Why do you think so?

The current technology doesn't look very colorful to me either. Silver and black everywhere.

Pretty much this. I also suspect it's got something to do with people not liking plastic materials anymore, especially for computer cases.

Marketers wanted a drastic change from Computers 1.0 to 2.0

The only way they could show your mom and grandma computers were "cool" was to literally just change the color.

>beige is uncool and slow
>black is the future, now with high speed internet!

repeat ad infinitum

They used a sort of off-white color plastic, but they put flame retardant chemicals in the plastic that over time turned the plastic yellow.

It's actually harder to sell it.

Think I'm gonna put it in my old cute beige case if it will fit.

People love the 90's beige shit now.

What probably won't ever come back is the early 00's beige+colors and whacky curves designs.

Aopen made some nice cases for a oem shit-kicker.

I would love to get a super old case and put in modern parts, a sleeper basically.

I have a old as fuck tower.
Problem is, it's tall as fuck and had a proprietary power supply with different screw holes. I had to make a custom mounting plate just to make it work.
Just make sure everything fits.
Also, old cases also had shit airflow so keep that in mind.
>>
>>57010966
Natural selection seems to see-saw between extremes due to innovations that remove disadvantages. A material that doesn't yellow or that's less shiny could make beige fashionable again.

What I find interesting is that it took over 30 years for PCs to loose the beige/white standard.

I think its Apples quirky crap and edgy gayming pcs that finally killed beige.

Beige everything went out of style. All weird 90's colors (or non-colors) did, for tech and everything else.

My parents have never remodeled their kitchen built in 1989. The grayish-beige countertop color was popular then but looks like shit. The appliances were all white or beige but were slowly replaced one-by-one with black/silver and it looks much better.

Same with flooring. So much gross 90's off-white linoleum vanished overnight.
>>
When people started watching movies on their PCs the bright plastic on the monitor became distracting.

>>57011105

That's only some plastic, my keyboard is from 1999 and it's still not yellowed.
>>
>>57010966

new black don't show dirt as much and newer tech is made from cheaper plastic anyways.

old plastic is too expensive today

This. When the iMac came out, the press went nuts about it, normal people who'd never heard of Apple wanted one, and the company's trajectory turned around overnight. PC OEMs started to imitate pretty soon afterwards, first with colored stick-on case facades and then by throwing out beige entirely.
>>
>>57010966
One reason might be that there is essentially no reason to replace your computer case if your use case doesnt change.
You suddenly say that the old case is old and unfashionable 90% of people will replace their case every time they make a major hardware upgrade.

starting in the late '90s vendors started to get more adventurous, the iMac probably the most prominent example

coupled with the '70s and '80s office aesthetics that warranted beige in the first place fading away, it was inevitable that we would transition over to the similarly neutral silver and black of today
>>
>>57012054
the '80s and '90s were really a horrible time aesthetically in general

I remember when it was so cool to have a silver/black case - they weren't easy to find! I also remember desperately trying to find a good black/silver CRT monitor to match the case but ended up getting a white one because they just didn't have em...

I think the main reason desktop PCs are black now is that they've transitioned from being serious-business workplace machines to home entertainment systems. People who spend most money on desktops are often gamers who want their machines to look "bad ass" and the boring ol' beige with the turbo button doesn't just doesn't fit that aesthetic.

Beige is mostly a 90s thing so we might see some sort of revival soon. In the 80s there was a much clearer distinction between business and home PC's. If you look at the design for home computers like the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Atari 800XL, Oric Atmos or the TI 99/4A, you'll see plenty of black and silver. Sometimes red, green and all sort of other colors.
>>
>>57011001
What I really love about these older systems is the style of the keycaps, is there anyone who can make them in this older shape?
>>
end phoneposting
>>
>>57017275
Yes, main reason that design existed in the first place is because most people had TVs and spending money on a monitor to be used only with a computer was seen as pretty ridiculous.
>>
>>57017407
this
>>
black is much sleeker and better looking, because you can't go wrong with it. it will blend into any environment

i will admit though, the black, grey, and blue styles of the early 2000s were absolute dogshit though. it didn't look "good" until around 07-08ish

Tell me that new Corsair case doesn't remind you of the Octane.
>>
>>57017684
Not big surprise, considering Japanese businesses are still living in the 90s with their using fax machines and mailing CDs to other offices... One can still buy audio cassettes from the store over there.

>>57017162
The future could hold some cyberdeck-looking PCs because of VR. In the meantime, you can put your Pi in a case from a1200net. There's also this guy that does it with C64 cases (retropc64).
