No, but my country did.

>>
>>57034703
If you adhere to the strict security guidelines, and you build it in an area relatively free of severe weather, everything is fine. Besides, people should be worried about the 60+ year old nuclear power plants that are nearing their end of life.
>>
>>57034703
Never mind the factories were old. And wasn't it the tsunami that did them in? The quake triggered the shutdown procedure but not fast enough to power them down before the wave hit.
>>

I'm all for nuclear power, problem is WHERE and HOW a nuclear plant gets built.
We can't build nuclear power plants here because the whole country is in a seismic zone and it's likely they'll build it with low-quality materials.
>>
>>57034936
Maybe you should ask the Chinks to do it for you.
>>
>>57034936
But at the same time, if 10000 people in china die of radiation poisoning from a broken reactor leaking uranium into the exhaust steam, would China actually care?
Maybe they'll build it in Tibet so they can just cut off the whole independent nation if shit goes south. Also it'll be in the best location to spread fallout as far as possible
>>
Why don't we build nuclear plants underground? It's nothing more than a kettle so you can build the plant underground and have the steam generated piped to the surface. This way if there's ever a meltdown the earth will contain any fallout.
>>
>>57035032
I had an idea like this for quick earthquakes when I thought I could become an evil genius/terrorist with money.
>>
>>57035032
Think about what you just wrote for a second.
>>
>>57034919
And surely the chinese won't fuck up since they are known for their excelence in everything, and safety procedures right anon?
>>
>>57035091
Many of those plants are of American design.

And a nuclear disaster would put a significant dent in in their reputation.
>>
What are the chinks planning? They're going to be world pooper power by 2020 together with India.

Goodbye USA!
>>
>>57035054
It actually makes more sense than you think but the big con is cost.

https://www.quora.com/Is-there-any-reason-why-they-dont-build-nuclear-reactors-underground
>>
>>57035032
Mostly this would add massive expense in return for basically creating a kind of cannon barrel to fire radiation at the sky.

The way we've learned to build nuclear facilities in the past twenty-five years is more than safe enough, both in low failure rates, and in disaster containment, and there's evidence that newer designs will be even safer.

I started applying like a year before I graduated, sent out probably 200-500 applications. I got an offer to join Lockheed's compact fusion r&d team, but they rescinded it citing "restructuring." One of the PhDs probably wanted more money so they cut me or some shit idk. Had a few phone interviews from Livermore National Lab, Savannah River Site, Southwest Research Institute, Riverside Research, but never any real interest for straight up engineering roles (though I was applying more heavily into research oriented positions because that's what I wanted to do). Now I work as a physicist at a place that develops brachytherapy sources for treating prostate cancer. Pretty much all my graduating class is employed or in continuing education, but there were only 18 of us, so take that however you will.

We all did.

The tech for safe, self-regulating MSBRs/LFTRs was buried and abandoned because you cannot make nukes with the waste. Because there is no waste. They eat up radioactive waste from 'conventional' nuclear plants, too.

Jesus, did humanity collectively fuck this whole thing up. I hope it gets rectified in my lifetime...

No, but it wouldn't surprise me if one of the spergs I went to school with shilled like that. Purdue is a pretty good nuke school though.

Nuclear power isn't inherently unsafe. It's the shitty contractors vying for the lowest price and the job that are unsafe. Ultimately its the people involved that make it unsafe, either by way of cost cutting measures, pressure to open or maintain operation, or by lack of training.
>>
>>57036147
>Ultimately its the people involved that make it unsafe
But it's not unsafe. It's the safest form of energy bar none.
>>
>>57036133
Can't recall the exact specifics, but there was a containment system in place which actually worked for the first eight or so hours, and likely saved a whole of people, animals, and both ocean and land as a result.

Turns out that the worst of the radioactive stuff burns up so quick that by the time the containment failed, it no longer really mattered.

Compare with Chernobyl, for instance. No containment there, and even two sarcophagi later, still borked.

Given the fact that there's always something catastrophically going wrong with Chinese construction, let alone however they may handle nuclear materials, this next decade sure will be interesting.
>>
>>57035380
>Bachelor's
>Purdue

C'mon nigga.
>>
>>57036251
Chinese construction is fine if the person they are building the item for can have them jailed or executed easily, the problem lies with people who can't. Shady construction firms pocket most of the money and use garbage or substandard materials to finish the job for a massive profit.
>>
>>57036180
I don't think it was a containment system. It was the last-resort diesel back-up generates that kept the cooling system working. And the diesel generators were doing a good job ... but eventually they ran out of diesel fuel, and there was no way to transport more fuel to the site with all the damage to the roads and infrastructure. The generators failed, and the cooling failed, and then you had the china syndrome meltdown.
>>
>>57034404
China won't actually be building nuclear facilities for generating power. It will be for creating nuclear weapons in the lead-up to seizing -- by force -- the South China Sea.
