I think the current page design is fine. Not that there were not some shitty updates in between but for now it looks good at least. Personally I can't help but look at the image on the OP and find it amateurish and antiquated in comparison.
As we get better displays and video quality improves I think it's a good think for the interface to focus more on the video itself and less on everything else. Note that this is mostly from a visual/graphic design standpoint and I don't deny some of the bullshit others have pointed out.

Same for the comment section. It works mostly fine and has less limitations now. And at least they got rid of the absolute cancer that was the 'top contents' thing. The downvote button is broken though and the mandatory Google+ connectivity is bullshit.

The only thing I like better in old YouTube compared to today is the absence of Google+. I don't use it and I don't want to be associated with it in any way (and not because of >muh botnet either). The merge felt way too forced and awkward. They've managed to make it less pronounced but I still prefer to keep YouTube as its own thing instead of another one of Google's services within the greater ecosystem.
