I keep my Nexus 4 charged as a backup.

911 works and I can make calls via hangouts wherever there is wifi.

There are apps for that. A lot of them require root but as this is an old smartphone, it shouldn't pose a problem. Just google a bit. One of the first apps that popped up was e.g. SambaDroid

yeah towelroot is still a viable root option, but unlocking the bootloader to put on any rom i want is impossible. safestrap sidesteps the boot process, but only works with specific roms built towards use with safestarp. No CM13 for me

I bought chink vr goggles that I'll use with my n5, for cardboard and 3d movies. Not as good as the Samsung setup(and nowhere near the rift, vive, etc...) But should be good enough to test out if I want to invest more $$$ into it.

Also bought a new battery, but I'm 90% sure it was just a waste of $8 since I have yet to see anyone mention getting a good replacement n5 battery, even when paying $40.(current one gives maybe 2 hours of life)

Loved my Nexus 5 until wifi broke entirely. Also any time I restart the phone it stops recognizing the sim card and i have to repeatedly eject and reinsert it until it dies. Looking at a 5x next on account of the ridiculous price of the pixel.

Whenever I get a new phone the old one goes in a box on my shelf just in case.
The phone that one displaced I sell or donate depending on how much it's worth.
