Why don't people like Unity?
>>
>>57080532
People don't like loonix in general. Can't blame them since it was just a hobby OS created for users to rice it as much as possible and post their desktops somewhere on the web.
>>
>>57080545
I'm asking more why Linux users (people who do like Linux) don't seem to like Unity.
>>
coz its detected atm just like aimware
>>
Touchscreen desktop designed by hipster millenials.
>>
>>57080552
Probably because it limits how much they can rice their desktop thereby giving them less street cred in desktop threads.
>>
>>57080532
Because /g/ hates thing that work and too user friendly, like watching kids cartoons
But at the same time, Debian is one of /g/'s favorite distros along with Gentoo
It's still the best beginner friendly distro along with Sabayon and Linux Lite

But anyway, it's just an opinion so i hope you don't listen to some strangers on an American Imageboard owned by a Japanese
>>
>>57080532
They hate change. Unity is a fairly stark change from most DEs. If you don't bother to try and adjust it's inefficient.
>>
>>57080532
The Unity dash is a poorly executed abomination and it used to be slow as fuck. The dock is ugly because of the way it handles icons. Hopefully Unity 8 will fix that because it's actually a decent DE otherwise. I use it.
>>
>>57080554
Tfw want to cheat but too lazy to level a smurf acc to be able to mm
>>
>>57080532
It's ugly and feels too much like Mac OS.
>>
>>57080532
My question is who -does- like it?

It's been nothing but a pain in the ass since the day it was introduced. I have never once seen anyone who spends much time with a computer use Unity as their primary DE.

At this point it seems like it's just plain stubbornness for Canonical to continue to push it.

>>
>>57080777
I like it and spend most of my day on a computer. It's ugly but very usable. Gnome 3 feels incredibly forced though.
>>
>>57080777
I like it because it maximizes screen real estate by integrating fullscreen windows' title bars into the menu bar. There are aspects of it that are a pain in the ass but no more than any other DE I've tried.

I like it. I switched when KDE decided to go to to the bug-ridden shit that was 4.0, 4.1, 4.2. Honestly even the best plugins for 3.5 were still buggy shit.

I never liked Gnome because it had menus that were not very configurable. Today's Gnome might be better in that respect, but Unity essently bypassed the whole issue by including a dock. Unity is very stable in my experience and the default keyboard shortcuts are pretty comprehensive. Best Linux DE IMO.

FTFY

Change just for the sake of change is just as bad as being afraid of change. If you are going to do something completely differently then there should be a good reason for it. Unity lacks that reason.

What kind of question is that? Just look at it.
>>
>>57080532
Unity from a user perspective is not bad, but it isn't really great either. I have trouble coming up with real unique qualities to be found in unity's design.

* It is not very pretty-looking. Of course it can made to be so, but what can't?
* It is not very efficient or intuitive from a usage perspective. As someone who's now used to the power of a tiling wm I think it's safe to say that Canonical haven't exactly revolutionized UX here.
* This also includes the fact that they haven't really dared to leave old and stupid paradigms in desktop UX. They still use `Alt+F4` to close windows and there are a lot more binds using `Alt+something` for core functionality.
* Meanwhile, you can press `super+m` to invert colors for the whole screen. Great prioritizing, Canonical.
* Speaking of efficency, this DE also way too ressource-hungry considering it doesn't really look that good or offers that great an experience.
* The launcher and the top task-bar waste a *huge* amount of screen space without really exposing a lot of functionality.
* The dash is nothing more than a needlessly complicated program launcher/document opener but did an okay job at that, to be fair. At least how I experienced it.
* The normal Desktop Environment apps are nothing to write home about either. The [control-panel-thingy](http://distrowatch.com/images/screenshots/ubuntu-11.10-settings.png) looks like [any other linux-control-panel thingy](http://www.tecmint.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/desktop.jpg), as does the file manager and most other things. No wonder as most of these apps probably aren't original software.
* Leaves us at the gtk theme and the icons. Again, not really pretty so kinda defeating the point. Other people have done way better.

Don't really want to defend Gnome here, but I would hope Gnome users would at least use the shell extensions that fix their problem with vertical space. That is what Gnome 3 is all about, isn't it? Using extensions in order to overcome terrible design decisions.
I do quite like the way Ubuntu handles the window decorations and application options by default, and when I was using Unity I had the taskbar set to autohide, which made it much more bearable.

What this guy said: >>57087504

The Maximus NG extension removes the top bar when windows are maximized. Not as much room saved as Unity, but clearly an improvement over the default.
>>
>>57080777
I like it and I spend most of my waking hours (80%) in front of it. I like it and it handles window management quite well ootb. Plus once you get used to it both the dash and the HUD are really helpful and I couldn't imagine not having them. I must admit that it's really ugly by default, though. The colour scheme and the icons are just fugly. Luckily that's easily fixed with paper icons and flatabulous theme.
>>
>>57080875
I just installed Ubuntu. Can you tell me how to make it look like this? The very least point me in the right direction, thanks.

>>57090264

>>57090797
Install the "Unity Tweak Tool Software" (Google how to install it if you don't know), which allows you to change the icons and the window decorations. I personally like the Paper Icon Theme and the Flatabulous GTK theme. The guy in the screenshot used the Numix Circle Icon theme and the Arc Darker GTK theme.

If you google those themes you'll find step-by-step guides how to install the icon themes from PPAs (personal, user-maintained software repositories which allow you to update the themes with your package manager) or by just copying the theme files in the right folder in your /home/ directory.

What I did when I started my Linux journey was to just google everything like "paper icon theme ppa" and then "how to install from ppa" and now all the basic tasks are a breeze for me.

Pic related is how my desktop looks.

The panel on the left? You can change the colour and size of the icons or you can have it autohide, but you can't remove it. If you don't like it, you should have a look at the GNOME DE with the Dash to Dock extension or MATE with Plank. Both MATE and GNOME are there own standalone desktop enviroments which you can install on any Linux installation (on yours also, or you can install a Ubuntu flavour that comes with it preinstalled Ubuntu Gnome and Ubuntu MATE, in this case).

Hope this helps.

This is the problem with Gnome shell, they expect you to use 3rd party extensions to make their DE usable so they don't have to answer for bad design desitions and feature removal.
>>
>>57091012

Do this if you want a full KDE desktop (>>57091068)
I hate it and think it looks like a tacky and worse Windows rip-off but maybe it fits your tastes better than unity.

The best thing about Linux is that you can install any desktop environment on your Ubuntu installation with just a simple command and just pick which one you want when you login to your PC. If you're completely clueless about what you're doing, maybe read guide on how to do what you want to do though and go by that.
>>
>>57091131
admittedly, MATE has all of this stuff integrated into the DE, which I find a lot nicer, but then again changing the cursor design is buggy as hell on MATE so I guess the good comes with the bad.
I would prefer these features were built-in but the third-party solution just werks for me, so I find this acceptable.
>>
>>57091081
>>57091138

I think I found one I liked, called Plasma. I'm assuming any Linux DE works with Ubuntu as well? Stupid question maybe but better safe than sorry.
>>
>>57091332
Plasma is the name for the latest version of KDE, and yeah it's on Ubuntu. For the best experience, you should look at Kubuntu or KDE Neon.
>>
>>57091332
Yes, you can install it on any Ubuntu installation. Just use this command :

sudo apt install plasma-desktop

to install only the desktop environment or use this command here >>57091068
to install all the default programmes, too.

However, there could be some bugs that come with installing Plasma over your existing Unity install that I might not know about, so better follow a guide. Or if you can be bothered, do a reinstall of Linux with a fresh Kubuntu iso. Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE Plasma (K Desktop Enviroment) preinstalled. This way you can be 100% sure everything works as intended and you won't have any duplicate programmes (like 2 text editors and 2 music players).
>>
>>57087138
Seriously, Gnome's top bar is so fucking hideous and useless, and they managed to make it even worse by adding ridiculous amount of extra margin/padding to title bars on their default theme. What were they thinking?
>>
