Fucking gtk update broke mate, firefox and pretty much everything else
KDE is pretty nifty these days, and its down to around 470mb of ram on idle, much better than even just a few months ago.
The blue lock screen is ugly as fuck though and sddm is cancer, but I always use xinit so whatever.
Big problem though, it was unusable at first and I had to use the arch wiki to recompile the cache, but everything worked after that, just know how to use w3m or wget.

I am using KDE. There's this weird problem where on the first time I try to start the Dolphin file picker, it freezes. Like it is going through and checking each hard drive i have connected but not necessarily mounted.

Also, I notice that it seems to regenerate the thumbnail cache every time I open it, or something like that because thumbnails take forever to load as opposed to Windows or something else.

Otherwise I really like it, but that's only because it's the only usuable QT distro until LXQT gets their shit together, or GTK devs get their shit together and add proper thumbnail support. (No, a list view is not proper support.)

Discovering the application menu certainly changed my opinion, because I find the default start menu to be really sluggish since it plays an animation before switching to a tab. It's much more simple and looks all around better
>>
Does it still have vertical tabs in it? I remember thinking "hell naw!" when I first saw them back in the early-to-mid 2000s.
>>
back in the late '90s/early '00s I had my first contact and try with linux on a distro called Conectiva, which I think is exclusive here for Brazil.

Everything was fine, I was learning things fast, terminal and all. I really feel in love with gnu/linux.

But I couldn't make the internet work, it didn't have the drive for my moden or something, it quickly became a real nightmare. The desktop environment was KDE, and I grow to hate it.

Up to this day every time I see KDE I get this bad feeling that I'm about to sperg the fuck out. It just makes me feel bad.

A noob question here. Can you actually change your graphical desktop environment. I mean distros come with some environment, is it possible to switch?
Another question, does KDE depend on systemd like GNOME?
>>
>>57071974
Not just the shit logo, faggot, but all the shit UI elements that exist in KDE. They need someone who knows what they're doing. They have a decent looking product already, but it will have to be better.

Eat shit and die, you fucking moron.
>>
>>57071977
No problem senpai. It was a game changer for me, too. it's so much fucking cleaner. I always start my programs just by typing part of the shortcut anyways, so this was a much better choice for me.

>>57071989
>can you change your desktop environment?
Yes. DE's are a separate entity from your "Distro" if you will, it's just that people get together and make distros based on the DE. (IE Kubuntu is the unofficial KDE distro, while KDE Neon is maintained by the KDE team)

Switching is KIND of easy, but in my experience it can be a pain in the ass on an ubuntu distro. I had issues with dependencies not getting removed, so I don't recommend you try to remove your distro outright.

If you are on ubuntu, you would simply apt-get the distro (google how to install the distro and it will give you the package names) and then when you go to log in, there will be a button that allows you to switch desktop environments.

>Is it dependent on SystemD
As a noob, you perhaps shouldn't be too concerned with this. However, I wouldn't EXPECT KDE to be dependent on systemD, but perhaps a Gentoo fag or somebody else can shed light on this.

You would probably have to recompile the package.
>>
>>57071282

I only use two extensions, topicons plus (puts tray icons in top bar) and user themes (lets you use shell themes from user directory). Once you get used to gnome it's actually really nice, you can launch anything by just pressing super then typing its name.

Chromium uses Aura, its own toolkit, instead of GTK and the file picker is dependant on DE. In Plasma, KDialog is used.
>>
>>57078836
Chromium requires GTK2 to compile on Linux (it can be compiled with GTK3 instead but not Qt). GTK is the front-end on Linux. Cocoa in OS X and Windows API in Windows.
>>
>>57078885
>Chromium requires GTK2 to compile on Linux (it can be compiled with GTK3 instead but not Qt).

It uses it to infer GTK theme settings, not for the front-end. That's all Aura. They used to use GTK, but to prepare for Chrome OS they switched.

Win 10 tries to send my shit to MS all the time. Old windows versions for obsolete software. Having windows, macos and linux running at the same time speed up things. You should try that. Dualbooting just to check something is a waste of time.

>but I will never understand how people can use that garbage
Pretty easily. The general idea is is that you run your windows maximized and navigate between them using workspaces. Which is how a lot of people use Linux on the desktop. It also helps that the desktop is consistent - Konqueror with the full suite of kparts was spectacular in KDE 3. Now I'm not even sure if KDE has its own browser.
