What the best solution for automated backups on Windows 7? I don't need full system backups, just a few key files, maybe up to 1GB max. Little things like my bookmarks, my KeePass database, a .txt file I keep for notes, and my most recent game saves. I have a spare HDD that I'm going to partition to keep disk images of my smaller drives, which will have a few GB left over. That would cover drive failure, and I also have a handful of Raspberry Pis that I could leave at a friends house for an off-site backup, or I could rent a cheap VPS.

I'm also paranoid about the gubbmint, so I need to encrypt whatever I'm doing.

This is probably a kooky idea.

But if i have both my monitor and TV plugged into my computer, but don't want to use them both at once (to minimise faffing around with cables) is there any software mechanism that'll let me switch outputs between the one hooked up to my monitor or TV

Or since they are both 1080, will mirroring be more simple and effective?

Hey lads.
I'm not exactly an audophile, but I enjoy listening to high quality electronic music. Of course, I listen only to lossless formats, and have a more or less decent setup, excluding my external sound card, which is shit.
Now since I'm getting into DACs - why should I get SPDIF instead of a USB one? I hear that mixed DACs are not a good compromise.
Also, how are DACs performing with Linux? Is it relevant at all - driver wise and such?

Reposting from my thread yesterday that no one replied to.

When one is picking a GPU or CPU, the best course of action is to consult the benchmarks obviously to see how it performs in the games he wants to play and whatnot.

But here comes the problem.

Aren't new drivers, all memes aside, constantly being released to make the cards run better?
So if someone makes a benchmark right after a card comes out and it runs like crap, doesn't that kind of mislead the consumers?

What I would like to know is whether benchmarking sites tend to do some benchmarks when the card is released and then call it quits or whether they continuously update and redo their benchmarks to objectively show the current state of the CPU or GPU.

If there are such sites, which are they? Which ones only do one benchmark and call it quits and which continuously update their benchmarks?

>>
>>57112763
Theoretically, yes, that's an issue. In practice, if you aren't dealing with the bleeding edge, I wouldn't worry. When was the last time you remember updating chipset drivers? And all the GPUs in the test would be running on the same version of the drivers, and you tend to see huge increases in performance for all cards when they make new drivers to address specific games, not just the latest architecture(Although, yes, the newer ones might improve more... But realistically, not by much). And if you ARE dealing with bleeding edge, well, now you know why it's called that.

Barring flat out huge problems, benchmarks aren't WRONG, they just might not show as big of a performance difference at release as they might when all the cards involved reach EOL.

I want to get a new 2TB internal drive and one 2-4TB external drive.
The information I get from my research is very conflicting and I don't know how to decide on brands or even capacity ("Bro the 3TB drives will die in a week").

I also find info such as this

You'll probably be fine in most cases with your 1070 at 1440p max, some games are less forgiving though.

144hz if you can stand most being tn and having worse colors

1440p IPS if you do do more than videogaymes and can appreciate good color accuracy

I'd go with backblaze for reliability stats. It is my bible.

https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-q3-2015/

For non-OS storage, I currently use and would highly recommend HGST. Backblaze and a lot of people you'll speak to seem to agree, and if they are not, its WD red series drives. Both are renound for their reliability, possibly because they are technically the same company. Either way I guess. No firm preference on the SSD front, though while doing on the road breakfix for [EnterpriseLaptopOEM] I would see far less micron than intel or samsung drives, despite the former having a fuckhueg install base as compared to the latter two. I would buy Micron if they pop up in your hunting. I do have a 6 year old OCZ Agility 120 GB that has been in a daily drive laptop the whole time. Make of that what you will.

As to space, hard to tell. I just buy as much as I can. If it means saving for an extra few months so you can afford 4TB instead of 2TB, then do it fgt. the 4TB's will be cheaper in a few months anyway.

> So according to this a 7200 drive is not to be used as a main one?
For main (OS) storage, SSD, hands down. An SSHD would be the closest I'd let mechanics get to my OS. I used a Seagate SSHD in a work asset which (corporate bloat aside) felt as fast as an SSD in terms of usability, but I just prefer 100% solid state on my own machines. I'm fucking wet for my first NVMe storage.

one of my two ram modules crapped out and i'm left with a single 8gb stick. i looked up the warranty and i would have to send both dimms back since they were sold as a kit. a single stick from the same brand costs 66 euros, but the latencies are not exactly the same. another 16gb kit like the one i bought is 75. a 2x4gb kit costs 50 euro.

i have no backup computer and i need it for work, so sending the whole memory back under warranty is not possible.

what should i do? buy the single 8gb module and use it in dual channel, even though it's CL9 (vs my CL10)? get the 4x2gb and have 8gb dual chanel + 8gb single channel? or get the 8x2gb kit and have 16gb dc + 8gb sc?

That entirely depends. Owning pets, keeping it on the ground, running it all day, or just living in a dusty environment are all factors that make it worse--the more of them apply, the more often you should dust. Maybe once a month if it's very bad. If it's kept off the ground, in a clean environment, no pets, and you use an air cleaner in the room, only a couple times a year should be fine.

I want to format the SSD my OS is on and install fresh Win7 on it. I have no means of getting a legitimate Win7 .iso from Microsoft because I'm a moron and threw away my COA, but I did burn a repair disc through the control panel. Can I use this for what I want to do? I'm hearing conflicting things on the sites I've visited so far.

My mouse broke.
When I click the mouse wheel it doesn't do anything, it still scrolls fine but I can't easily open new tabs now.

I was using a Steel Series Rival, before that a Razer Deathadder and before that the Logitech meme mouse with the circles on it.
They all broke after a while.

What's a mouse that will last me longer?

The only thing I really want is those two buttons on the side that let you go back and forth in your browser, I like those.

you can put it wherever. I'd throw it on an old hard drive or an external if you just want it for safe keeping

There are plenty of external drives that have company software to automatically backup when any changes are detected in size of the source folders. If you want to keep it local to your machine, windows 7 does have an backup scheduler that allows you to choose which directories you want to backup. I prefer the external drive options though, for example my WD hdd stays off and whirrs up when my backup folder is changed, reduction or expansion, and the software let's me know when the back up is complete before powering down the unit again. As for encryption, use TrueCrypt and write your key down somewhere safe, a safety deposit box at a bank for example or a personal safe.

May as well go with ubuntu if you don't plan on learning it or using your system for anything else. There's tons of documentation out there for doing anything at all with ubuntu. You don't have to compile everything from the source. You could install firefox-bin instead. Libreoffice, for me, took like 30 minutes to compile and firefox only took about 7 minutes (both from source). The entire purpose of compiling from the source is to compile programs with specific USE flags to get rid of parts of programs you don't want or add functionality to it.

Hell, you don't even have to use portage if you don't want. You could even install another package manager and simply use portage to update the kernel/OS/other package manager.

Either way, Arch is still a valid option.

What is the ideal positioning of a router in a room to attain maximum coverage, particularly in terms of placement height?

My parents have a ZTE LTE router (ZTE MF910)

The connection in the house is absolutely horrendous, but when I take it for a drive, the closer I get to Oslo, the faster it gets.

At home (about 30km away) we get something like 2-3 Megabits per second, while it gets all the way up to 40 the closer I get to the capital.

I assume the house is located in some pocket where the signal is a lot weaker.

Any idea how much would something like this antenna in the pic would help the situation? Is it worth buying?

recently my torrent upload speed fucking tanked, and i have no idea why
speedtest.net says i have ~15 Mb/s up, but I'm seeding at ~50 kb/s, with occasional spikes, sometimes up to ~1 Mb/s.
of course, i thought this was because of leeches having low download speed, so to test it out i downloaded literally the first thing i saw on TPB's top 100 video list; download completed a couple hours ago, but i'm still only uploading at 50-100 kb/s.
i've checked my client's settings and speed itself is not limited, but maybe some other setting is affecting it.

what could it be?
>>
>>57119656
Or the LTE tower is placed in/near Oslo and you're just too far away.
A better antenna might help. Keep in mind that radio is getting near the black magic level of counter intuitive behavior so it might also make it worse.

>>
>>57119616
They are chips of identical function.

If the new one doesn't fit in the old one's spot, make sure the pins aren't bent at a different angle. Usually when DIP parts ship the pins are flexed a little outwards and need to be re-straightened to point directly down before they will slot into a PTH array.

I have a hypothetical security question. Say an attacker has physical access to my computer for an hour, but can't open it and mess with the hard drive directly. And the bios is password protected and I set it up to not allow booting from disk, usb, or network. Assume also that they don't have time to brute force the password. Would I be safe in such a situation from them loading a malicious OS/program or from them stealing my data? Would using those bios settings be worth it or are they easily bypassed?

Should i buy a new i5-4690, or keep my current G3258 and get good cooling, and a new motherboard to overclock it? (My current motherboard is really shitty. Can't OC, can't use most good processors.) Also, how good does the cooling need to be to overclock this shit to around 4.8 or so?
>>
>>57119728
Could be your ISP. Try a different torrent client first like the other anon said, then try this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/165481/how-to-test-if-your-isp-is-throttling-your-internet-connection/
>>

Cant get proper wired Internet, sadly, because when my parents moved in, they didnt ask for wired Internet and the landlady now refuses to share.

And there is no real alternative, since the ISP has a pseudo - monopoly in the whole country and basically owns the infrastructure.

I'm fugged

>>57120073
Oh, I didn't notice that you said upload speed specifically. In that case it might be because your router isn't set up for port forwarding, making it harder for downloaders to connect to you.

Go here and find a tutorial for your router. Forward the port(s) that your torrent client is using for incoming connections.

And both computers are behind the same router? No idea. That's odd.
>>
>>57120534
Maybe your main pc is using ipv4 and the laptop is using v6? I bet you could disable ipv6 on the laptop to test that theory. And of course, make sure that the port forwarding is going to your laptop's local ip address.
