I've noticed that when using mpv to watch videos over http/ftp, it sends a user agent of the operating system and the mpv version to the server.

Windows 10 "Film & TV" app VS mpv:

Both same video at the same point, 720p --> 1080p

Much higher resource usage (opengl is shit? mingw overhead? poor coding?).

Cannot tell the difference in video quality unless pressed against the screen and only on dark scene where mpv seems to blur some fine details (follow up with pics).

>>
>>57088504
Honestly, if you don't find the Film & TV app extremely limited in features and format support, you're not really part of the target audience of mpv (or MPC-HC.) Use whatever you want.

If you still want to use mpv, step one of debugging your "washed out colors" problem is to switch --hwdec off (and leave it off.) If that doesn't fix the colours, adjust --saturation, --contrast and --gamma to your liking. It's pretty silly to complain about mpv's default rendering when it's endlessly customizable. By default, mpv tries to render colours accurate to the file and therefore the intentions of whoever created the file. To make it more accurate, install a colour profile for your monitor and set --icc-profile-auto. If you don't find the "accurate" settings appealing, by all means, tweak the video equalizer to your liking.

>>
>>57097314
But it does support those things. An explanation for the retarded: mpv uses libavcodec, so it supports everything libavcodec supports, which is the same as what VLC and MPC-HC/LAV support. Codec support is generally not a problem for FOSS media players, because they can all just use libavcodec. Only proprietary media players have problems with codec support, because many video codecs are patented.

Applying a 16-235->0-255 filter twice should have the same effect as raising the contrast and lowering the brightness, so try:
contrast=16
brightness=-6

I'm not 100% sure those values will have exactly the same effect. If it's not strong enough, try:
contrast=36
brightness=-12

You realize you're just crushing the blacks and then un crushing them right? Which is inaccurate to the source file.

Literally just turn up contrast and lower gamma and you'll have the same thing.

The Xbox 360 and One do this, which is why they look more "vibrant" whenever there's a comparison with another console.

When really you can just adjust your TV settings for a PS4 and it'll look just as vibrant.

That recommendation is not for OSX. It exists because some popular distros like debian usually ship with old ffmpeg versions and updating it might break software. So you build a local ffmpeg version and statically link it to mpv. On OSX a recent ffmpeg (you can't even get old ones with brew) is not a problem as nothing on your system will go for whatever you installed with brew. E.g. GUI apps don't inherit your customized PATH.

To prevent misunderstandings: it supports building the latest git master but it does not support building/linking it static.
