It's a switch controlled electronically. Say you have a power outlet and a light. If you connect them, the light lights up. If you add a switch to the mix, it only lights up with the switch on. Replace that switch with a box with a AA battery slot. The switch only goes "on" when a battery is inside the box. This battery isn't enough to power the light bulb, just the switch to connect the bulb to the outlet. This could be useful as a battery tester, maybe, or be controlled by some other thing. That switch with a battery slot is a transistor. You can replace the light bulb with another transistor, and you can make complex chains of these to form any electronic device really.
