Is it too late to open up a small pc repair shop?
Will people still need their computers fixed or have they all acquired the ability to google the solution?
>>
>>57048879
Yes but try in the morning.
>>
>>57048879
Depends on where you intend to open it.
>>
>>57048879
You have to figure out how many normies in your area still have PC's and laptops to make it worthwhile other wise just start with some ads and work from home. Oh if you do start something please don't take over a week to fix something, customers won't come back.
>>
>>57048928
Probably one of those little street blocks with all the little shops on it along a busy road.

>>57048957
>please don't take over a week to fix something
Nah it's going to be same day if possible
>>
>>57048879
You'll end up being a iPhone repair shop unless you are selective in your clientele. I don't wake up unless it's a 5k USD network install.
>>
>>57048879
my mom has two academic degrees from two different fields and she is struggling to work with folders and directory structure in windows

I think you will be fine
>>
>>57048879
Computers with microsoft products will give you an endless supply of work. it's typically the linux crowd that fixes their own shit and the techs that work on windows machines use linus to fix those as well.
>>
>>57049068
degrees in what fields ?
>>
>>57048879
>Normal people ever attempting fix their PCs
>Let alone even google about it

95% of people will ever attempt to fix their pcs even if they google the issue. You are out of touch if you dont realize how dim people are when it comes to computers. These people would consider the average /g/entooman to be a genius.

I worked at a local one adjacent to a state university campus a few years ago, and we were constantly busy.
All we had to do was beat the university's computer store repair speeds and advertise the fuck out of that.

Apparently the only reason we were doing well is because we were right next to campus. The owner said something around 80% of repairs came from undergrads. He opened a second location closer to mid-town and did so poorly that he had to close within a year. As far as I can tell now, the original store is still doing great.

Like people said, it's about knowing who's coming in and how you're advertising to them. Also, just from what I saw, the "repairs" were outrageously simple. Rarely did I work with hardware, and I remember being pretty disappointed and bored most days.
>>
Now that we are talking about PC repairs

Why do everything starts working like crap after some time of usage, even smart TVs, if I don't leave old software there to rot?

Why do I need to format C from time to time?

windows rot is no longer relevant since win 8.1

Im in France in a medium sized city and there are at least 4 computer shops around here. I guess they have enough customers. I went to see one of them to try and buy some cable, he's specialized in apple computers and he had something like 3 imacs on his desk and a bunch of other shit.

I believe OP is talking about fixing hardware related problems. Cracked LCD screens, disk failures, keyboard replacements, etc.

Even if he were to open the doors for software issues, that would be a minority of client base. Most tech illiterate people don't run into software issues. He'd be left to virus removal which is as easy as a system restore.

You know it's either fixing phones or menial software work now, right? A specialized repair business with a storefront (what I assume he means by "shop") is extremely difficult to break into. Companies contract out, but not exactly to "repair shops".

yeah same. i have sort of a fetish for that shit and actually already had this pic saved. something about it. oil porn is hot too but irl shit makes me cum super quick

>Will people still need their computers fixed or have they all acquired the ability to google the solution?
Either they bring them to the large retailer where they bought them, or toss it and buy a new one.
So no, I don't think you can.
Maybe if you repair old computers for collectors, Amigas and the like, but not modern ones.

yup every relative I have from 20 years old to 70 years old are completely clueless about desktop computers.

Had one PC making a weird noise and the relative was dumbfounded and ready to take it to Geek Squad. I looked and it needed a fan replaced. $6 part, 3 minutes of labor.

If you can put together legos you can put together a PC, but most people will never get over the fear of further breaking something they paid a lot of money for.

You'd probably do better in mobile smartphone/pc repair.

Not fucking worth it in this day and age or ever, people are cheap as fuck and wont want to pay the price for repairing their shitty junk heap.

Same goes for selling computers and custom builds, as they'd rather buy some cheap shitbox or build their own if they were that inclined.

Even just equipment and items isn't worth it as you can't compete. Like two years ago I figured I would check out local business for a change to buy a SSD on the day, absolutely no one had any in stock so I was better off just buying from Amazon... just like everything else.
>>
>>57049068

Should have used Linux
>>
>>57048957
>Oh if you do start something please don't take over a week to fix something, customers won't come back.

I would correct that to try to do an accurate diagnostic. As a IT monkey myself I severely dislike "fast diagnostics" because most of the time computer shop people dont know shit nad they always solve any minor issue by formatting.

A client came to me looking to recover some deleted data on her HDD. Ok what happened? "oh I deleted accidentally, too much data I guess"

Ran 1 program, didnt achieved much, disk was extremely slow. Ran a SMART data viewer, disk was on its last legs, bound to die at any moment.

Noticed a folder called RECOVERED DATA, I call the client and she told me "oh yeah, that where he put the data he recovered". Jesus fucking christ ma'm, there is not much to do since your dependable shop did a major scrweup by restoring the data on the same disk, and btw your HDD is dying, did the shop mentioned to you that?

"fuck you buddy, you are trying to get maney out of me". Last thing I knew, that bit... woman lost all of her data because the HDD crap on her.

It is jaw dropping how many of this shop people doesnt know shit.

>>57062238

>She probably thought
>she thought

And therein lies the problem.
She gave up her right to think the moment she paid someone else to do a job. Unless it's plain as day to see your being scammed, you don't really get to call someone out on something.

Whatever, in the long run, they're just hurting themselves. It's just annoying the entitlement some people have.

Just target older people. Seriously. Just the other day some old neighbor asked me if I could connect her new computer for her. It was bought at a local store in this far-away ghost town. It was a many years old 24" which she paid 3 times what she would have paid for an actually new one on the internet.

Completely clueless old people is where the money is. Don't mix your own or young people's habits and willingness to throw money out the window with theirs, it is a completely different market. Then again you have those old people who never saved a dime who expect you to do the world for them for free.

My local pc shop had a hard time selling desktops and repairs where down

so they started offering different type of repairs people want

mostly PS3/Xbox360 fixs
iphone screen replacements
Laptop screen replacements
PS4 HDD upgrades shit like that
>>
>>57049718
I used to work at a pc repair shop. 70% of the PCs that walked in just needed a virus removal. 20% needed a new HDD. The remaining % needed an actual hardware repair and in nearly every case, it would have been more cost-effective to just buy a new PC. Hardware repairs are almost never worth it to the consumer who can't do it themselves especially since parts would have to be ordered and since my company was the middle-man, it would be even more expensive. Our parts provider either gets parts refurbished or buys parts used and then sells them to us to sell to customers so it's not like they even get new or oem hardware. Oh, a new LCD and battery for your shitty 4 year old laptop is $600? Well a new laptop with better specs is only $400 and I can do a data transfer and warranty for $150 and you can leave today with it. Guess which option they usually went with.

If you want to get into hardware, you need to service shit that people drop (like tablets and phones) and get used to replacing LCDs.

>>57049590
Because with older windows operating systems, installing anything creates more bullshit that the system has to deal with. Over the years and 300 updates later, it just fragments the system and you end up with a system folder that takes more than 50 gigs. That's one of the nice things with the rolling releases for Windows 10. Of course, that brings other drawbacks but it's still something.

It's the same reason why any software diagnostic that takes longer than 30 minutes usually just results in a fresh install. Windows is not worth fucking around with these days because it usually just takes less time to back up all data, wipe, and restore. And usually nets better results too.

>>57056267
this.

Work out of home for longer repairs or repairs where you need to order parts and go to peoples homes for shorter repairs. It's a bit of a niche business though and would be difficult to get started.

I own a computer repair shop and.. Guess what.. these gents are right.. I do a very retarded number of iPhone repairs..

Ill give you this little info though, just in case it goes that way for you. KEEP THE OLD SCREENS. Most people replace when the outer glass cracks, but if the digitizer is responsive and LCD still works, people refurb them as long as they're OEM.

example.. I sold a broken iPhone 6s Plus assembly on ebay for 100$ just the other day, customer has no clue i profited from thier trash.
