4chan users, I come to you today in need of desperate assistance.

I made a grave mistake.

I presume the USB cable to my external 4TB hard drive came lose, and was re-recognized by the OS. The windows dialog prompt appeared: "to use this HD you need to format this disk" or something.
The two options below were: 'FOrmat Now' and 'Cancel'.
As I reached for the mouse to hit cancel, my right hand brushed the ENTER key, commencing a FORMAT! Shiiiiiit. FUck you windows. WHy have format pre-selected??!
I was quick to cancel it...But now it seemingly needs a format to give it a file system.
I can't access any of my files or even use the hard drive any longer.

I've downloaded EaseUS Data Recovery WIzard to try to retrieve the files.

Have I lost them completely? Will I need another harddrive to copy them onto before I can resuse this hard drive? Is there a way to give it a file system format without reformatting?

Please, any help and advice would be appreciated.

I wonder if ddrescue will work in this case

HA! I needed that laugh... Thanks :)

>>57070879
Can you explain why I would need to boot linux from a usb? Can I not just run testdisk on my normal OS and use it as it is?

>>57070927
Yeah... It was a quick format. Thank you for the reassurance.

Phew. Panic averted.
I'm looking into testdisk right now.

Thanks also.. I'll take a look at that as well.

EaseUS is showing the folders and files.. so far anyway. It's at 1% with over 10hours to go.

So, fingers crossed, I wouldn't have lost anything. It's just going to be a pain copying the files to another drives ONLY to give it a file sytem 'NTFS'....

Just restore from backup

In these sorts of threads op never ever has a backup

OP here. I shake and hang my head in shame - it's true... No backup made... Tut tut...

I should've learnt my lesson years ago after getting cyclic redundancy errors on 2 drives and lost the lot. That shit was painful.

I'll be a sensible & intelligent computer user one day.... Like... this week....I'll start with backups after this... It's basic shit really...

You could use TestDisk to retrieve your files somewhere safe, but it'd be really time intensive most probably. Not too sure about partitioning it without moving files and stuff.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
