I run Debian on all of my servers, workstations and laptops. I don't do it because I'm wetting my pants at night about the NSA, I do it because it's the best OS for me.

Tails is a live operating system that has tor built in.

Journalists might use it for communication yes but its designed to sit on some type of drive preferably flash and move with you from machine to machine.

Its not going to replace a full operating system like Debian with encryption on drive.

Qubes, Whonix and Tails mainly.

Signal, too, for some private communications.

There's also been some usage of Google Hangouts and Skype for giving public speeches.

I don't know what distro he uses...but if I was him. Problably do not use Linux or Windows. I problalby use a real Unix, Freebsd Problably, the portage compile all source and you may define what you want in compile process, very easy to do after set everything for the first time.
