I just got a new 4K TV, and apparently my graphics card does not support that resolution through HDMI. Yet the option is there to choose when I go to resolution settings. Why is this, and what would happen if I run it like that? Does this kill the GPU?
Should have bought Intel GPU
Nvidia drivers are junk
you need to make sure your gpu has the correct hdmi port for 4k

It doesn't. What happens if I try anyway?

it'll just spit a message out at you saying the resolution isn't supported

Nah, it actually works somehow. I bought the TV the other day and tried it, but I don't feel comfortable using it in case it kills GPU somehow.

just use displayport cable with a hdmi adapter, as long as it's the right HDMI spec (HDMI 2.0 is the only one that supports 4k 60fps afaik) then it should be fine.
and no it won't kill the gpu, you're probably just getting lower framerate - hdmi 1.4 still supports 4k just at 24fps max.

Oh yeah, that makes a lot of sense. That's why the TV frame interpolation works when I output in 4K instead of in 1080p60.
I'll likely upgrade my GPU soon-ish anyway, so won't bother buying a displayport adapter. Unless the new BBC Earth comes out in 4K before I can afford a new GPU.
Thanks!
