What is python good for and why should one use it?
Basic scripts that don't require much
Flexibility. A lot of services provide python APIs and it's easy to use for any quick scripts you might need. It's not the most powerful language by a long shot, but it's something of a swiss army knife.
Everything outside system programming, high performance or low memory requirements.

You should use it when you have a deadline comming up and you are not locked down to a language.
