As much as Java gets shit on, it is one of the most used languages right now so if you want a job, java is a good one to know. C# is also popular and, as such, a good choice.

they are almost the same. If you learn one, you will know the 90% of the other.

c# is not reliable outside of windows, while java behaves well on windows, linux, osx and android, at least on those simple gui programs i tried to write.
If you want to learn one language and quickly start writing (low quality) programs i think it's good.
Also if you want to make a multiplatform program with only one codebase it's either c++ with qt or java with javafx.
I program as a hobby, and i prefer java because it's easier and it allows me to make both programs and applications
