I made new PC with i7-6700k two weeks ago.

I dont think that getting Kaby Lake would give me enough improvement.

I am right?
>>

i might. currently on 3770k at 4.6GHz

Is upgrading CPUs a meme or is there a discernible difference over say ivy bridge for gaming?
>>
Should I wait for Kaby lake or go with Skylake? My A8-5500 is on its last legs.
>>
Cuz im still riding the devils canyon i5 express senpai.
>>
When is it due out? I've been wanting to upgrade my 2500k for a while, was gonna get 6700k but decided to wait on kaby lake. Also I assume zen won't be as fast as kaby per core performance?
>>
>>57104963
What do you do that requires more? Ive got a 3570k and never have needed more, but it's not like Im using it professionally.
>>
>>57105005
Min fps goes way up. In tests between 4.6 GHz 2500k vs 6600k the 2500k would drop to 40s often in heavy scenes while 6600k would stay north of 65 at all times. Depends if that's worth an upgrade to you or not.
>>
>>57104492
This graphic compares the amount of power used by Skylake’s CPU and graphics engine to render 4K/10-bit HEVC video, versus Kaby Lake. Kaby Lake requires 0.5 watts on average, while Skylake required 10.2 watts—an enormous difference.

It will matter for tablets.
>>
>>57104158
Why would I pay more for worse performance?
>>

>>
Battery life during playback of 10-bit HEVC video barely dented the Kaby Lake XPS 13 thanks to its hardware support. I can’t say the same for the Skylake XPS 13.

>>
>>57105075
If Zen is even as fast as Haswell it will be a huge accomplishment for AMD.
>>
>>57104169
Same. Hoping the next gen Thinkpads get it. Apparently Skylake didn't work well with Linux. Also hearing that the integrated graphics will be a big boost which is pretty nice.

>>
>>57104158
I don't have much reason to with a 4790K that can do 4.7GHz. I'm only really looking to upgrade if there's a major upgrade in single-threaded performance, ideally in a CPU with 6+ cores as well.

Because performance improvements aren't big enough for me to care about. The only reason I'd upgrade is for VT-d (I run a 3570k, fuck) so I can have a Linux host and just do hardware passtrough to a Windows VM for muh games, but I can't seem to justify the price of an upgrade considering I'm a third-worlder and dual booting works well enough.

Zen and kaby lake are windows 10 only.
Windows basically forced em.

We might see ways around this as win7 still has the largest market share.

I had a Q6600 up until last year.

That chip just does not fucking stop. It's the i5 2500k of its generation.

Honestly unless you plan on using your PC for gaming or some sort of specialized task (CAD, rendering, etc) a C2Q or C2D with a decent clockspeed and 4+GB of RAM is perfectly usable for day to day computing. Slap a cheap SSD into any of the plentiful old Dell C2D Optiplexes you can get on Craigslist for free and you will be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and a modern i7 when you're just browsing Facebook or watching Netflix.

I'm currently building a 6600k based system because muh gaymes however.

I'm 90% sure this is a smart business play.. Be dumb, add small cheap changes, let AMD play catch up a little bit. then continue full speed after a while.

Kaby Lake is dropping instruction support for an older USB support if I recall correctly which means it would be impossible to install windows 7 conventionally as your keyboard/mouse wouldn't work with the windows 7 installer because it doesn't have the newer USB drivers
