Also, if you want to argue semantics, a window manager isn't a desktop environment without the presence of the desktop shell. The environment isn't just the software suite, but also the desktop shell. Without gnome-shell, for instance, the mutter WM is pretty much useless. Without Plasma, kwin is useless, etc.

It's actually quite a bit more usable than gnome3. You can actually have different instances of your browser running in different desktops. Try that with gnome3. It's pretty funny. Openbox even handles desktops better.
