I'll work at the one that's going to be relevant in 5 years, cubicles or not.

That said, open offices are horribly distracting. I'm not sure how people get any work done when people are yelling across the room at each other.

OP's pic also looks like they'd have no idea about netsec. I expect for all their info to be stolen within 2 years.

My old boss had the best setup:

His office was in a separate room attached to the shop, so to get to his office you had to walk through the shop, and then to his desk.
He put a magnet switch on the door that would play if you opened it, and had a camera pointed at the doorway.

The ultimate in privacy and control.

We all like to bitch and moan, but deep down we know that we would hate more interaction with people.
>>
>>57058622
People likes macs but they "just werk." No thought involved, they will work well until the hardware fails. Startups like this because it means they don't have to keep someone on retainer to fix things. Bigger companies can afford this easily, so windows pc start to make sense then. It also makes sense for people who aren't afraid to build their own desktops which is an ever declining demographic in this generation of instant gratification.
>>
At the local vocational school for programmers there are half-cubicles for every student. This was done for two reasons: limit distractions and to prepare students for a stringent work environment. Now, because these were only half cubicles, they were only half as effective as real cubicles and, as a result, weren't very good at preventing memeing. We call it memeing because these were kids in junior to senior years who would poke their heads out of their work areas to tell their neighbors about stupid memes.

I'm only really forced to interact with other devs, and they're friends from previous jobs so I don't mind them. Everyone else I'm just really rude to when they try to talk to me, so I'm generally left alone. Sometimes the office gets noisy and I have to wear headphones but it's not that bad generally.

My startup built an app. I've been there for almost a year doing backend dev work. We're still very small and you've probably not heard of us.

Also just a friendly reminder that no one does real work on macs. Like ever. period.

Also connecting from a Mac to an actual real computer running a linux that isn't bad (like OSX, which is a bad linux) via SSH does not count as the mac actually doing that work.

Thanks.
>>
>>57060496
This is correct, only graphic designers and programmers use macs. The other 95% of us use windows or linux like a normal person.
>>
>>57060492
Not sure what that's supposed to mean.

If you're saying they have a really cliche website design, I agree, but their purpose is to farm clicks from middle age women.
>>
>>57060511

Most programmers I know use non-bad Linuxes which is basically anything that isn't OSX, or they use Windows.

I work in academia at a well known STEM university and none of the faculty that do research use Macs. They all use PCs running Windows or Linux, and do heavy duty work on Linux clusters.

The only people who use Macs are the odd dean and business staff who travel because they just need something that runs Office that they can burn $2000-3000 in funding on. They know they can get a PC laptop for half that with a better warranty and hardware, but they don't get to keep the difference so may as well get something that has pleasant aesthetics and makes them look important.

Only retards work for startups.

You're not going to be the next Steve Jobs, and you're not going to be on the "ground floor" of the next big thing. It's not going to happen.

You're going to get used hard and put up wet, work 70+ hour weeks in exchange for having stupid office amenities that no adult needs (what a proper adult needs is paid vacation and sick days they don't get fired for using, good heathcare, and a good retirement plan), pay $2000 a month to live in someone's back yard, and then end up floating to another bad startup when bad investments and the general uselessness of the "product" fails to produce a buyer when the angel investor cash runs out.

Basically you're a bitch if you work for a startup or go to the bay area in general.

>>57060626

>calling anyone who uses Xcode a "developer"

i tried anon i really did

i started a new job and they gave me windows 10 instead of a mac. it sucked so i decided to install linux on it. i think it was either ubuntu or fedora. not my first time doing it, i've messed around with linux a few times beforehand.

took like 2 days to work out all the broken shit

a week later X just broke. lost another day of work to fix it. and then it broke again the next day so i gave up.

tried developing on windows after that but it was just really really terrible, no one should do that unless you're a .NET cuck

OS X is the only logical conclusion to my journey. no problems ever (well sometimes there's a problem but nothing major). it's just not worth all the effort for freedom.
>>
>>57061003
the secret is to just ignore them and do whatever you want, you can get away with it in a low-management situation and they can't fault you for it if they're going to be cliquey assholes

>paychecks bounce
the solution to this is to negotiate for upfront payment and to not do anything if your paycheck doesn't arrive

Apple computers are objectively more beautiful but I don't see how they work better. The UI is annoying and I don't like it. Everything from the icons to the noises are pretentious and unnecessary.

I got used to Linux in less than a week. But I still have problems adjusting to macs. I don't need bouncing icons, I don't need everything to be shiny, I don't need to overpay for hardware.

I like the way Macs look hardware wise - they are objectively beautiful pieces of industrial design - but I just don't need it. I've never been doing something and thought, "If only I was on a Mac!".

Not him but I'm 32 and there is definitely a huge difference between people born in the 80s and even early 90s and the current crops of 20 somethings.

Also Millenial isn't an absolute term, the definition varies.

According to pic related I could be Gen X (1984). The biggest difference is whether person in question grew up with ubiquitous social networks and lack of privacy, which basically means growing up in the early 2000s. Maybe millennial isn't the right term, but those faggot kids born in the mid to late 90s are the fucking worst kind of trash.
