Not your tech support
Get a server with a decent NIC and a couple antennas and you're all set. Even a sub-$5000 blade would do pretty well as a home router.

sorry your right i forgot to read the sticky before i posted.

im actually looking for something to use for my parents i do not want to go all out on it

Surely your parents deserve the best possible network connection? Plus, if you set up a good server rack for them, you'll have plenty of space to install some high-end compute servers later.

yeah your right i should stop being so selfish

pfSense on a home server with 100Mbps PCIe Wi-Fi card. I've disabled all the routing and firewall functions on the AT&T router, turning it into a regular modem.
Linksys AC3200 is the router I have
TP-Link 4300 with Gargoyle here
Works 4 me

Ignore any recommendations of netgear, linksys, tp-link, or other common brand names.
Get a Mikrotik and never use consumer trash again.

I run a solaris zone on my server with a dedicated two port gigabit nic. For wireless I use ubiquiti AP's.

Their software is solid and their hardware performs well.
Check thrift stores. Got a Linksys EA3500 for $6 yesterday to extend the wifi range. Would be perfect for normies. That Smart Wifi shit is so basic any geriatric should be able to use it.

just read the changelogs?
it's always one step forward and two back

If you have a landline phone service through comcast you won't be able to replace the actual modem so just throw it in bridge mode and go with
