My guess is the second because of your meme-y buzzword selection.
Batteries don't just explode without being prompted. A recall would have easily replaced any faulty pcb on the battery cells themselves. Issues continuing after recall resulting in discontinuation of an entire product means there is a much larger underlying engineering issue with something near or connected to the battery.

It just shows that in an effort to cram so much shit into the Note 7, Samsung has surpassed the chink's battery making skills.

The chinks simply can't make a battery of high enough quality to meet the requirements of the Note 7.

I used to wonder if it had anything to do with the 12Vs being pushed into it by QC 3.0 but then the Note 7s started exploding just sitting there.

Why don't they explode before users start using them is the other question.

The defective batteries was just a part of the problem. The phone is just too cramped and needed a smaller battery period to have been used and a little bit more relaxed design.
