually need custom ordering for this. However after XP they killed it of. Not sort by modified date.
It will not help you kido.

So get your sort by modification and stuck it up your ass.
Also loads of fun if you have files that you move into a folder with modification dates of 2015 and they go to the top since all the crap you downloaded is 2016 and you like to have them on the bottom (last added)

My philosophy is this. And this is something that I live by. And I always have. And I always will. Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone, for any reason, ever, no matter what. No matter... where. Or who, or who you are with, or, or where you are going, or... or where you've been... ever. For any reason, whatsoever.

I have a Thinkpad T400 running Debian with KDE. Still works great. I got rid of my disc tray to add a bay for my second drive. I love this computer.

it's not like any task i do needs more than 192kb of ram anyway
i mean think about it, amount of variables it can remember is simply staggering

>saw a 200LX at a yard sale on Saturday
>didn't buy it because I didn't know if it was at all useful or worth anything

The guy knew his stuff though, he might've wanted more than a "cheap" price for it, but I didn't ask.

On a Dell Latitude D820 with a 1680x1050 screen, a big, 10-keyless keyboard & n i p p l e, 4 GiB of RAM, an Intel Core Duo, and Arch Linux.

It's actually rather nice, but it runs hot.
