Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

My almost brand new Citizen Promaster NY0040 just came in the mail and it feels a much more solid than the 10 year old one I sold a few days ago (bezel clicks, winding). This one has a much more subtle blue sunburst effect in the dial, which is not a bad thing. The older one was way to shiny. The stronger green lume looks great.

(Reposting in new thread in case they missed it)

You are confusing the Seiko 4r35, based on the 7s26, with the 4s15 which is a modern update of the Seiko 52xx series from the 70s.
It is a 28,800 bph movement with a micro-adjuster for the regulation and is directly comparable in quality and inherent accuracy to an ETA 2892-A2.
>>
>>57056109
In what way is it garbage? I like the way it looks and it functions perfectly. Also got it far far below its ordinary price via an Amazon special.
>>
>>57057288
A. Stuhrling is cheap chink shit, your chronograph probably doesnt even have the proper hand function which then obviates the tachymeter.
B. You fell for an insidious marketing trick where the "regular" price is enormously inflated compared to its typical retail price in order to give the perception that you got a great deal.
A seiko SSB or SNDA chrono offers greater function and quality for probably the same rough price bracket.
>>
>>57057438
Fair enough. So far the construction seems solid, though. And when I say I got a good deal, I mean relative to the realistic e-tail price, not the bullshit MSRP. It was $70AUD delivered. Like 50% off.

I was strongly considering a Seiko SKS519P2, but at twice the price I backed out. Kind of regretting it now for the looks, but I think I can turn my Stuhrling for a profit when the time comes for an upgrade. Pretty happy with it as a starter. Just spent a good fraction of what I paid for it on a new braided wristband , though.

Well it's a really particular design, you'll love it or hate it, it's ok.
I really like its 90s industrial design, and imo as classic as the SKX, which happens to be more known by the mainstream while being a more expensive watch with less features (handwinding and applied lume for example).

Would like to add that this model also has a pretty cool history behind, having been officially issued to the Italian Navy under the name of "Marina Militare" and it was also rated with a water depth resistance of 500m even though it's exactly the same watch as today (rated 200m by Citizen).
I think the SKX has never been issued to any military unit in the world, and is objectively a worse watch for professional diving due to its lack of hand winding.
In short: NY0040 > SKX007
>>

I fully agree that the Citizen is the superior watch, IMO even better looking due and more readable due to the polished markers

Is it reasonable to expect an SNK809 (or the other color variants) to run for 4 to 5 years without any service?

>>
>>57058860
that seems reasonable. In a number to the seiko movement manuals I've looked at there have been temperature ratings. You should expect to have your accuracy altered a bit. Depending on how extreme your winters are you might even shy away from mechanicals altogether.

Line gains 15s a day and it kinda pisses me off. I would regulate it myself like I've done with my other automatics but I've read on some thread on WUS that it's in fact a very delicate movement and you could fuck it up by trying to regulate it, for example by not hacking the movement beforehand, like happened to some guy.

As a rule of thumb, mechanical watches need a service every 5 years.
That being said, I've had my SNK803 for 5 years and I plan to just run it into the ground. I'll get a new one when it's too far out of whack. It's about +1m/day at the moment since I've banged it on so much shit.

I did, with a misaligned chapter ring, 9 year old movement that was on the servicing limit, and it was in need of a new crystal. Which i sold for a profit to so Malaysian guy.

A brand new one shipped should be in the vicinity of 210~230$, while a neo-turtle is 30 to 50$ more. My issue is that i'm unsure if i want to keep the SKX007 or sell it along with the super-oyster to fund one of these two.

The plans for now:
>sell the Dugena and get another vintage auto swiss watch (GP/RG)
>sell the two Poljot's to the WUS cucks
>Perhaps sell the SKX
>eventually to get a proper NY0040 and SRP777 with well aligned chapter rings.

What's the point of having a collection of watches that u don't wear? As I conceive it, you have ONE watch that u wear everyday and cherish and will pass down to ur child, or maybe 2 watches: casual and dress. Or 1 working and 1 being repaired (me).

But 10 watches sitting there doing nuthin and collecting dust?? What's the point?

This is a real question not à troll, I'm genuinely curious, and maybe in 10 years i'll have 20 watches.

Anon you have two watches that both can be considered as field watches, do you wear them both at the same time or do you rotate between them?

It's un-updated version. The 6206 and resin block are gone, while pic related is added.

The 3133 chronographs are pretty solid if you can find them in good shape, up to 48~50 hours of PR if the chronograph isn't running and as shockproof as they get. Mine fell crystal first on a tile and it was only slightly chipped, while the tile somehow cracked.

I'd happily get a brown suburst dial 5216 with a faced crystal as well.

Also, there is a white faced 7016 on eBay. Is it just me or does the dial seem too good to be true?
>>

Assuming you mean the round one, the neon colors on the hands plus the CPU try of origin do lead me to raise a Spockian eyebrow.

On the other than, the dial seems to have existed in that colour combo at the time.

Good to see you back. Been away a while?

To be honest, I am utterly convinced that there is no such animal as a blue sunburst 52xx. I have personally never seen one and I cannot locate them in the 1970-1975 Seiko catalogs either. I still want a sunburst LM Special though, but I need to clear out some room in my watch box. Maybe the KQ needs to go, real nice watch but haven't worn it in months.

I haven't been posting that much lately but I've been around.

I'm pretty sure there are a limited number of blue sunburst 52xx variants, as the Seikoholics threads about the LM Special contain a couple of variants, and Antique Watch Bar, which vets their watches, has listed a 5206-6020 that clearly has a blue sunburst dial.

They are rare, and many of the blue dialed LM Special models originally came with faceted crystals, but a small number do seem to exist. If I ever find a 5206-6020 with a blue dial in decent shape I'll take a serious run at it.

What exactly in his post suggested he was having any issue with accuracy?

By the way, the Seiko 52xx series movement is one of the best volume produced movements of all time for inherent accuracy, up there with the ETA 2892-A2, Omega 56x/75x, as well as the vintage Rolex 303x calibers (though those are much harder to regulate yourself due to a free spring balance).

All of these movements, in good condition, should easily be able to pass COSC testing.

>>57064346
The gaining 15s a day part. If you want out of the box accuracy from a mechanical watch you better off getting a Rolex or Omega. Most people don't regulate their own watches but hey if you do more power to you.
>>
>>57064489

Am I blind? Where did the guy with the blue 5216 mention it was gaining time?

And if you at all care about accuracy, you should learn to regulate movements yourself. It isn't that hard to learn for non free spring balance movements, and it makes a world of difference.

Both of my Seiko 52xxs run under +2s/day (under +1s/day mostly, and with very little positional variation), my Lemania 5100 runs +5s/day (no micro adjuster), as do both my 6r15s (again, no micro adjuster).

The way I see it is that if accuracy doesn't matter then there is no point in paying for more than the cheapest Seiko or Orient with hacking.

How did you infer that I was having accuracy issues? This watch was doing about +2s until it got magnetized. A quick visit to the watchmaker and a free degausser sweep fixed that. I just happened to let it run down, and then it needed to be restarted.

Though to be honest fampai, G-Shocks are over-engineered, and a basic Casio would be enough for pretty much everything, with the F-91W being used all around the world by people who've been through some shit being a testament to that. The only guarantee you have with a G-Shock is that it will survive what would kill you, when it may kill your average Casio. Well, first of all it was a 5206-6120 on Antique Watch Bar, not a 6020! Even so, with Seikos the case model number doesn't necessarily describe the dial variation, as they have different product codes and the same dials can be used in multiple cases, or multiple dial options offered in the same case.

Haven't seen Shane lately as I've not been adding any more vintage pieces lately.

I have to say my Lemania 5100 has shown almost zero drift since it's last service. Been a pretty rock steady +5s/d since. I haven't tried to get it any closer because I hate regulating movements without a micro-adjuster, and I'd rather have +5 than -1s/d so I just leave this one as is.

The watch I want should have:

-> several daily alarms (for medication)
-> illumination if possible
-> can be digital or "analouge" I dont care for that
-> Current date

What would be cool

-> Changeable battery
-> Should be good built quality and be useable as daily driver and therefore robust too
-> Two Timezones

Since ima fat faggot, something a bit more chunky would be good as a tiny casio looks like shit on my arms.

I want to spent 0-100 Euro.

>>57072279
You really should not be blaming the watch for what the watchmaker did, but yes, the movement and the metal links in the SKX are both kind of shit. Watch itself is excellent, and with a 6R15 the thing is unbeatable.

>>57073053
Suwa Seikosha, 56x6 movement. Generally, the only 56 caliber movements you want are the ones with no day/date display, since that was the weak point in these things. Even then, it will usually only beat at 21600 bph, while the 52xx beats at 28800 (smoother seconds hand) and also has a much more robust day/date mechanism (the 5216 has one that is theoretically unbreakable). Unless you see a Suwa Lord Matic with a really, really fucking neat design, I would say you are better off with the Daini (5206, 5216, etc) ones.

Also as other people mentioned, it looks like that particular unit had a bunch of shit replaced, which is something you generally want to avoid in older watches.

Sorry to hear that gorgeous 7018 sounds like it's going to need some work. Beautiful watch, honestly. I'd be after one of those myself if I didn't already have a Lemania 5100.

If you are looking for another 52xx down the road, but aren't in a rush, I'd consider stalking Y! JP auctions for a while. I know the risk is higher than eBay bit with patience you can find the occasional real steal on there.

I haven't really been looking lately because I want to sell off a few of my modern watches first, so I've not really been letting my self keep much of an eye out for a blue dialed 52xx recently.

Also, Shane must be bewildered at all the vintage JDM Seikos he suddenly suddenly started seeing since they became a meme, given that half of /wt/ apparently lives in Southern Ontario.

F91-W is a meme, and is not good.
Seiko 5 is generally understood to be right around 50 bucks for the base stuff. I'd move it up a category and replace your less than symbols with approximate "~" symbols.

The best value g-shocks are the 40 dollar ones.

Miyota/Seiko driven kickstarter stuff may be interesting, but is not going to hold up to thinks like SAR* in terms of quality and value.

When you get into watches in the thousands I personally wouldn't include that in your guide, I mean really, if someone wants to spend 20k on a watch they shouldn't be reading a guide for it on 4chan.

Also modern fifty fathoms is rapper-tier huge and gross. Maybe if they release another, more reasonably sized, anniversary edition. Super lame.

So, 10 bucks on amazon. 7 year battery life, one of the least water resistant watches they make, one of the least accurate modules they make.

How about LW201 for under 12 bucks, or W210 under 14.

So for a couple more bucks, you can potentially get something with 1/3rd reduced inaccuracy, more than 40% more battery, and substantially more water resistance (F91W splash resistant --> 5 BAR resistance on both of those.) A significantly better light and afterglow. How about instead of a chronograph that can't even count past 1 hour you get a full 24 hour chrono? The better module is also able to actually actively track dual time you can switch between without needing to adjust the actual time in the watch.

We're talking about a 2-4 extra bucks top for a watch that's pretty much head and shoulders better than F91W in every way. And it's going to even have a better feeling strap.

What's a good watch for a med student trying to impress teachers (mostly 50 year old+ men)? That is, to look old-style, conservative - Basically, something they themselves would likely wear.

Patek Philippe, Rolex, Omega, Breguet, Vacheron Constantin... off the top of my head. Then the more accessible ones like Seiko and Orient, and the ones that have brand strength but might not be actually good like Bvlgari and Armani. Would have to google or think harder to remember more.

I'd think most people would at least have heard of half of those brands.

But for around $300 I'd try to get some second hand Omega from Chrono24:

Though I don't like second hand watches, I'd get some Orient. It has some vintage looking watches around that price range.

Movement is made in Japan, unlike the Seikos sold in the west.

good luck.
>>
>>57080639
>I'd think most people would at least have heard of half of those brands.
Most people would have heard of Rolex and Seiko. Omega if they pay attention to their branding all over James Bond and the olympics.

Doubt PP or VC. Or even Breguet.

Also, Armani doesn't make watches, chinese factories make watches and brand some of them with Armani logos.

You can probably pick up a vintage Omega for your sub 300 dollar price tag. It's probably going to be either beat to shit or refinished.
>>
>>57080677
Gracias, amigo. I'll avoid the Seikos in that case.

>Armani doesn't make watches, chinese factories make watches and brand some of them with Armani logos.

>>
>>57080754

Of the three companies, they've done the most with respectable watchmaking. They've even made minute repeaters -- ultra thin minute repeaters.

>Louis Vuitton
They've formed some partnerships and taken advantage of the other watchmakers under the LVMH conglomerate. But besides a few, very expensive, pieces most of it is very overpriced and gaudy with giant LV plates on the watch case and whatnot.

Armani is different, it's 30 dollar watches sold for 300.
