>which is superior?
>pic related
>>
Depends.
>>
That one is superior
>>
fact: hdd is always superior for every use case
>>
SSHD obviously.
>>
HDDs are already losing their last advantage to flash/ssds, enterprises can get the same gb/$ for nvme drives.
>>
>>57014133
Can you list some examples because I sure don't see it. At least not yet.

yes

ayayay caramba

don't be silly, this one is.
>>
Mainstream is already abandoning mechanical drives. In five years even enthusiasts will do that, and traditional HDDs will only be used by hoarders who only look at price per gigabyte. After that we'll start to see a decline in quality which will cause even the last Luddites to switch over.
>>
>>57014217
How is this bait you jackass
>>
>>57014784
Because people he argue about them all the time. They are encouraging.
>>
Ill stick with HHD over SSD simply over the fact that HHD may fail over time while SSD will fail over time
>>
>>57014346
Thats happened already. People holding out on hdds are either poor, don't need to upgrade yet, ignorant and buying prebuilt or tinfoil retards.

Something like this, also, SSDs are bound to fail eventually.

every single format has it's own advantige, it all goes down to what you need it for.
>>
>>57013584
HDD for storage, SSD for OS and programs
>>
>>57016172
That's like saying you won't use your car's brakes because you'll have to replace them at some point. Yes you eventually need to get a new set of brakes, but they're useful enough to make it worth it.
>>
>>57013584
HDD for long term storage and high write cases.
SSD for high read cases, OS storage/boot
>>
>>57014250
does applying chewing gum to your SSD do anything to improve the thermal profile?
>>
>>57017341
How much time though? In a human lifespan?
>>
>>57017483
Many many years, if you're constantly writing.
>>
It's like people suddenly forgot that HDDs fail all the time.

- For laptops and other droppable computers, i prefer SSD.

- For desktops, SSD for the OS and HDD for bulk storage. The price/capacity ratio still isn't the same as HDDs, not just yet.
>>
>>57014250
Why doesn't anything look as nice inside as Apple stuff?
>>
>>57017699
Because Steve always believed that even the parts nobody sees should look good. He's even had logic boards redesigned just because they don't look good enough.
>>
>>57017471
lol, it's useless
>>
>>57013584
Hdd fo' storage n' shiet, ssd fo' windowz n' shiet, nigga!

SSD is best for programs and operating systems as they're merely distributed content that you can reinstall and reconfigure if you need to. If you are concerned about reliability, simply store your personal files on an HDD.
>>
Is the life expentancy of SSDs an issue for your average user, with average read/writes?
>>
>>57017699
Apple hires only the best child slaves to manufacture their devices
>>
>>57021280
Upvoted for setting the record straight
>>
>life expentancy of SSD

what are you people even on about?
HDD has shit reliablility as is and are far more prone to errors
SSD, especially modern SSD has great durability, especially for civilian needs.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2856052/grueling-endurance-test-blows-away-ssd-durability-fears.html
>>
>>57013584
ssd is more overall more reliable and quieter, obviously hdds are better if you're storing a lot of media
>>
>if you write 50GB of data per day every day to the drive, it will take you some 12 years to wear it out. durability is fine

who would keep a single computer in heavy usefor a decade and not replace anything it it unless you were a retro collector?
>>
>>57014250
No 2tb ssd seen
>>
>>57017448
What is it with /g/ always making awful car analogies? Jesus christ.
>>
>>57013584
Superior in terms of what?
>>
HDDs are better in most cases. SSDs are good for chaching programs you use a lot like the OS and commonly used programs. I would never use SSDs for primary storage though.
>>
>>57021383
SMBs and poor people
>>
>>57021470
SSD are almost always better if you are choosing between one or the other
>>
>>57021470
ive never owned an SSD as primary master, and even i would say SSD over HDD.
>>
>>57016172

Wat.
>>
>>57014346
Storage demands are not dropping. Even if more people rely on streaming rather than local storage, that just means servers will be doing the mass storage instead of end users, and they will still be looking mostly at cost per GB as most of the data that people store does not benefit from increased performance. HDDs won't be obsolete until SSDs are cheaper, and that is still a long time away.

>>57021563
I'd rather wait an additional 15 seconds when booting every month or so than spend $8000 on storage
>>
>>57014346
>>57023341
Also, if you think that performance is going to thoroughly trump cost/GB, just remember that tape still isn't obsolete.
>>
>>57023319
>ssd is not a disc

I returned it yesterday to a shop. It was randomly stopping responding(so basically freezing system) for 10 minutes or so which made it unusable. Also when merging rar parts it goes around 80MB/s which is only 30mb/s more than unpacking the same parts from one Hdd to another. I was expecting more.
>>
>>57013584
Neither.

SSD is good when data needs to be access immediately and the hard drive is good for Massive amounts of data and "Longer" term storage.
>>
>>57013640

God no. We've had a rash of drive failures in our Optiplex 9020s at work, and they've all been the ones equipped with Seagate 500GB SSHDs.

Get an SSD or HDD but not the bastard child.

SSDs for system drives and all mobile applications

It's not mate, there are no discs in that thing, so it's not a disk.
