F-Droid has plenty of good 'uns, i use "Clear List" as an organizer. OpenCamera is alright, Anysoft keyboard too.

One thing it's lacking though is a decent Navigation app, The ones available just plain suck.

a.) there are some things that Google won't let on the app store. Ad-away is the big one, Google does not want you rooting your device and then using the hosts file to block ads, since they're an ad company.
b.) because they're an ad company, they want to collect information on everything you do on your device, correlate it with things they know about you from other places, and build up a complete profile of you. Which they then sell to advertisers to target their ads. People who remove gapps generally do it so they can have a phone that doesn't tell anything to the Google mothership.

Hey, so, I have noticed on Hacker's Keyboard whenever I finish something with a _ , everything behind it goes to all caps, which, while I am sure is helpful in some instances, is of no use to me. I have poked around but seem unable to change this. Anyone have any idea if it is possible to change?

The Google Play store doesn't work without the Google framework which is practically a real-time data logger for all you do with and around your phone. Also it's a battery and data hog.

F-droid is a lean and FOSS alternative for that.

it's my first band and have not had it very long time, I got it for my gf originally but it doesn't work easily with s health. She tried it a bit with Xiaomi fit app which looked good to me. I only used it with gadget bridge on my own phone though. It works great for setting the smart alarm and notifications. The part that is less developed is the sleep and step tracking that happens on the app side's data analysis. Everything on the band side seems to work as one would expect. I do have android 6.0 and was only able to pair it through the app and not with Android so not sure if the mifit app would even work on my phone, that is a bug with miband and 6.0 specifically. I did not manage to make the firmware update work with gadget bridge to downgrade to a recommended firmware (might be related to the Android Bluetooth situation)... I wanted to see if there was any difference, but the fw I have seems OK.

Want leafpic to be good, but checked out Gallery on f-droid, and I think I got my new basic image viewer.
