So I'm planning to in the future to try out dd-wrt on a router, would any router I find at a thrift store would do the job or it has to be at least new or not to old?

I'm aware that there's a list on their website, I wanna use it as a hone router so I wanna make sure if it would be fine because I also want it to be fast.

Use openwrt, it is way way better.

why do you think that? assplane plos

Do you already have a router?
If so, try it on that one.
Downgrading isn't exactly hard and its pretty much impossible to fuck up the installation.

You can pretty much pic up any router at a thrift store and it'll probably work.

The only reason it would be slow is if you're using wireless and the router you got only support 802.11b/g or something.

99% of home routers you'll find secondhand using 100mbps switches. So for wired connections it would never be slower or faster than any other router.

And as a final point, I use
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001FWYGJS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
with dd-wrt on it running a lot of services on it and it doesn't hiccup.

So if a 25 dollar router isn't "slow" I doubt anything you'd find secondhand would be slow either.

Like with any other network hardware the weakest link is going to be your ISP

Use tomato USB by shibby. Easy to set up and not a timesink, but supports almost everything ddwrt does and more
>>
using an off-the-shelf router is not good

dd-wrt is script kiddie tier hacked together garbage.

Not him, but what can you do with OpenWrt that you can't with DD-WRT? I'm using DD-WRT as a wireless AP right now and I'm mostly satisfied.

Well, dd-wrt isn't really developed and hasn't been for years. They are operating on an old code base thats chalked full of bugs, more and more shit breaks every time they port it and they never fix anything.

i have to agree with namefag here. it's better than the regular firmware, but still not great
