I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. You can sort of do that with a different DE. Press a key that opens the menu. Then press the first letter of the submenu you want to open. Etc.

I prefer the Unity version since it's separated from a search function so you don't get mixed results.
Plus with other DEs you have to go through every sub menu instad of just writing the item's name.
